In June of 19861 was in Dallas and North Central Texas talking to anyone who would
listen about this greatidea for a lesbian magazine.There were alot ofencouraging words
from the people 1 met and talked with,almostall of whom were strangers.1 had my mind
made up before the trip - that 1 was going to try the waters with a publication directed
to the women's community.
The encouragement stopped once 1 came home except for a handful of friends (all of
whom 1 can counton one hand).1 gotcomments like-"You can never makea publication
directed at women work . They don't have the income to keep one up and they won't
support it!" Others flat did not like the format because 1 had chosen to stay away from
politics and direct it toward entertainment. Several "Mends" told me that 1 was nuts.
Well,friend's advice can be great, but 1 have never believed you should hinge your hfe
on what people think or say. Otherwise, nothing would ever get done.
1 am proud to say that Dimensions is two years old this month! And without you - the
advertisers,the subscribers,the distributors,and the readers we would not be here trying
for our third year of publication.
At the risk of sounding like the Academy Awards, my thanks would not be complete
without adding to the list, my staff, made up of mostly volunteers, who also believe in
Dimensions and have conMbuted long horns and weekendsto meetdeadlines.We would
not be here without you. A special thanks to Tasha Sumner who gave me the courage to
build a business from a long supressed dream and the determination and foresight to
work with me.
This by no means implies we are perfect,or that thejob is easy ,or has been easy.1 would
tell anybody who is considering starting a business ofany kind that the horror stories are
true: there are long hours and 1 don't mean eight to ten hours a day. 1 mean sixteen to
eighteen.Don'tthink you are"going to fly"for the first year because odds are you aren't.
It is real easy to over estimate what you think you can do. And if you expect support,
especially from close friends-think again. To this very day,only one of my friends has
a subscription to Dimensions. They think it is fine, but I "dedicate too much time to it".
But for all the negative aspects there is the reward ofknowing you are doing something
you enjoy and making it work,in spite of set backs.
Our first year was by far the hardest both emotionally and financially. Emotionally we
eotpractically nofeedback and had very litUe advertising,it wasfrustrating,and attimes,
1 began to wonder if my friends weren't right -"1 was nuts." The second year was
somewhat easier and that can mosUy be attributed to the added support from our
subscribers, readers and advertisers. For all the plusses, it is still hard financially, but
together we are making it happen!

Dallas - Women from all over are in
Conference of Mayors released a Re
vited to attend the First Annual South
Central District UFMCC women's
quest for Proposals(RFP)for funding
of community based AIDS risk reduc
tion educadon programs targedng ra
cial and ethnic minorides. Approxi
mately 15 grants wiU be awarded for
projects up to 12 months in amounts
ranging from $20,000 to $42,000.
Between January 1981 and June 1988,
over 62,000 persons have been diag
nosed with AIDS; a dispropordonate
number of these persons are in black
and Hispanic communides. The pri
mary goal of this RFP is to provide
educador on AIDS and HIV infecdon
to racial and ethnic minorides through
funding community based,community
service organizadons with an emphasis
on those organizations with established
ties to racial and ethnic populations.
Funding for these grants was made
available to the Conference of Mayors
by the federal Centers for Disease
Control. Over $1 million in grants has
been given to fund over 50 projects in
the five previous rounds of funding.

Couples Needed for
National Survey
Seattle, WA - A nadonal survey of
lesbian and gay couples is being under
taken by Partners. The research will
help determine the nature and needs of
this often invisible segment of the gay
community. The last major survey of
gay and lesbian couples was conducted
almost ten years ago.
All lesbians and gay men in a reladonship are asked to pardcipate in the sur

