Various statistics tell us that there are more than ten
million alcoholics in the United States. While that
figure is staggering in and ofitself,these statistics do not
tell the whole story. The alcohoUc's friends, family and
co-workers all feel the effects of alcoholism.
Obviously,it is the family that suffers most—
especially the children. And,when these same
children grow to adulthood, they carry the
scars of growing up in an alcoholic envi
ronment.
Although most of us are aware if
there is an alcoholic in our imme
diate family, we may not be aware
of the effects alcoholism has on
us as adults. Alcohol
ism is a family disease.
Children of alcoholics
run a higher risk of de
veloping alcoholism
than children of non-
alcoholics. They also
tend to marry (or enter
long-term relation
ships) with alco
holies.

To understand the effects a parent's
alcoholism has on you as an adult, we
must first look at some of the qualities
found in the alcoholic. Although every
alcoholic will not exhibit all of these
behaviors,almost all willshow signs of

a unit, lies to itself that "everything is
alright". You may have lied to keep
at least a few. These behaviOTs are:

Children and families of alcoholics re
spond to these behaviors with:
• Denial
• Protectiveness, pity, concon about

•Embarrassment
• Shift in relationship (domination,
rebellion, etc.)
• Guilt
•Obsession or continual worry
• Fear
•Lying
•Confusion
• Anger
• Lethargy, hopelessness, self-pity,
despair,remorse.'
Most children of alcoholics never had
much of a chance to be children. Life
was just too serious to have much fun.
The chUd is forced into a positicm of
responsibility for the parent and conse
quently is forced to "grow up" at a
much younger age. As a result, the
adult child may have problems being
spontaneous and be very rigid.
They feel the need to control their en
vironment and may react violently to
any sudden changes.This lack ofspon
taneity is due to a lack oftrustin anyone
but themselves. Children of alcoholics
learn early that they can depend on no
one else and consequently will usually
not allow anyone else to make deci
sions for them as they grow older.Even

book didn't quite live up to her talent.
Murder at Red Rook Ranch definitely
makes up for the discrepancy. Poppy is
one of the most entertaining and engag
ing characters 1 have found in a lesbian
novel. Of course, what would you ex
pect from a woman who calls herself
"Wondercrone"?
1 would recommend this one to every
one. And, if you've never read lesbian
fiction, this is a great place to start.
