The Newsletter of Womyn for Womyn, the Lesbian Resource Centre
Vol. 4, No. 9
A FEW THOUGHTS
by Ann, LRC President
I have heard all my Hfe that "what doesn't kill you will make you stronger". The Lesbian Resource Centre has been
given an unexpected opportunity to grow stronger. As you probably know by now. three women who have been
vital to the centre's growth and stability have resigned. Christine Jarosz. Lisa Mashigian. and Deb Floyd have
decided to put their energies elsewhere. We acknowledge and appreciate all that they have done to contribute to the centre. As a member or friend of the Lesbian Resource Centre. you can be confident that the centre will continue
to grow as we attempt to serve the lesbian community of Dallas.
I gave a very blunt challenge at the board meeting in which we were informed of the resignations. With the deepest
regards for the centre and the dignity of lesbians. I suggested to all interested women that "now is the time to put
u.2 or shut up" . We are all resr>onsible for reclaiminiLan.d recreating the centre to be the place we want it to be _
I am excited to be able to let you know that women have rallied to the cause. Large numbers of women have taken
on responsibilities and contributed their time. energy, creativity, expertise. sense of humor. problem solving
abilities, and commitment to the centre. Change is never easy. I have been around the Dallas gay and lesbian
community for fifteen years. I have never seen this much positive lesbian energy focused on creating the kind of
community we deserve to have. I encourage you to visit the centre to see and feel the changes for yourself.
I recently came across an advertisement in a national lesbian and gay publication that teaturea tnese words:
"There is nothing sweeter than a promise kept. There is nothing more bitter than a promise broken". The current
leadership of the centre which includes Carolyn. Dawyn. Diane. Helen. Lori. Lurese. Janice. Jeanne. Josi, Mariza.
Mary, Pam. Rayva. Rosa. Susan. Tanea. Terri. Valery. Vicki. and I have made a promise to do our best for Womyn
forWomyn. I am excited about the future . Thank you for all the kind words and helping hands.that have been
offered since the initial bitter shock of the resignations.
I honor the women who continue to serve the lesbian community. A special thank you must be extended to the
Women's Southwest Federal Credit Union and those who have made and continue to provide major financial
contributions to the centre.
Wherever you are. whatever you do ... I encourage you to be good to yourself and all other women.
ANNUAL MEETING
The Annual Membership Meeting of the Lesbian Resource Centre will be held on Sunday, October 24,
1993 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. LRC members will elect new Board members, vote on proposed By-Laws
changes, give input on centre priorities·, and conduct other business that may arise. Non-members are
certainly encouraged to attend, as well. This is an excellent chance the meet the women providing
leadership to the business activities of the Centre.

THE DISCLAIMER
Dear Readers,
As many of you undoubtedly know by now, Christine resigned as Centre Director, effective September 7, 1993. Lisa Mashigian resigned, via
letter, from the Board, and from her position as Membership coordinator.
Deb F. also resigned from her various positions as database manager, •
liaison to the Credit Union, Coordinator of the By-Laws Committee, and
all the other roles she took on when asked to do so . The departure of
these women creates a void at the Centre, not only because of th_e
amount of work each of them did, but because we will miss their very
presence. Christine, Lisa, Deb: Thank you, from the Board, from the
members, from your friends, for everything you have meant to the
Lesbian Resource Centre . Your legacy will endure.
Life goes on. The remaining Board members are committed to ensuring that
Womyn for Womyn, the non-profit organization, continues, and that the
Lesbian Resource Centre remains a visible, viable space for all of us. As of
this writing, we (the Board) are working toward that goal. We are taking care
of the business of transition, and we will have filled the vacant Board
positions by the time you read this. We face a formidable challenge: finding
others to assume the tasks that these three women performed just in the
day-to-day operations of the Centre. Women who attended the Board
meeting Tuesday night indicated a willingness to help wherever needed, for
which we thank them wholeheartedly. We may be calling some of you who
were n't there, to help us, also. One way you can all help is by attending the
Ann ual Meeting on Oct. 24, when the membership will vote on By-Laws
changes and Board members, among other things. See the article elsewhere in th is newsletter for further details.
It is a time of challenge for all of us; a ti me of growth, sometimes painfully
so; a learning process for many who are not familiar with the mechanics of
maintaining a non-profit organization. Are we equal to the challenge? We
think we are. Are we looking forward to it? Let's face it, none of us in our
right minds would have chosen this to happen, but since it has, we will rise
to the occasion. If anyone wants to talk further about what has transpired,
or has questions, call the Centre and ask to speak to a Board member; one
of us will call you back. Read the Honeypot for news on how things are
progressing. To paraphrase/plagarize Samuel Clemens, reports of our
demise are greatly exaggerated: the Lesbian Resource Centre is ailing
slightly, but we are very much alive!

Dear Editor,
I feel the tone of the
article about Womyn
en Cam bia im plies
that this group is solely
responsible for the
changes that are taking place at the LRC,
and I would like to respond to that point. First, the
LRC Board had begun looking at
the By-Laws well before WEC contacted them about
the subject in Au gust. The article also says that WEC
initiated the diversity statement, which is news to me:
the statement was presented to the Boa rd as the work
of one person, not a group of people, and certainly not
the work of this particular group. The women who are
forming WEC certainly are involved in bringing about
change to the Centre, as are so many other women
who are not affiliated with the group. My feeling is that
we could substitute the name of any other group,
committee, activity, etc., for WEC and write the same
article. I am not in any way denigrating the involvement of Womyn en Cambia; I am simply pointing out
they are not the only women working for change at the
LRC. I want to make it clear that I am nQ1 speaking as
a Board member; I am expressing my own feelings
about the article.

