Herland is an all volunteer organization and depends on
volunteers for everything from wateringthe grass to serving
on the Board. We currentlyneed women who are willing to
sta:ffthe center for one Saturday afternoon a month. During
your shift, you could be involved with such tasks as visiting
with indivduals who stop inatHerland, helping them make
purchases or check materials out ofthe hbrary, answering
questionsaboutHerlandandcommunityresources,straightening up the center and processing oflibrary materials.
Wealsoneedwomenwhowouldliketotakealeadership role in Herland by serving on the Board offiirectors.
Board members are expected to participate in a monthly
Board meeting, serve on at least one committee and actively
participate inHerland activities.
Other needs include women who are interested in
facilitating support groups ofvarious kinds or visiting with
womeninnursinghomes. Perhapsyouhaveanotherideaof
how you would like to participate inthe Herlandcommunity

WHEN NuNs Go BAD ...
The US government has thrown the book at an 88year-old nun and her 68-year-old kid sister, also a nun.
Last month, in Col um bus, Ga, Judge Mallon Faircloth
apparently decided to make the world safe from religious
women of conscience who peacefully trespass on federal
property- specifically, themilitarytrainingfacility at Fort
Benning formerly known as the School ofthe Americas:
He sentenced Franciscan nuns Dorothy Hennessey,
88, and her sister, Gwen, 68, to six months each in federal
prison- the maximum possible penalty. Since 1990, when
Maryknoll priest Roy Bourgeois and other protesters
sh1.,wed up atthe gates ofthe school (recently renamed the
Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation), it
has been targeted by thousands ofdemonstrators; including
some of our finest Oklahoma activists. Every October,
folks gather at the entrance to Fort Benning to decry the
school's deadly role in Latin American politics and to
demand its closure.
Some of the protesters "cross the line" and trespass
onto the grounds. Usually, they carry coffins and name
placards that represent the people who've died atthe hands
of SOA/WHISC graduates.
The Hennessey sisters were among several thousand
who crossed the line last October and got arrested. So
were two other nuns and a Quaker couple from Ohio, all
four in their 70 's. Altogether, 26 peaceful trespassers were
sentenced by the judge. Most gotthe maximum sentence.
Faircloth offered Dorothy Hennesey the option of
servinghersentenceunder"motherhousearrest"inDubuque.
According to the National Catholic Reporter, Sister Dorothy told the judge, "No thanks" because she wanted to be
treated the same as her 25 co-defendants.
Like their fellow convicts, the Hennessey sisters said
they weren't looking forward to jail, but they plaqnned to
make the best ofit. Said Dorothy: "Ifthere' s time left after
we get out we mightwantto go into prison ministry." D

WEB SITE HELPS OK HIV
Anew Web site is making it easier for Oklahoman living
with HIVIAIDS and for those who treatthem to access upto-datemedical information.
CHAIN, Oklahoma's first Comprehensive IDVIAIDS
Information Network, can be accessed at http://
chain.ouhsc.edu. and features a statewide directory of
IDVI AIDS resources, electronic collections, a list ofrelevant IDV/AIDS sites on the Web, a virtual reference desk,
and an interactive calendar ofHIVI AIDS related events in
Oklahoma and the nation.
The Web site's electronic reference desk gives users
easy, confidential access to an HSC reference librarian.
Users may request mediated searches andask for help with
questions. Search results and relevant documents are
packaged and sent to individuals by fax, U.S. mail, oremaii in order to minimize concerns about privacy.
The Web site especially benefits IDVIAIDS patients
living in rural parts of the state, where there is often a
shortage ofmedical personnel and support services, transportation difficulties and greater distance to specialized
services. Frequently, the rural resident with HIV is the only
person with IDV whom his or her health care provider has
ever managed.
Most ofthe state's 200 public libraries now offer free
access to the Internet. The information contained on the
Web site is not meantto replace the advice ofa health care
provider.

