A Few Words

Responsibility
Responsibility ... where does it
begin ... where does it end? Whats
responsible ... whats interfering? My
next door neighbor beats his wife.
(Interesting scenario . . the mean
bastard and the socially conscious
Radical Lesbian Feminist who
heads up a Battered Lesbian
Task Force.) I talk to this guy
all the time about many
things .. heliestome .. hesays
that he's not like D's first husband who beat her. D says he
hits her all the time. I have never seen this. Who do you
believe? (Right, who does Christine believe .. no question .)
But she never leaves the house except to go to work. She
says she is getting counseling and going to a support group
for battered women. She left him once. She went home to
her Mom. He terrorized her Mother until she moved back to
him. The man is a bully. He yells and screams at me and
calls my lover very bad names. He is driving the neighborhood crazy. He has really frightened the woman who has
decided to stay at home with her new baby (well 18
months) . It is very frightening to live next door to someone
who is so unstable. He does notwork ... he washes his truck
every other day... he drinks. I have to see him everytime I go
out to my garage for my truck, or to let the cat in, or to take
out the trash, or to breathe fresh air. Calling the police
would, of course, onlyinfuriatehim. Or, that is the fear. Part
of me is not afraid of this guy; I only feel great concern and
great compassion for him. (This is prob9bly okay if I did
live so close to him.) I've tried to talk to him to help h
through difficult times so that he had at least some w
to vent his frustrations. Its been two years; its not workir

. This past month. I wrote about the copier needing
•repair and the compressor also needing work. How
well you responded to this call for help. Actually,
Donna Bigelow had been working on a new copy
machine for the Centre ... one that could possibly
do big jobs like the Newsletter .. .for quite some time.
And in March, probably for my birthday (can you
believe I forgot to put that day in the March Calendar?) Donna found just the right one. It is at the
Centre and is operational. Donna made this Savin
Copier her donation to the Centre. She becomes
the second Sugar Mama of the LRC. It is interesting
that our other S Mama had also donated a copy
machine to the Centre several years ago. It is a
wonderful wonderful thing to be .. .a Sugar Mama.
(We promise Sugar Mamas anything they want.)
Printing Please had given the LRC a copier which we
thought we could use for parts to repair the Sharp
Copier we have. The Printing Please copier needed
the same repairs that the LRC copier needed. So
the Centre now has, on premises. three copy machines. If anyone would like to buy, for a very nominal charge. one or more of the nonworking copiers
please call Christine. It will cost about $350 to repair
each of them. The Sharp normally is a very good
machine. Any.Nay.. ... Donna you are truly a generous and loving and supportive womyn ... and a great
friend of the Ceotr.a .. one we all admire and appreciate. Thank you ... and let me say in print .... anything
you want.. anytime .. anyplace .. anything (of course.
with Board approval!!!!) Thank you. sugar Mama.

Secondly, LRC's major compressor problem appears to have
been taken care of by Alpha Thomas, (LRC member and activist
extraordinaire) and Umoja Hermanas (the fantastic Womyn of
Color Group that meets the second Saturday each montti at
7:00). Alpha located a family member who does this work for a
living. Isn't it great to know that when something needs to be
done. the right person always appears. The ~entre was without
heat for a verrry cold few weeks. It is not surprising that we were
all reminded how fortunate we are ... that we have what is a
necessity to us (and a luxury to others) .... a heated/air conditioned safe environment. We should all be aware and appreciate that we, as a group of womyn, are very fortunate to have
what others do not... .a very safe place. I was going to say that we
are lucky... but. honestly. luck had absolutely nothing to do with
it. We have made this happen ... with boundless energy,
neverending hope and compassion, soaring creativity, and
deep rooted commitment. 'M'len something needs to be done,
it need only be asked. That is the purpose and the goa1·and the
dream. Umoja Hermanas makes us realize. by its contribution,
that it takes each of us to make the whole. Thank you, Sisters.

Thirdly. Carolyn Rowley has descended on the Centre with
incredible energy and enthusiasm . She does so much now, how
was it possible for the Centre to have gotten along without her?
She works the LRC Resource/Referral Line every other
week ... meaning all calls are forwarded to her house when not
being answered at the Centre. (That is an intense responsibility.
Thank you. It is also a great relief for Christine ... now she can do
other work.) She took on the task of clearing out the garden .. it
looks great... the bushes and flowers Terese Palmer planted last
year can now be seen in all their spring exuberance. Carolyn
works on Sundays for the Library Committee. She has taken on
the responsibility of seeing that food is prepared every second
Friday for Friday Night Dinners. She, along with the Under 3as
Group have practically taken on the job of managing the
Facility. These activities have made it possible for the Director
and Board Members to get on with other projects. Thank you,