Austin - In an important development
for the AIDS Legal Resource Project,
the Texas Equal Access to Justice
Foundation announced on June 8 its
award of $20,000 to the program.
The grant money will be used to pro
vide legal services to low-income
clients of the AIDS Legal Resource
Project, a comprehensive, statewide
legal assistance and education program
of the Texas Human Rights Founda
tion.
Created in 1984 by the Texas Supreme
Court, the Texas Equal Access to Jus
tice Foundation is a non-profit organi
zation which funds legal service pro
grams for the poor in civil matters. The
grant is part of the lOLTA (Interest On
Lawyers' Trust Accounts) program
which pools funds from the trust ac
counts of lawyers who choose to par
ticipate.
This year, the foundation is giving a

with a total budget of $75,000, will
consist primarily of a toll-free legal
information hotline and the Council of
Cooperating Attorneys, a statewide
network of attorneys recruited and
trained by THRF to take on AIDSrelated cases.
Hotline callers will receive assistance
from the legal director or trained volun
teers and, when necessary, will get re
ferrals to members of the Council. In
some instances, legal counsel will be
provided on a pro bono(free ofcharge)
basis. Additionally, a public education
program will educate Texans on the
protection of individual rights of
people directly affected by AIDS.
The Texas Human Rights Foundation
is a non-profit organization dedicated
to fighting discrimination againstlesbi
ans and gay men and against people
affected by AIDS through public inter
est litigation, education, and legal as
sistance.

My lover and I just came home from a
"dream vacation" that we had saved for
years to take. We had a wonderful time
and spent the last two weeks in Paris. I
am into art and spentseveral days in the
museums and galleries while my lover
did the sight seeing tours.
My lover met a beautiful French
woman during one of these afternoon
excursions and proceeded to talk me
into a three-way.It was wonderful. We
spent a week having blissful,erotic sex.
But I would never do this kind of thing

The problem is,now that we are home,
my lover seems distant and depressed.

If there is one thing you can rest assured

Dumps", you will notice that she did

vocal about money and how they spend
it. If your lover says she doesn't have a
problem with your financial situation
then I think you should quit worrying so
much. If she has the money and wants
you to come along on a trip you should
stop feeling guilty.
If you threw a fit every time she wanted
to go somewhere because you don't
have the money to go,that is a different
matter, but if she asks you to go, you
should stop the negative feelings.
If you were living with her and not
paying for anything or helping with the
house I cotild see where you mightfeel
not ask for advice.
Women are not possessions or property
as you imply. And just because you
drag someone home doesn't mean you
can make them love you or make them
stay. Or does that count in yotn book?
I think you could write an excellent
advice column, but you may be a few
years ahead of your time. Try writing a
column for the Neanderthal cavemen,
they sound more your style.

In the futuristic short story,"The Test",
by Katherine V. Forrest*, the author

us, but what if we were an "accepted

again. Kate enlists Angie to coach her.
This not only deepens their friendship
but also serves to take Angle's mind off
to take up running.(I wear my jogging
shoes to run to the refrigerator)
There are also some intriguing insigu
into the mind of a rapist, as well as the

I would recommend this book to any
one interested in sports but also to
the rapist that is terrorizing their town.
As the big race draws closer, neither
mystery and romance lovers. This is
one of those books where you get it all
woman realizes that they are on a colli

Next we have Osten's R^y by Zenobia
N. Vole(Naiad Press,Inc.,$8.95).Gail
Murray is a marine geologist working
at a small Canadian university. When
that I mean that the bad characters are
evil and the good ones are so good it
she is offered a job on an island off the
hurts. A few in-between characters or at
coast of South America, she eagerly
leastsome that you could wonder about
accepts. But, upon her arrival, she dis
covers that the job is not what it ap
peared to be. With funding from a
mysterious,oil hungry corporation and

character, Gail, lacked definition until

in SCUBA diving or for lovers of melo
hand over her valuable research.
In the meantime, Gail becomes in
volved with Marike Osten, owner of a
resort on the island. As intrigue leads to
violence, Gail goes to Marike for help
and they fight the evil together.
Ms. Vole is a captivating author. Her
drama.