MEMBERS
Central Oklahoma Human Rights Alliance (COHRA) is
seeking members to support their human rights work in
Oklahoma. In 1995, the Oklahoma City Council terminated
funding for the city's Human Rights Commission, COHRA
was formed to receive complaints of human rights and
hate-related offenses, refer such complaints to mediation,
and offer public programs and sensitivity training to civic,
business, school, social, and faith groups. Please write

The Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task
Force is asking for your help. Under current U.S. immigration law, American gay and lesbians are unable to petition for
their foreign partners to immigrate. The U.S. is the only
English-speaking country that continues to deny same-sex
couples the right to petition. Help the LGIRTF make
Congress aware of this issue by signing their petition. Find

14th Annual Provincetown Harbor Swim for Life & Paddler

WHEN NuNs Go BAD ...
The US government has thrown the book at an 88year-old nun and her 68-year-old kid sister, also a nun.
Last month, in Col um bus, Ga, Judge Mallon Faircloth
apparently decided to make the world safe from religious
women of conscience who peacefully trespass on federal
property- specifically, themilitarytrainingfacility at Fort
Benning formerly known as the School ofthe Americas:
He sentenced Franciscan nuns Dorothy Hennessey,
88, and her sister, Gwen, 68, to six months each in federal
prison- the maximum possible penalty. Since 1990, when
Maryknoll priest Roy Bourgeois and other protesters
sh1.,wed up atthe gates ofthe school (recently renamed the
Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation), it
has been targeted by thousands ofdemonstrators; including
some of our finest Oklahoma activists. Every October,
folks gather at the entrance to Fort Benning to decry the
school's deadly role in Latin American politics and to
demand its closure.
Some of the protesters "cross the line" and trespass
onto the grounds. Usually, they carry coffins and name
placards that represent the people who've died atthe hands
of SOA/WHISC graduates.
The Hennessey sisters were among several thousand
who crossed the line last October and got arrested. So
were two other nuns and a Quaker couple from Ohio, all
four in their 70 's. Altogether, 26 peaceful trespassers were
sentenced by the judge. Most gotthe maximum sentence.
Faircloth offered Dorothy Hennesey the option of
servinghersentenceunder"motherhousearrest"inDubuque.
According to the National Catholic Reporter, Sister Dorothy told the judge, "No thanks" because she wanted to be
treated the same as her 25 co-defendants.
Like their fellow convicts, the Hennessey sisters said
they weren't looking forward to jail, but they plaqnned to
make the best ofit. Said Dorothy: "Ifthere' s time left after
we get out we mightwantto go into prison ministry." D

Anew Web site is making it easier for Oklahoman living
with HIVIAIDS and for those who treatthem to access upto-datemedical information.
CHAIN, Oklahoma's first Comprehensive IDVIAIDS
Information Network, can be accessed at http://
chain.ouhsc.edu. and features a statewide directory of
IDVI AIDS resources, electronic collections, a list ofrelevant IDV/AIDS sites on the Web, a virtual reference desk,
and an interactive calendar ofHIVI AIDS related events in
Oklahoma and the nation.
The Web site's electronic reference desk gives users
easy, confidential access to an HSC reference librarian.
Users may request mediated searches andask for help with
questions. Search results and relevant documents are
packaged and sent to individuals by fax, U.S. mail, oremaii in order to minimize concerns about privacy.
The Web site especially benefits IDVIAIDS patients
living in rural parts of the state, where there is often a
shortage ofmedical personnel and support services, transportation difficulties and greater distance to specialized
services. Frequently, the rural resident with HIV is the only
person with IDV whom his or her health care provider has
ever managed.
Most ofthe state's 200 public libraries now offer free
access to the Internet. The information contained on the
Web site is not meantto replace the advice ofa health care
provider.

