The Furniture Dilemma

A funny thing happened to me on the
way to domestic tranquility. It was one
of those grey,rainy, silent afternoons the kind of afternoon during which one
can go quitecontentedly for hours with
out hearing the sound of a another
home that evening, it became crystal
clear thatone woman's'No big deal',is
very often another woman's 'Dear
God, What have you done to this
house?"- followed by - if you don't put
human voice. You know the kind - a
perfect, interruption-less afternoon
which creatively- motivated people,
particularly writers,cherish. Minimum
distraction yields maximum concentra
tion, you see. Kind of like being the

noon rearranging furniture.
No major rearranging occurred, mind
you. No big deal.Justslide thatloveseat

there, move the electronics from one

Well. All this aversion to change came
as quite a surprise. Up until this point,
based on a number of past, pleasant
experiences, I'd come to believe that

Ms. Klaich delves deeply into the lives
of lesbians past and present. Some
names you will recognize are: Sappho,
Colette, Natalie Clifford Barney, Radclyffe Hall, Gertrude Stein and many
others. It also contains in depth inter
views with contemporary lesbians and
excerpts from a questionaire distrib
uted in the early 1970's.
I have read many books that focus on
the collective lesbian experience. I

have also read many that look atlesbian
torical figures are little more than a list
delves into the emotion,treachery, and
passion behind it all, as well as, bring
ing reflections on past lives to a per
sonal level relevant to our own lives.
The one thing 1 would ask for that isn't

to the questionaire from women of the
80's. It would be most interesting to see
how our answers to these questions
have changed in 15 years.

Ms. Califia's prose is wonderful and
will belie every stereotype you ever had

tion of S/M fantasy, this is not a book
for the faint of heart. Califia takes you
beyond the realm of the majority of
message that - just as you are perse
cuted for your sexual preferences by the
straight world,so too is she persecuted
for her sexual preferences by the les
bian community. The book makes a
strong statement in favor of dropping
Lesbian erotica and into the sexual
hinterlands. A place where a mother,
sister, and daughter live out a Victorian
fantasy, where a lesbian has an encoun
ter with three gay male cops, a young
woman is dominated by eight "topwomen",and even "a dash of vanilla."
I truly enjoyed Macho Sluts, but - be
fore the anti-pom activists in the audi
all our prejudices of a sexual nature.
Now, if you got through this review
without getting angry, you might just
enjoy Macho Sluts. If you did get
angry,maybe you should try it anyway,
it's always a good idea to know what
you missing before you decide it isn't

that these are not portraits of women as
