For the past 3 1/2 years,I have been in
a very troubled,but untilrecently,seem
ingly determined, lesbian relationship
with an incestsurvivor. Approximately
two years ago, in spite of all the prob
lems in our relationship, we decided to
have a child through artificial insemi
nation. Approximately one month ago
(one month before our daughter
rights to custody of Nancy. And even
this will wouldprobably not protect my
rights if it were challenged in court by
Carol's family.
Moreover,Iam powerless to stop Carol
from changingher willif she chooses to
doso.Infact,Ihaveno legalrights even
to visitation.If Carol, or possibly later,
her family, were to decide not to allow

to a lawyer to set up wills that would
give each other power of attorney, pro
tect our rights to each other's property,
and that would protect my rights as a
parent, so that if anything happened to
Carol,I would become Nancy's legal
guardian.
Except for this will, I have no legal

less, 1 had to agree that total honesty
form the start was best for Nancy.

homophobia that has crept into her,in
between us, and it ^^pears inevitably
will creep into Nancy, is something
neither of us expected to happen from
within our relationship, firom within
our own family.
When we first talked about having
Nancy,we tried to discuss every angle,
every obstacle,every possibility. What
Ifeared most(and to alarge extent what
I feel has happened,especially considCTing our histories ofemotional incest)
was that Carol would become so en
meshed with our child that she would
have no room left for me.1 expressed
thisfear to Carol,but usually we would
both become so defensive about it that
we never truly explored it(Thatshould
have been a signal to us both,1 guess.)
Butone thing we nevCT even discussed
—one thing we never feared would be
an issue — was the possibility that
motherhood would tap into hidden
homophobic fears that we didn't even

had any idea that homophobia would be
an issue, especially for Carol.
For the past fifteen years of her life,
Carol h^ been very strong about her
lesbian identity,and fw the past five to
ten years,she has been a lesbian activ
ist She has given"coming out"talks to
college classes and to feminist conven
affect Nancy,and it would be better for
Nancy if we were also silent, at least
until Nancy was old enough to ask and
understand the social implications. 1
was shocked and greatly frightened by
this change in Carol, yet my own
homophobia led me to agree with this
new plan.
(Carol'sfamily was always very nice to
me, and although all was known but
unspoken by the adults and substantial
efforts were made to conceal the truth
from the children, I'm not sure that
Carol's family wouldn't have tried to
be more "open" — fw Nancy's sake,
for Carol's sake,for our sake—ifwe'd
ever been brave enough to actually ask
them to do so.)
So far, Carol has allowed me to see
Nancyasa"friend",1guess.Shedoesn't
know yetwhatsheisgoing to tell Nancy
aboutme.She says atleast I'll be repre
sented as the person who helped Carol
find the courage and strength to have
Nancy.Thatis only a small consolation
to me right now.1 wanted to help raise
Nancy in an environment that truly nur
tures the female spirit, respects female
rights, and values female strengths.
The only place 1 have truly experienced

this is within the beauty, power, and

Yet Carol is right; if she can no longer
justify a lesbian lifestyle to herself,she

least eighteen months old. But I didn't
get the chance. After Nancy's birth
Carol began pushing me farther and
farther away and continued pushing me
away until now she views her"family"
as herselfand Nancy,with meexcluded.
Although I feared this from the start,
and although Ihad neverbefwedreamed
of becoming a parent, I couldn't help
but continue to love Nancy mwe and
more every single day.
Finally, please beware that even if you
have never thought about having kids

Elvis Freak. Admittedly, past expoi-

want to.
I am NOT an Elvis Freak.
But I do believe The King ain't dead.
It all started on my birthday, which
incidentally is August 7th for those of
you who like to complete your shop
ping early. Among my gifts were a pair

Another Look At LesbianParenthood From The
Perspective Of The Non-Biological Parent.

Our July 1991 Issue. The Author Wishes To Remain Anonymous.
For the past 3 1/2 years,I have been in
a very troubled,but untilrecently,seem
ingly determined, lesbian relationship
with an incestsurvivor. Approximately
two years ago, in spite of all the prob
lems in our relationship, we decided to
have a child through artificial insemi
nation. Approximately one month ago
(one month before our daughter

this will wouldprobably not protect my
rights if it were challenged in court by
Carol's family.
Moreover,Iam powerless to stop Carol
from changingher willif she chooses to

I feel has happened,especially considCTing our histories ofemotional incest)
was that Carol would become so en

have no room left for me.1 expressed
thisfear to Carol,but usually we would
both become so defensive about it that
we never truly explored it(Thatshould
have been a signal to us both,1 guess.)

—one thing we never feared would be
an issue — was the possibility that
motherhood would tap into hidden
homophobic fears that we didn't even

Elvis Freak. Admittedly, past expoi-

I am NOT an Elvis Freak.
But I do believe The King ain't dead.
It all started on my birthday, which
incidentally is August 7th for those of
you who like to complete your shop
ping early. Among my gifts were a pair