* Go see "The Joy Luck Club" at the VA Theatre.
What a joy it is to see real women in the movies. It
also reminded me of the legacy we have received

friends, sisters, and mother. Current show times are
1 :00, 4:10, 7:30 and 10:00.
* Get a group of friend and go enjoy the the State
Fair of Texas. You may rediscover your playful side.

Have you visited the LRC Library lately? Here's what you are

newly-categorized, non-fiction section! Check it out! Special
thanks to Linda S. (stands for Sweetie) for working with me on
organizing that section. A Librarian is on duty every Sunday from

NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY
The Lesbian Resource Centre is proud to be a sponsor of
National Coming Out Day.
The sixth annual Coming Out Day (NCOD) will be celebrated
on October 11, 7:30 p.m., with a forum at the CathedraI ·of
Hope MCC.
Dr. Rob Eichberg, authorof Coming Out: An Act of Love, and
one of the organizers of the original Coming Out Day will be
the keynote speaker. "Only by collective action and affirmation
of who we are will people's attitudes change--including our
own ability to appreciate ourselves as unique and valuable
people," said Dr. Eichberg.
Several lesbians and gay men, some well-known locally as
well as nationally, will join Dr. Eichberg to share their experiences in this celebration of truth and living powerfully. A
member of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) also will recount his experiences of "coming out" as
a parent of a gay man.
Encore, the community outreach ensemble of the Turtle
Creek Chorale, and the Oak Lawn Band will provide entertainment. Admission is free, although a donation to offset
expenses will be requested.
The original National Coming Out Day was held in 1988, to
commemorate the anniversary of the first March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The Human Rights
Campaign Fund now sponsors NCOD as a non-profit educational project with celebrations in cities across the U.S.
NCOD events focus on supporting individuals in their own
coming out process and on putting a face on lesbian/gay
sexual orientation.
46% of Americans say they don't know anyone who is a
homosexual . .
The government's historically poor response to AIDS, discrimination in employment and the military, the rise of hate crimes
and the perpetuation of anti-gay state initiatives are but a few
graphic examples of how costly stereotypes and misinformation about the real lives of lesbians and gay men can be.
National Coming Out Day seeks to change this ignorance
one person at a time.
National Coming Out Day is 501 (c)3 educational project of
the Human Rights Campaign Fund. All contributions are taxdeductible to the full extent allowed by law.
For further information call Jim McBride, 350-8380, or
Susan Gore, 348-4673.

are always welcomed.
Tanea, Dawynn, and Mary are serving as the transition
team, identifying tasks to do, and either doing those things
themselves, or finding someone to do them. Such things
we are doing! Painting, cleaning the office, cleaning the
kitchen, re-loading the computer, finalizing proposed Bylaws changes, laying new flooring on the stage, talking,
talking, and more talking! If you haven't been to the
Centre lately, we invite you to come visit, see what's new,
and meet some incredible women. The future of the LRC
is full of promise; we are all excited about being part of that
future!

Dear Sisters,
"IDENTITY AND INTIMACY IN OUR·
LESBIAN RELATIONSHIPS"
I have enjoyed many Friday
night dinners and other programs at the Centre. I like
the sharing that goes on,
sometimes forming a group
after the event for coffee or
more socializing.
.
My concern is how we
present the Centre as our
home or space.
How do we make a first-time guest feel welcome? On the
most basic level, who is bringing the toilet paper, paper
towels and other needed supplies? Also, how do we clean
up after ourselves?
THESE ARE THE THEMES FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL
MEETINGS OF THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT DISCUSSION GROUP. IDENTITY AND INTIMACY ARE TOP.ICS LARGE ENOUGHTOACCOMMODATE OUR STORIES, OUR ISSUES, OUR PASSIONS AND OUR POLITICS. "IDENTITY AND INTIMACY IN OUR LESBIAN
RELA Tlrn~SHIPS" IS THE TITLE OF A BOOK BY
JUDITH CANNON, PH. D., WHICH SHE HAS RECENTLY SUBMITTED TO A PUBLISHER. JUDY HAS
GENEROUSLY OFFERED TO LET US USE HER INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN AN ONGOING EXPLORATION OF THESE CRITICAL LIFE ISSUES. THE
NEXT MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6TH
FROM 7:30 TO 900 PM. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU HERE!
We expect a lot of the person who locks up, that part of her
job is to clean up after us. We are all caring for ourselves, and
part of caring for ourselves needs to be caring for the Centre ,
also.
Next time you're at the LRC, take a look around: are we low
on cloth towels, are we running out of coffee, do we need
dish soap? Have you washed your dishes, crushed your
cans, put your library book back where it belongs? Great!
Now you are ready to head out the door -- have fun until we
see you again!

THE DALLAS
CHALLENGE IS ON !
Dallas swimmers are ready to chal- ~
lenge teams from throughout the region
and across the nation. On October 9, the Trinity River Aquatic
Club (TRAC) is hosting a one-day short course meet in
conjunction with the Team Dallas Sports and Cultural Festival. This meet will probably be the biggest of its kind in this
area prior to the Gay Games next summer in New York city.
The meet will be held in the Perkins Natatorium on the SMU
campus. This six-lane indoor pool is equipped with electric
timing equipment guaranteeing us the most accurate results.
•The Columbus Day weekend will be a great time to be in
Dallas. The annual State Fair ofTexas will be in full swing, and
the traditional football rivalry between the University of Texas
and Oklahoma University will be played in all its splendor.
Further, the Team Dallas Sports and Cultural Festival will
attract lesbian/gay teams nation-wide for bowling, billiards,
tennis, volleyball, running, softball and more. In conjunction
with the sports festival will be concerts and wild parties!
So make plans to be here over the Columbus Day Weekend
(October 8-11 ). For travel arrangements and lodging information, call Travel Source at (214) 520-8844 or 1-800-374-777~.
