- Quarterly Report and Neighborhood News : v.4:no.2(1998:Fall)
- Description
- The Fall 1998 issue of the Quarterly Report and Neighborhood News by the Women's Communities Association (WCA) highlights the organization's grassroots efforts to support women in North Central Texas. It reflects on the success of the first Avalon Solstice Festival, a women-focused medieval-themed fundraiser for WCA and the Walt Whitman Community School, featuring music, artisan vendors, and a solstice ritual. Updates include preparations for the third annual WCA Women's Festival and details on the Neighborhood Development Program, which fosters localized support networks for women. The issue also emphasizes the importance of voting and advocacy, featuring a Herstory Quiz and calls to action for community involvement. WCA continues to prioritize inclusivity, volunteerism, and addressing the unique needs of older women, women living alone, and lesbians.

Thoughts From The President
CONTENTS
If you look closely at the newsletter, you can see that some changes have been made. It has a new look!
This look is symbolic of the growth of WCA and reflects new beginnings. Though only my first year
as Board President, I am excited about working with this organization and about the changes. It's
exciting to see a grass roots women's organization grow. Dallas needs it! And W~A has got it!

WCA growth is reflected in other ways: one, WCA has done so

WCA has contributed to the Community in a big away and will only contribute more as we grow. The
larger the Membership, the larger the Financial Base; the more we can do for the women of North
Central Texas. If you factor in the $6000 seed money for all events, WCA only spends $30,000 annually to pay for its amazing programs; Neighborhood Development, the Communications LinkNewsletter, Telephone, E-mail, and the Web Page (under construction); the Resource/Referral Line;
the Crisis Intervention Program, and the Activities Program. These grass roots programs are supported by annual Membership Fees and WCA's three fundraisers. Remember our motto "if everyone
does a little, we can do a lot" and join with me in the upcoming year to bring better services to
women ... become a Member ... sponsor a Fundraiser. .. have some fun and attend a Fundraiser.
WCA's purpose is to create a better world for women. And with you, "Sisters, we are doing it!" Good
luck to us all.

Quarterly Report
The first annual Avalon. a Solstice Festival and Talent Review. benefining WCA and the Walt Whitman Community
School. took place on Midsummer's Eve. June 20. And in
spite of the unusually hot temperatures and Father's Day weekend, the event was by all accounts an
unequivocable and resounding success.
Solstice Report
Avalon was held on the beautiful. sprawling, 1.6-acre lawn of Oak Cliff Area WCA co-coordinator
Laney McGriff. There. the estimated 300 attendees were able to mill through colorful booths of
handmade jewelry, Native American crafts and gourmet coffees and desserts. One could have one's
Tarot cards or stones read by local psychics, relax with an upper body massage from professional
massage therapists or visit the M-Cares mobil health unit provided by Texas Woman's University
School of Nursing. Children. their faces brightly painted with original designs by local face painters.
ran through the grounds amidst volunteers dressed in vivid Medieval costumes. All of this took place
behind a stage backdrop with over a dozen music, dance and comedy performances presented by
local amateur and professional talent. including Blanche Fury and Deborah Viel. At the event's close,
and perhaps what turned out to be the festival's highlight. a traditional and ancient Solstice ritual,
aided by the haunting. pagen beat of drummers. was performed.
Avalon was created and sponsored by the Oak Cliff Area WCA. The group had heir first official
meeting in November of last year. and by March had voted o undertake the fundraising project. •• I
think it was important to us from the very first to make some kind of impact in our community," said
Kim Wallace, co-coordinator for the Oak Cliff group. WCA helped bring this group of women
together for support. encouragement. social contact. etc .. but after a few monthly meetings we
quickly realized we needed something not only fun by meaningful to focus our efforts. The idea for
Avalon evolved from an open-air talent show into a woman- focused Medieval festival. bringing in a
wonderful mix of amateur and professional talent. as well as women artisans and business owners.
Kind of a mini Lillith fair. All of the performers were great, and closing with the Solstice ritual was
amazing. The sight of a hundred women dancing arm-in-arm around a bonfire to the sound of those
drums is something few of us will ever forget!
We chose Walt Whitman as our co-beneficiary because one of our members had two daughters
attending the school which was really struggling financially. We also believed that the school already
enjoyed a certain amount of community awareness. and we felt that awareness would not only help
make our event successful, but also gain awareness and new membership for WCA as well.
Hopefully, it's also created an annual event where we can come together. show off our talents. sell our
crafts. promote our businesses and ultimately experience something spiritually together. The whole
project served many purposes and everyone involved has profited from it.

