There are many in the lesbian
community that believe lesbian
battering could notexist—that women
are not capable of physically and
emotionally abusing other women.
But, it does exist and it is much more
widespread than most of us are aware.
In Austin in 1985, the Austin Coalition
Against
Abuse
in
Lesbian
Relationships(ACAALR)conducted a
survey of81 lesbians. They found that
65% of those surveyed said they had
experienced abuse in one or more adult
relationships. Of this 65%, 70%
reported physical abuse, 85%
emotional abuse and 32% reported
sexual abuse. 13% reported that they
were the abusive one in
the
relationship. In line with national
statistics on women in the general
population, one third said that they
were sexually abused as children and
over 50% report emotional abuse as
children.
Battered lesbians deny their abuse or
refuse to seek help out of fear that they
will not be believed or because they see
no way out of the relationship. They
may also be afraid to approach
mainstream battered women's shelters
for fear of a homophobic response and
because there is little or no community
support or services in this area. Many
lesbians do not believe that there is any
abuse occurring within their

community.
