Southeast Meets
Southwest at Dallas
Conference
DALLAS - The Southeastern Confer
ence For Lesbians and Gay Men will
hold their 14th annual event this year in
Dallas, Texas. The Conference, the
theme of which is Southeast Meets
Southwest will be held over the week
end of April 13-16, 1989 at the Shera
ton Hotel and Towers in downtown
Dallas at 400 N. Olive Street.
The Southeastern conference For Les
bians and Gay Men is a non profit
educational organization which pro
vides an annual conference filled with
over 65 workshop sessions, keynote
addresses and panel presentations by
regional and national gay and lesbian
Saturday evenings entertainment will
be provided by Kitty Barber and Romanovsky & Phillips, nationally ac
claimed lesbian and gay entertainers.
The Conference was begun in 1976 by
students and concerned faculty in the
Chapel Hill, North Carolina commu
nity. It's membership is comprised of
representatives of over 1700 gay and
lesbian organizations serving commu
nities across the United States.

Texas Gears Up for
March On Austin
leaders, social and cultural events.
AUSTIN -The Dallas Organizing
Over 500 gay men and lesbians are
expected to attend from the 15 South
Committee has issued an invitation to
Come Home to Texas for the March on
eastern states, with outreach to the
Southwestern states.
Workshop sessions will begin on Fri
day morning, April 14th following
addresses by Dallas area representa
tives with continuous workshop ses
sions from 10am until 5pm. Friday
evenings entertainment will include the
Turtle Creek Chorale and the Oak
Lawn Symphonic Band,followed by a
guided bus tour of Dallas nightlife.
Panel presentations will be given by
JeffLevi,Executive Director,National
Lesbian Gay Task Force; Vic Basile,
Executive Director, Human Rights
Campaign Fund; Sue Hyde, Director,
Privacy Project; and Sabrina SoJoumer, African-American Lesbian
and Gay Alliance, Atlanta Georgia.
Austin forLesbian/Gay Equal Rights to
be held April 30, 1989. The March on
Austin is predicted to be the largest
march in the history of Texas and all
former Texans(or Texans at heart) are
invited to participate in this historic
event.
Many activities are planned throughout
the weekend of April 29-May 1 includ
ing: a concert by Teresa Trull and Dianne Davidson;receptions for students
and people ofcolor; The NamesProject
Quilt will be displayed; Joann Loulan
will present her workshop"Reclaiming
Lesbian Sex With a Passion",a Tejano
(Spanish for Texan) Dance; a Citizens
Tribunal will be held on the plaza ofthe
Texas Supreme Court; a reception and
banquet with the keynote speech by

Judge Jack Hampton will be inducted
into the Human Rights Campaign

nity.
The highlight of the weekend will be
the noon march up Congress Avenue to
the state capitol where a rally will be
held on the capitol steps. Scheduled
speakers include;Cleve Jones,Director
of the San Francisco Names Project;
Roberta Actenberg, Director of the
Lesbian Rights Project; Michael Meridan.Executive Director ofthe National
Association of People With AIDS;
David Scondras, an openly gay city

March for women's rights in U.S. his

On January 9. the Court announced it
would hear Webster v. Reproductive
Health Services, an appeal to uphold
the constitutionality of Missouri's
abortion law which also seeks to chal
lenge the constitutionality of Roe v.
Wade. Missouri's law has been de
clared unconstitutional by both a fed
eral district court and a federal circuit
court of appeals. On November 10,
1988, two days after President Bush's
election, the U.S. Department of Jus
tice sent a message to the High Court
asking it to hear the Webster appeal and
to use the Missouri case as a vehicle for
reviewing the Roe decision in order to
overturn it

home or on the route you walk from the
parking lot to yoim home or work. Not
only can these weapons give you the
edge in an attack,they can also be used
by your attacker and you should be
aware of them.
If you choose to carry something with
you to protect yourself, be sure that is
legal to do so. Guns and knives have
restrictions that vary from state to state
and require training for you to be able to
use them properly. Be sure you know
the laws and know how to use such
weapons before you carry them. The
false sense of security an untrained
person gets from carrying such weap
ons can often get them in worse trouble.

correctly you could only slightly harm
your attacker making him more angry,
or you could hesitate too long before
using it, giving your attacker an open

Let it be known that as of this past
weekend, my Significant Other (S.O.)
and myself have been blissfully united
in semi-matrimony (or a reasonable
facsimile thereof) for the enviable
duration of two and one-half years.
Twoand one-half years.Thirty months.
That translates to fifteen dog years.For
most of my contemporaries, two and a
half years is a silver anniversary.
We met during Prime Time (happy
hour) at a local night spot. It took no
more than a mere half a roll ofquarters
pumped into the Trivia Whiz video
machine to convince me that the
impossible had happened: I had met
someone I could actually like, perhaps
(Dare I say it?)love in a nightclub. And
breaking up with my former S.O.,I was
invited to a dinner party. The hostess
told me to feel free to bring a date. I
brought a whole box of them.
Further, nuclear family fusion hasn't
been a snap for either of us. It's been
reported that children of divorced

parentses (all four of them, that is) are
divorced. Then The Beatles broke up.
Then Wham!split. We were lucky to be

This month I've got two of the best
lesbian novels I've read in quiet awhile
- both from Naiad Press. The first is
Clicking Siones by Nancy Tyler Glen.
This is the story of Erica, who acciden
tally finds a mystical place in the woods
when she is seven years old. There, an
old woman gives her a magical stone.
When this stone is clicked against any
other it causes both togiveoffabrilliant
light. But, not everyone can sec the
light. When Morgan moves in next
door, the two girls become friends,and
eventually Erica shows her the secret of
the stone.
Yetirs pass and Erica meets others who
can see the light and clicks stones with
them. As the knowledge of Erica's gift
spreads, a worldwide movement of
followers develops. The followers are
can neither see nor feel the light but
believe in its power. But why do .some
see the light while others cannot?
During this time, the love between
Erica and Morgan is tested through
separation and the love of other women