We were exhausted but so incredibly excited when the
event was over. We immediately began planning for
Avalon II. We've voted to adopt Aids Services of Dallas as
our 1999 co-beneficiary since the organization is in the
Oak Cliff community and one of our members is on the
ASD staff. ASD provides housing to families living \\ ith
AIDS. and over 30% of its residents are women nd children. Our group toured three of their four facilities in early
August and became even more excited about the opportunities to help. One of the needs
is for clothing so we"II be setting up a sort of closet
throughout the year to be available for any of the residents
when they need it.
"We owe our thanks to all the WCA
members who volunteered their time. money and support.
as well as the students and faculty of the Walt Whitman
Community School. If anyone would like to be involved
with Avalon II, or would like to help ASD throughout the
year. please call Shawn McDonough. our event coordinator. at 21-l-941-9745."

Dear Friends
We have all heard it on the news: voter turnout is at an all time low, voter
apathy is at an all time high, and people just don't seem to participate in their
communities anymore. While these are characteristics of our modem political
culture, they should serve as a warning to us all. Now, more than ever, women
need to participate at both the political and community level, maximizing their
potential as decicion-makers in this country.
The right to vote is the foundation of American political participation. It was
only 78 years ago that women were finally granted suffrage under U.S. law.
While women struggled for years to win this right, the fight is far from over. It
is only by strong voter turnout from women that we can exert the influence that
we won so long ago. I urge each of you to exercise your right to vote this
November.

This year we also include the Women's Herstory Quiz. The
winner, the one who answers most questions correctly, will be
awarded a very exciting prize. We are working on a trip to New
York for a visit to the Seneca Falls Women's History Museum.
If we can't get that this year, we will come up with something
almost as exciting. Also the winner of the Baking Contest will
either get a tour of Stephen Pyle's kitchen or a week's worth of
gourmet dinners. The WNBA is contributing posters and
maybe some tickets to games for winners of various events.
Anyway, still working on all that. Call us if you have interesting prizes to donate.
And because of our commitment to provide support and resources for women, WCA has arranged for the Texas Woman's
University Mobile Health Unit to be present that day. TWU
offers free inoculations and physical exams. Please spread the
word on this. Is a great opportunity. Tell everyone about this!
This good really make a difference for someone. Let everyone
know that these services will be available at the Women's
Festival on October 17.
The cost of admission to the Festival for WCA Members is $2 and $4 for others if tickets are purchased in advance.
Admission to the Festival is $5 at the gate. This is the cost of entry and allows you to watch activities, play scrabble,
horseshoes, and badminton, eat, and listen to music. Tournaments and participants in the Individual Skills Competitions
have special registration costs. There is a cost for every event with a prize or trophy.
Hopefully, it will be a day of sunshine ... even though it rained off and on all day last year, women cam early and stayed the
entire day. So, activities will go on despite the rain. It is a fun day. It will be a fun day ... so come one and come all and

When we first got together to start WCA, we had some pretty good ideas in mind. We knew
what we wanted to do and we knew who would do it and we knew why we would do it and
we knew we would do it right away. But the how to do it-while it did not keep us from
starting, it did make us wonder. When all these groups formed, what would they do? Did
we need to come up with ideas and projects for each group? The philosophical and patient
among us said that things would take care of themselves. Well, that seemed nice, but for
those of us who want to know everything right now, it did not totally relieve the anxiety
about the future. Even though we were at the very beginning, even before we were a legal
corporation, even before we had even had a meeting, and even before we had decided on
Area divisions, we were thinking how all these groups would be doing something
wonderful..but what would that something wonderful be? How to make it work?
You know, while there has been so much work done by so many women to make WCA
effective (we've made plans to do this ..changed plans to do that.decided on this ..no, that
won't work..okay, let's try this ..no that won't do .. let's try this again ...etc.); I have to tell you
those philosophers were right.
This is an organization of volunteers that help and
contribute as they can. It is an organization vast in scope and complex in design. Constantly
ebbing and flowing. Areas are active and energetic for long periods of time, then are
dormant awhile ...to come to life again later. It is like watching a living, growing thing. It is
constantly changing ... few steps ahead here, a few steps back there ...but always moving
forward. It is exciting to see the development.
Anyway back to the philosophers, they were right. Time has taken care of everything!!
Each Area has grappled with its reason for being. Because creating something from nothing
is not easy, sometimes you feel you are not accomplishing anything. But, I tell you, these
wonderful Coordinators and committed Members have kept up the effort in the face of
many obstacles and doubts and have created some great things. The Denton women meet
regularly and have adopted a Battered Women Shelter. The Garland Area puts on a
Coffeehouse, a place for quiet music and poetry. It's wonderful. Oak Cliff has created the
most wonderful spring-into-summer event imaginable. Avalon Solstice was beautiful. East
Dallas hosts the Annual Holiday Party, the Annual Membership Meeting at White Rock
Lake, and the Women's Equality Day Celebration. The Plan/Richardson/Allen group is
rocking and rolling with new Coordinators. Let's just watch them. They have been awe
inspiring in their support of women who have been in crisis.
Hilda Carrigan, a hero among us, down in Southeastern Dallas County maintains her post
down there even though very few people, if any, show up for meetings. It can feel desperate
and depressing for organizers; but if there were no meetings, if there were no Coordinators
willing to make the effort, there will never be anything for the women there to depend
upon. So for those of you just beginning or trying to maintain an Area, remember, it takes
time, patience, and lots of it. There is much to do on many levels. So what you do, whatever
you do is very important. (Don't worry! Be Happy!) No, really listen to the philosophers, as
we in WCA have had to do. It will take care of itself.
WCA is about making the effort ....no matter how confusing, complicated, difficult,
ridiculous, misunderstood, or useless it might seem. We as Members of WCA have
incredible faith, patience, and confidence in one another. WCA is for your lifetime. It will
continue to grow and change. I am proud to be part of this effort. I am also proud of each
woman I meet...the woman who offers her talents, gifts for others and the woman who has
the courage to ask for what she needs. I admire and respect the women who can and do
financially support WCA because money can make so much happen so much faster. As I
see it, we are all women of great courage ...we are wonderful.