Membership/Newsletter
Update
I wrote some time ago (January 93) about how we (the Board)
were considering making the newsletter a 'by subscription
only' mailing and that this was dependant on how many new
members we signed up. Well the deadline is upon us. As of
4-8-93 we have approximately 687 househo/dsthat receive
mailings. Some of the households have more than one
person listed. One of the reasons we were thinking about
newsletter by subscription was because of the cost. We have
been able to bring down the cost by going to bulk mail and
by rearranging deadlines for all kinds of things related to the
newsletter. We are still onlyfunded through membership. We
have 14 founding mothers (dues paid in full up front), 24
founding mothers who pay by check draft, 17 founding
mothers who pay cash installments and 65 voting or active
members for a total of 120 members. This equals 17 .5% of
our malling 11st. While we continue to add new names to our
mailing list the number of memberships is growing at a slower
rate. HELP! This is an appeal for new members as well as to
those of you who's memberships have expired. I have sent
out at least one notice to every member who's membership
has expired. If your membership expires in one month you
have also been sent notice to that fact. If you have not
received some sort of information from me you are not
currently a member. PLEASE SIGN UP NOW. Now if this
begging and pleading on bent knee is not convincing you
and you require more - like a party- in June we will be having
our annual member appreciation party and this is a perfect
time to sign up. For questions call me at HM/WK 618-4282.

WHAT are we doing, anyway?
GWF• seeks same for immediate live-in codependant relationship. Joint checking, home
ownership, and business partnership a must. Potential for hopelessly entangled finances and
mutual resentment, leading to a bitter, abusive
breakup whereupon we can bust/rip/destroy all of
each other's significantly valued belongings. Immediate sexual involvement with each other's past
lovers is essential.
Possibilities include open pl.Jblic hostiility, bankruptcy, and assault with a deadly household utensil. If we're lucky, formal criminal charges and
lengthy litigation will ensue.
Drugs, alcohol, okay. Emotionally stable need not

rr'e~ Lesbian Conference
In 1988 a grassroots coalition of women in Dallas, through
a vision of enhancing lesbian visibility, created the 1st Texas
Lesbian Conference. Nciw, in 1993, the lesbians of Texas
are coming together to promote the vision of many kinds of
power for all women. We are greatly inspired by the late poet
Audre Lorde's essay, "Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as
Power" in which she states, "Recognizing the power of the
erotic within our lives can give us the energy to pursue
genuine change within our world, rather than merely settling
for a shift of characters in the same weary drama." Join us
and hundreds of other lesbians at the 6th annual TLC May
21-23 at the Stouffer Presidente Hotel, Houston, to celebrate our empowerment.

A few weeks ago, Nancy Umphres from the Dallas Associo

to ask the Lesbian Resource Centre to be a sponsor of the

BATTERED LESBIAN PROJECT
Every 2nd and 4th Monday at the LRC,
the Battered Lesbian Task Force
'J
meets. Part of LRC's Crisis Intervention Program, this group meets to
specifically determine how best to
meet the needs and address the problems of the victims, both battering and
battered, of Domestic Violence. Our efforts have
been three fold : to educate and train thE, Domestic
Violence Support Community, those providing counseling or shelter to battered women, regarding thG
specific needs of Lesbians; to educate womyn in our
own community about ending violence in relationships; and, to help womyn in crisis. We have devel-:
oped a presentation for those groups providing support for battered womyn. We have made presentations to several shelters and groups, including Genesis, the New Beginning Center, and the FamilyPlace.
We now have available a crisis line. Pam Tise, newest
member of the Task Force, got us a voice mail box.
Once the program really gets underway, a beeper will
be added so that womyn in crisis can get immediate
help. Pam is the coordinator and director of the Crisis
Line. Pam and her partner, Diana, are making a
financial commitment to the project-they have committed to paying the monthly fee for the pager. (For
anyone else who would like to support this project
financially by helping with the Crisis Telephone, the
Line needs an additional $ 75 to get started .) The LRC

