I started composing this farewell message in my head
last December, ever since I accepted an offer to join the Women's
Studies Department at SUNY-Albany. Each time I sat myself in
front of my computer, determined to pour my heart out, inevitably
something would materialize to distract me from my writing. In
other words, I kept putting it off, until tonight, when I am only 3
weeks away from leaving Oklahoma for good.
I have lived in Norman, Oklahoma longer than any other
place since I left home for college. How do I plumb the depth of
my feelings for this place? How do I sum up 13 years of my life in
a land that was initially as alien to me as Mars but which has
become more familiar to me than any place that I have been?
How selective should my memory be?
I remember the time a student came out to me, the
beginning of my second semester at OU. She had come to my
office to chat about the semester break and as we walked toward
the elevators she turned and asked if I had read Ruby Fruit Jungle.
. From that moment on I knew that lesbian radars functioned in
Norman as well as in any place that I had been. Since then, I have
had the privilege of being the "coming out sounding-board" for
many students at OU, most of whom had never emolled in any of
my classes. I will cherish these moments always.
I would like to think that I have made life uncomfortable
for some people in Oklahoma by speaking out on issues relating
to racism, sexism, and homophobia. Whatever else I remember
about my years in Oklahoma, my association with Herland Voice
will be among my fondest and proudest. Margaret Cox gave me
the first opportunity to voice my opinion when she invited me to
write something about women in higher education. Later, when
Audre Lorde's death moved me to write a column in remembrance
of her, I began my two-year stint as a more-or-less regular
columnist for the Voice. Pat Reaves' tolerance of my tendency to
wait until the last possible moment to turn in my essays made it
possible for me to contribute to the newsletter. Thank you
Margaret and Pat for giving me the opportunity to try my hand at
writing opinion pieces. I have become a better writer because of
that.
To my friends in Oklahoma and elsewhere in the
Herland community, thank you also for sending me nice notes of
appreciation. I would like to hear from you in the years to come.

DOG SHOW! The Fall Retreat will include a Saturday afternoon Dog Show/Contest. Ribbons or certificates will be awarded in several
categories. The judges will include veterinarian Debbie Scott. The entry fee will be $2 per category. So bring your furry friends to the
Fall Retreat for the show. Remember that all dogs must be on a lease and kept out of the kitchen and dining room. For further

I started composing this farewell message in my head
last December, ever since I accepted an offer to join the Women's
Studies Department at SUNY-Albany. Each time I sat myself in
front of my computer, determined to pour my heart out, inevitably
something would materialize to distract me from my writing. In
other words, I kept putting it off, until tonight, when I am only 3
weeks away from leaving Oklahoma for good.
I have lived in Norman, Oklahoma longer than any other
place since I left home for college. How do I plumb the depth of
my feelings for this place? How do I sum up 13 years of my life in
a land that was initially as alien to me as Mars but which has
become more familiar to me than any place that I have been?
How selective should my memory be?
I remember the time a student came out to me, the
beginning of my second semester at OU. She had come to my
office to chat about the semester break and as we walked toward
the elevators she turned and asked if I had read Ruby Fruit Jungle.
. From that moment on I knew that lesbian radars functioned in
Norman as well as in any place that I had been. Since then, I have
had the privilege of being the "coming out sounding-board" for
many students at OU, most of whom had never emolled in any of
my classes. I will cherish these moments always.
I would like to think that I have made life uncomfortable
for some people in Oklahoma by speaking out on issues relating
to racism, sexism, and homophobia. Whatever else I remember
about my years in Oklahoma, my association with Herland Voice
will be among my fondest and proudest. Margaret Cox gave me
the first opportunity to voice my opinion when she invited me to
write something about women in higher education. Later, when
Audre Lorde's death moved me to write a column in remembrance
of her, I began my two-year stint as a more-or-less regular
columnist for the Voice. Pat Reaves' tolerance of my tendency to
wait until the last possible moment to turn in my essays made it
possible for me to contribute to the newsletter. Thank you
Margaret and Pat for giving me the opportunity to try my hand at
writing opinion pieces. I have become a better writer because of
that.
To my friends in Oklahoma and elsewhere in the
Herland community, thank you also for sending me nice notes of
appreciation. I would like to hear from you in the years to come.

I started composing this farewell message in my head
last December, ever since I accepted an offer to join the Women's
Studies Department at SUNY-Albany. Each time I sat myself in
front of my computer, determined to pour my heart out, inevitably
something would materialize to distract me from my writing. In
other words, I kept putting it off, until tonight, when I am only 3
weeks away from leaving Oklahoma for good.
I have lived in Norman, Oklahoma longer than any other
place since I left home for college. How do I plumb the depth of
my feelings for this place? How do I sum up 13 years of my life in
a land that was initially as alien to me as Mars but which has
become more familiar to me than any place that I have been?
How selective should my memory be?
I remember the time a student came out to me, the
beginning of my second semester at OU. She had come to my
office to chat about the semester break and as we walked toward
the elevators she turned and asked if I had read Ruby Fruit Jungle.
. From that moment on I knew that lesbian radars functioned in
Norman as well as in any place that I had been. Since then, I have
had the privilege of being the "coming out sounding-board" for
many students at OU, most of whom had never emolled in any of
my classes. I will cherish these moments always.
I would like to think that I have made life uncomfortable
for some people in Oklahoma by speaking out on issues relating
to racism, sexism, and homophobia. Whatever else I remember
about my years in Oklahoma, my association with Herland Voice
will be among my fondest and proudest. Margaret Cox gave me
the first opportunity to voice my opinion when she invited me to
write something about women in higher education. Later, when
Audre Lorde's death moved me to write a column in remembrance
of her, I began my two-year stint as a more-or-less regular
columnist for the Voice. Pat Reaves' tolerance of my tendency to
wait until the last possible moment to turn in my essays made it
possible for me to contribute to the newsletter. Thank you
Margaret and Pat for giving me the opportunity to try my hand at
writing opinion pieces. I have become a better writer because of
that.
To my friends in Oklahoma and elsewhere in the
Herland community, thank you also for sending me nice notes of
appreciation. I would like to hear from you in the years to come.