WHEN NuNs Go BAD ...
The US government has thrown the book at an 88year-old nun and her 68-year-old kid sister, also a nun.
Last month, in Col um bus, Ga, Judge Mallon Faircloth
apparently decided to make the world safe from religious
women of conscience who peacefully trespass on federal
property- specifically, themilitarytrainingfacility at Fort
Benning formerly known as the School ofthe Americas:
He sentenced Franciscan nuns Dorothy Hennessey,
88, and her sister, Gwen, 68, to six months each in federal
prison- the maximum possible penalty. Since 1990, when
Maryknoll priest Roy Bourgeois and other protesters
sh1.,wed up atthe gates ofthe school (recently renamed the
Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation), it
has been targeted by thousands ofdemonstrators; including
some of our finest Oklahoma activists. Every October,
folks gather at the entrance to Fort Benning to decry the
school's deadly role in Latin American politics and to
demand its closure.
Some of the protesters "cross the line" and trespass
onto the grounds. Usually, they carry coffins and name
placards that represent the people who've died atthe hands
of SOA/WHISC graduates.
The Hennessey sisters were among several thousand
who crossed the line last October and got arrested. So
were two other nuns and a Quaker couple from Ohio, all
four in their 70 's. Altogether, 26 peaceful trespassers were
sentenced by the judge. Most gotthe maximum sentence.
Faircloth offered Dorothy Hennesey the option of
servinghersentenceunder"motherhousearrest"inDubuque.
According to the National Catholic Reporter, Sister Dorothy told the judge, "No thanks" because she wanted to be
treated the same as her 25 co-defendants.
Like their fellow convicts, the Hennessey sisters said
they weren't looking forward to jail, but they plaqnned to
make the best ofit. Said Dorothy: "Ifthere' s time left after
we get out we mightwantto go into prison ministry." D

Anew Web site is making it easier for Oklahoman living
with HIVIAIDS and for those who treatthem to access upto-datemedical information.
CHAIN, Oklahoma's first Comprehensive IDVIAIDS
Information Network, can be accessed at http://
chain.ouhsc.edu. and features a statewide directory of
IDVI AIDS resources, electronic collections, a list ofrelevant IDV/AIDS sites on the Web, a virtual reference desk,
and an interactive calendar ofHIVI AIDS related events in
Oklahoma and the nation.
The Web site's electronic reference desk gives users
easy, confidential access to an HSC reference librarian.
Users may request mediated searches andask for help with
questions. Search results and relevant documents are
packaged and sent to individuals by fax, U.S. mail, oremaii in order to minimize concerns about privacy.
The Web site especially benefits IDVIAIDS patients
living in rural parts of the state, where there is often a
shortage ofmedical personnel and support services, transportation difficulties and greater distance to specialized
services. Frequently, the rural resident with HIV is the only
person with IDV whom his or her health care provider has
ever managed.
Most ofthe state's 200 public libraries now offer free
access to the Internet. The information contained on the
Web site is not meantto replace the advice ofa health care
provider.

WHEN NuNs Go BAD ...
The US government has thrown the book at an 88year-old nun and her 68-year-old kid sister, also a nun.
Last month, in Col um bus, Ga, Judge Mallon Faircloth
apparently decided to make the world safe from religious
women of conscience who peacefully trespass on federal
property- specifically, themilitarytrainingfacility at Fort
Benning formerly known as the School ofthe Americas:
He sentenced Franciscan nuns Dorothy Hennessey,
88, and her sister, Gwen, 68, to six months each in federal
prison- the maximum possible penalty. Since 1990, when
Maryknoll priest Roy Bourgeois and other protesters
sh1.,wed up atthe gates ofthe school (recently renamed the
Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation), it
has been targeted by thousands ofdemonstrators; including
some of our finest Oklahoma activists. Every October,
folks gather at the entrance to Fort Benning to decry the
school's deadly role in Latin American politics and to
demand its closure.
Some of the protesters "cross the line" and trespass
onto the grounds. Usually, they carry coffins and name
placards that represent the people who've died atthe hands
of SOA/WHISC graduates.
The Hennessey sisters were among several thousand
who crossed the line last October and got arrested. So
were two other nuns and a Quaker couple from Ohio, all
four in their 70 's. Altogether, 26 peaceful trespassers were
sentenced by the judge. Most gotthe maximum sentence.
Faircloth offered Dorothy Hennesey the option of
servinghersentenceunder"motherhousearrest"inDubuque.
According to the National Catholic Reporter, Sister Dorothy told the judge, "No thanks" because she wanted to be
treated the same as her 25 co-defendants.
Like their fellow convicts, the Hennessey sisters said
they weren't looking forward to jail, but they plaqnned to
make the best ofit. Said Dorothy: "Ifthere' s time left after
we get out we mightwantto go into prison ministry." D

