In my life, I have seen the gay community go from a shy group who met at a guy's
house to "get to know each other" to a well organized political and social machine.
We have gone from ground zero to one of the most organized political and socialized
groups in the nation. That by no means implies that we are perfect- yet.
I grew up in a small West Texas town with a population under 800. Needless to say,
when I iscovered that I was a lesbian, it was socially and emotionally traumatic.
When 1 came out in high school, it wasn't popular to be a lesbian - still isn't for that
matter. 1 was the center of attention for all fre old gossips in town. My first lover
left town while 1 was still in high school and got mamed.
1 moved to Lubbock for "higher" education and found my second and third lovers.
During the first years, there were no bars in Lubbock and we really id go to
Johnny's house to party. That was the beginning of the first Gay organization on the
Tech campus. 1 remember the first meeting on campus. There were four girls; nie,
the girl 1 lived with, and a couple from Colorado who had read about it in the
university paper and dropped in. The meeting was disrupted when a camerman from
the newspaper came in. We threw him out This was the 70's, and although we
weren't around during the "great gay purge" in the '50's, we had heard horror stories,
and we were all afraid of losing our jobs, being thrown out of our homes, etc.
As for partying, if you wanted excitement, you went to the bus station with the
guys. Then, we discovered the bars in Odessa and Amarillo. On Saturday night ,we
would get three or four people and go party.
Then Lubbock started to get bars, currently we have three. None of them are lesbmn.
Just Magic closed about a year ago,after l»ing open for five years. Yes,it was sa to
see it close, but based on Lubbock history I'm just glad we had one. We ve a
number of organizations - strong organizations - and the MCC church ere. ome
of the brightest and best leaders of the lesbian and gay commumty come rom

will be a sequel. Lessons in Murder
by Claire McNab kept me guessing
up until the end about "who done it".

Ms. Sumner says "read it", she is
right on target I haven't been
disappointed

judge has ordered Parkland Memorial
Hospital to eliminate the AIDS
patient waiting list for AZT and to
begin offering an experimental drug
treatment for those who need it
Judge John Marshall ruled on the suit
filed by the Dallas Gay Alliance, five
Parkland patients and seven deceased
patients. The seven patients died
while on the waiting list for AZT.
OKLAHOMA CITY - The first Gay
Pride Parade in Oklahoma is being
planned for Oklahoma City. Members
of the gay community have been

In my life, I have seen the gay community go from a shy group who met at a guy's
house to "get to know each other" to a well organized political and social machine.
We have gone from ground zero to one of the most organized political and socialized
groups in the nation. That by no means implies that we are perfect- yet.
I grew up in a small West Texas town with a population under 800. Needless to say,
when I iscovered that I was a lesbian, it was socially and emotionally traumatic.
When 1 came out in high school, it wasn't popular to be a lesbian - still isn't for that
matter. 1 was the center of attention for all fre old gossips in town. My first lover
left town while 1 was still in high school and got mamed.
1 moved to Lubbock for "higher" education and found my second and third lovers.
During the first years, there were no bars in Lubbock and we really id go to
Johnny's house to party. That was the beginning of the first Gay organization on the
Tech campus. 1 remember the first meeting on campus. There were four girls; nie,
the girl 1 lived with, and a couple from Colorado who had read about it in the
university paper and dropped in. The meeting was disrupted when a camerman from
the newspaper came in. We threw him out This was the 70's, and although we
weren't around during the "great gay purge" in the '50's, we had heard horror stories,
and we were all afraid of losing our jobs, being thrown out of our homes, etc.
As for partying, if you wanted excitement, you went to the bus station with the
guys. Then, we discovered the bars in Odessa and Amarillo. On Saturday night ,we
would get three or four people and go party.
Then Lubbock started to get bars, currently we have three. None of them are lesbmn.
Just Magic closed about a year ago,after l»ing open for five years. Yes,it was sa to
see it close, but based on Lubbock history I'm just glad we had one. We ve a
number of organizations - strong organizations - and the MCC church ere. ome
of the brightest and best leaders of the lesbian and gay commumty come rom

judge has ordered Parkland Memorial
Hospital to eliminate the AIDS
patient waiting list for AZT and to
begin offering an experimental drug
treatment for those who need it
Judge John Marshall ruled on the suit
filed by the Dallas Gay Alliance, five
Parkland patients and seven deceased
patients. The seven patients died
while on the waiting list for AZT.
OKLAHOMA CITY - The first Gay
Pride Parade in Oklahoma is being
planned for Oklahoma City. Members