has asked the National Leather Association to sponsor ttje

A Few Words
by Christine Jarosz
· Director/Coordinator
Responsibility
Responsibility ... where does it
begin ... where does it end? Whats
responsible ... whats interfering? My
next door neighbor beats his wife.
(Interesting scenario . . the mean
bastard and the socially conscious
Radical Lesbian Feminist who
heads up a Battered Lesbian
Task Force.) I talk to this guy
all the time about many
things .. heliestome .. hesays
that he's not like D's first husband who beat her. D says he
hits her all the time. I have never seen this. Who do you
believe? (Right, who does Christine believe .. no question .)
But she never leaves the house except to go to work. She
says she is getting counseling and going to a support group
for battered women. She left him once. She went home to
her Mom. He terrorized her Mother until she moved back to
him. The man is a bully. He yells and screams at me and
calls my lover very bad names. He is driving the neighborhood crazy. He has really frightened the woman who has
decided to stay at home with her new baby (well 18
months) . It is very frightening to live next door to someone
who is so unstable. He does notwork ... he washes his truck
every other day... he drinks. I have to see him everytime I go
out to my garage for my truck, or to let the cat in, or to take
out the trash, or to breathe fresh air. Calling the police
would, of course, onlyinfuriatehim. Or, that is the fear. Part
of me is not afraid of this guy; I only feel great concern and
great compassion for him. (This is prob9bly okay if I did
live so close to him.) I've tried to talk to him to help h

Finally, the other day I had a very heated argument v.

his life. I mean, I know I can't take that on ... worrying ab<
what this guy will worry about for the rest of his life. D is

Thank you,
~~yn.

Possibilities include open pl.Jblic hostiility, bankruptcy, and assault with a deadly household utensil. If we're lucky, formal criminal charges and

rr'e~ Lesbian Conference

Don't you just love the graphic in the newsletter?
Mary Jo, you are just loo creative. Well I can't
give you an exact amount because this is being
written before I have access to the financial
report but I think there is close to $150 in the
account. This is just from new memberships.
understand Christine has dropped some
extra lesbian cash in there from other
sources. We'll give you more exact
details later.

A few weeks ago, Nancy Umphres from the Dallas Associo
tion of Family and Marriage Therapy called. She was callin~ •
to ask the Lesbian Resource Centre to be a sponsor of the
upcoming annual conference, "And Ju$tice For All". Th:
Conference scheduled for the week of May 21-23 w
feature Gloria Steinem. Sponsorship would entitle the LRC tl
a table for literature at the Conference. Sponsorship mear
purchasing 6 advanced tickets at $30 each. The Boar<
decided that this would be an excellent opportunity for tht
Centre for Outreach, for Public Relations, for Education. Li&
Mashigian came up with an excellent idea on how to rais
the money for sponsorship .. LRC would offer to the there
pists/counselors who do a lot of work with and for the Centr
the opportunity to go to the event as a partial guest of th
Centre. LRC would contribute 1/2 the cost of the ticket. Wnc
a good idea that turned out to be, Lisa. So, LRC was able ·.
offer discounted tickets to womyn who work with us .. a litt
something for each of us. This a great opportunity for tt,
LRC ... one of our long term goals has been to do a dir91
mailing to all the therapists/counselors/mental health pre
fessionals in the metroplex. We want these professionals ·,
know about the Centre so that the Centre can reach thm
closeted and isolated womyn who turn to therapists f1
support. We will be providing a support seNice to the:
professionals and we will be able to reach womyn v,.
cannot identify on our own. Nancy is the Membersh
Coordinator of DAMFT and has offered to help with 1t
project after their Conference ............And, another point..
did you get it? These people called us. They asked us ·,
come. Some members of the DAMFT are determined '
expand the definition of family. They called the Lesbic
Resource Centre for representation. We have come
long way, womyn.

moderate length should be submitted on diskette, in any PC
format, to the same place. Due to space limitations, articles of

~
!J
has asked the National Leather Association to sponsor ttje
Battered Lesbian Project by funding our Emergency Fund. Our
presentation to the Shelters was developed by Christine
Jarosz, Artemis, and Tanea. Layout and d esign of the presentation was by Kay Christian. Shelter training sessions are
conducted by Christine Jarosz with help from other Task Force
members when needed . The Task Force will have literature
and information available for the Conference of the Dallas
Association of Marriage and Family Therapy in May. We are
'1etworking with other Battered Lesbian Programs around the
nation . Tanea is our archivist and number one peer counselor.
Artemis is responsible for Fundraising and Outreach to the
Leather Community. Christine acts as Coordinator and Liaison witt}_ Womyn's Groups, the Lesbian/Gay Community, and
other community groups. If you have questions about this project, call Christine Jarosz
at 821 -3999. Money is needed to make
this program a success. Money you conCJ"""
tribute to this project or to the Centre is
tax deductible. Let your money work for
womyn . LRC is not just that fun loving
group of womyn having fun (although
there is nothing wrong with that and we,
none of us, get as much fun as we need);
it is also an organization that takes seriously its commitment to
womyn .
For information about this project and others of the Centre,

IF WE AU 'PnCH IN, WE CAN MAKE THIS FUN, RIGHT?