Anew Web site is making it easier for Oklahoman living
with HIVIAIDS and for those who treatthem to access upto-datemedical information.
CHAIN, Oklahoma's first Comprehensive IDVIAIDS
Information Network, can be accessed at http://
chain.ouhsc.edu. and features a statewide directory of
IDVI AIDS resources, electronic collections, a list ofrelevant IDV/AIDS sites on the Web, a virtual reference desk,
and an interactive calendar ofHIVI AIDS related events in
Oklahoma and the nation.
The Web site's electronic reference desk gives users
easy, confidential access to an HSC reference librarian.
Users may request mediated searches andask for help with
questions. Search results and relevant documents are
packaged and sent to individuals by fax, U.S. mail, oremaii in order to minimize concerns about privacy.
The Web site especially benefits IDVIAIDS patients
living in rural parts of the state, where there is often a
shortage ofmedical personnel and support services, transportation difficulties and greater distance to specialized
services. Frequently, the rural resident with HIV is the only
person with IDV whom his or her health care provider has
ever managed.
Most ofthe state's 200 public libraries now offer free
access to the Internet. The information contained on the
Web site is not meantto replace the advice ofa health care
provider.

Board members are expected to participate in a monthly
Board meeting, serve on at least one committee and actively

He sentenced Franciscan nuns Dorothy Hennessey,
88, and her sister, Gwen, 68, to six months each in federal
prison- the maximum possible penalty. Since 1990, when
Maryknoll priest Roy Bourgeois and other protesters
sh1.,wed up atthe gates ofthe school (recently renamed the
Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation), it
has been targeted by thousands ofdemonstrators; including
some of our finest Oklahoma activists. Every October,
folks gather at the entrance to Fort Benning to decry the
school's deadly role in Latin American politics and to
demand its closure.
Some of the protesters "cross the line" and trespass
onto the grounds. Usually, they carry coffins and name
placards that represent the people who've died atthe hands
of SOA/WHISC graduates.
The Hennessey sisters were among several thousand
who crossed the line last October and got arrested. So
were two other nuns and a Quaker couple from Ohio, all
four in their 70 's. Altogether, 26 peaceful trespassers were
sentenced by the judge. Most gotthe maximum sentence.
Faircloth offered Dorothy Hennesey the option of
servinghersentenceunder"motherhousearrest"inDubuque.
According to the National Catholic Reporter, Sister Dorothy told the judge, "No thanks" because she wanted to be
treated the same as her 25 co-defendants.
Like their fellow convicts, the Hennessey sisters said
they weren't looking forward to jail, but they plaqnned to
make the best ofit. Said Dorothy: "Ifthere' s time left after
we get out we mightwantto go into prison ministry." D

Anew Web site is making it easier for Oklahoman living
with HIVIAIDS and for those who treatthem to access upto-datemedical information.
CHAIN, Oklahoma's first Comprehensive IDVIAIDS
Information Network, can be accessed at http://
chain.ouhsc.edu. and features a statewide directory of
IDVI AIDS resources, electronic collections, a list ofrelevant IDV/AIDS sites on the Web, a virtual reference desk,
and an interactive calendar ofHIVI AIDS related events in
Oklahoma and the nation.
The Web site's electronic reference desk gives users
easy, confidential access to an HSC reference librarian.
Users may request mediated searches andask for help with
questions. Search results and relevant documents are
packaged and sent to individuals by fax, U.S. mail, oremaii in order to minimize concerns about privacy.
The Web site especially benefits IDVIAIDS patients
living in rural parts of the state, where there is often a
shortage ofmedical personnel and support services, transportation difficulties and greater distance to specialized
services. Frequently, the rural resident with HIV is the only
person with IDV whom his or her health care provider has
ever managed.
Most ofthe state's 200 public libraries now offer free
access to the Internet. The information contained on the
Web site is not meantto replace the advice ofa health care
provider.