In my life, I have seen the gay community go from a shy group who met at a guy's
house to "get to know each other" to a well organized political and social machine.
We have gone from ground zero to one of the most organized political and socialized
groups in the nation. That by no means implies that we are perfect- yet.
I grew up in a small West Texas town with a population under 800. Needless to say,
when I iscovered that I was a lesbian, it was socially and emotionally traumatic.
When 1 came out in high school, it wasn't popular to be a lesbian - still isn't for that
matter. 1 was the center of attention for all fre old gossips in town. My first lover
left town while 1 was still in high school and got mamed.
1 moved to Lubbock for "higher" education and found my second and third lovers.
During the first years, there were no bars in Lubbock and we really id go to
Johnny's house to party. That was the beginning of the first Gay organization on the
Tech campus. 1 remember the first meeting on campus. There were four girls; nie,
the girl 1 lived with, and a couple from Colorado who had read about it in the
university paper and dropped in. The meeting was disrupted when a camerman from
the newspaper came in. We threw him out This was the 70's, and although we
weren't around during the "great gay purge" in the '50's, we had heard horror stories,
and we were all afraid of losing our jobs, being thrown out of our homes, etc.
As for partying, if you wanted excitement, you went to the bus station with the
guys. Then, we discovered the bars in Odessa and Amarillo. On Saturday night ,we
would get three or four people and go party.
Then Lubbock started to get bars, currently we have three. None of them are lesbmn.
Just Magic closed about a year ago,after l»ing open for five years. Yes,it was sa to
see it close, but based on Lubbock history I'm just glad we had one. We ve a
number of organizations - strong organizations - and the MCC church ere. ome
of the brightest and best leaders of the lesbian and gay commumty come rom

judge has ordered Parkland Memorial
Hospital to eliminate the AIDS
patient waiting list for AZT and to
begin offering an experimental drug
treatment for those who need it
Judge John Marshall ruled on the suit
filed by the Dallas Gay Alliance, five
Parkland patients and seven deceased
patients. The seven patients died
while on the waiting list for AZT.
OKLAHOMA CITY - The first Gay
Pride Parade in Oklahoma is being
planned for Oklahoma City. Members

In my life, I have seen the gay community go from a shy group who met at a guy's
house to "get to know each other" to a well organized political and social machine.
We have gone from ground zero to one of the most organized political and socialized
groups in the nation. That by no means implies that we are perfect- yet.
I grew up in a small West Texas town with a population under 800. Needless to say,
when I iscovered that I was a lesbian, it was socially and emotionally traumatic.
When 1 came out in high school, it wasn't popular to be a lesbian - still isn't for that
matter. 1 was the center of attention for all fre old gossips in town. My first lover
left town while 1 was still in high school and got mamed.
1 moved to Lubbock for "higher" education and found my second and third lovers.
During the first years, there were no bars in Lubbock and we really id go to
Johnny's house to party. That was the beginning of the first Gay organization on the
Tech campus. 1 remember the first meeting on campus. There were four girls; nie,
the girl 1 lived with, and a couple from Colorado who had read about it in the
university paper and dropped in. The meeting was disrupted when a camerman from
the newspaper came in. We threw him out This was the 70's, and although we
weren't around during the "great gay purge" in the '50's, we had heard horror stories,
and we were all afraid of losing our jobs, being thrown out of our homes, etc.
As for partying, if you wanted excitement, you went to the bus station with the
guys. Then, we discovered the bars in Odessa and Amarillo. On Saturday night ,we
would get three or four people and go party.
Then Lubbock started to get bars, currently we have three. None of them are lesbmn.
Just Magic closed about a year ago,after l»ing open for five years. Yes,it was sa to
see it close, but based on Lubbock history I'm just glad we had one. We ve a
number of organizations - strong organizations - and the MCC church ere. ome
of the brightest and best leaders of the lesbian and gay commumty come rom

judge has ordered Parkland Memorial
Hospital to eliminate the AIDS
patient waiting list for AZT and to
begin offering an experimental drug
treatment for those who need it
Judge John Marshall ruled on the suit
filed by the Dallas Gay Alliance, five
Parkland patients and seven deceased
patients. The seven patients died
while on the waiting list for AZT.
OKLAHOMA CITY - The first Gay
Pride Parade in Oklahoma is being
planned for Oklahoma City. Members