Quarterly Report
The Facts
WCA in its four-year history has touched the lives of many women. In East Dallas, a new roof was put on a house for a
WCA Member by WCA Members. In Plano, WCA Members worked together to purchase an automobile for a woman
isolated, alone (except for her young children) without a job, and without resources. In the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Area,
WCA Members raised a$ 1000, purchased food and gasoline for a woman who lost her job, had no insurance, and could
not collect unemployment. In downtown Dallas, a woman whose automobile was totaled in an accident received needed
transportation· provided by several East Dallas WCA Members for a few weeks. Other women have been advanced
money, loaned money, been provided food, had medicine delivered, and have had various yard work done. What is really
exciting about this is that most of the women WCA has helped have returned the favor by becoming WCA Members
and/or by providing needed services to others. This is WCA in action .... if we each contribute a little, we can do a lot
formany.
We provide the means through which women, for the most part, can receive the help or support they need. We provide the
opportunity for women to use their skills, talents, energies, and money to directly help our own community. We provide
the opportunity for women to feel part of the solution.
For those who have been directly affected by WCA, the purpose of WCA is quite clear. For those involved in the daily
work of providing services (answering the Resource and Referral Line, leading groups in the Neighborhoods, identifying
and training new leaders, working on Special Events, responding to the needs expressed), WCA goals seem obvious. And
yet, while it is clear and obvious, it is almost impossible to express in words, or at least in a few words. To help out with
this situation, we are including some helpful information so that you can explain it to others. The following is excerpted
from the WCA Information Brochure:
The WCA
Vision is a better world for women.
The WCA Purpose is to create an interconnective, geographic network through which women (especially older women,
women living alone, and Lesbians) can find support, resources, and enrichment
The WCA
2000.
Mission is to create a network of two thousand Members (two thousand women helping women) by the year
The WCA Program
Women's Communities Association focuses on the needs of women who do not have traditional means of support.
Because late 20th century society is transient, very few people can count on historically traditional support systemsnuclear families, extended families, or neighborhoods of people who actually knew one another. It is in our best interests
to look together at our common needs, the ways to handle future problems, and do it now. WCA is currently crafting a
system that is not only addressing the immediate needs of women in North Central Texas by offering services and support
opportunities but one that will also act as a network of women helping women in the future. Current activities and
programs are designed to be the foundation and basis of support for future programs
The WCA Neighborhood Development Program, is not only enhancing the lives of women now but will also empower us
as we face the future together.
WCA is a grass roots organizations whose goal is to make a better world for women. By focusing on the specific needs of
women, who are usually overlooked; we, as a community, can create not only a safer place for women but also a safer
place for everyone. This cooperative effort unites the skills, the energies, and the resources of individual women as well
as community groups. WCA is a 50 I (c)(3) non-profit corporation which was formed in 1995. It is governed by a Board of
Directors. It specifically addresses the daily and long term needs of all women especially those who live alone, those who
are older, and /or who are Lesbians.

WCA
is proud to
support the
The Facts (con 't)
The Neighborhood Development
Program
While WCA provides social opportunities through its annual events, Mardi Gras in February,
Avalon Solstice in June, and the Women's Festival in October; publishes the Quarterly Report
and Neighborhood News, produces the Women's Herstory Quiz and other workshops; staffs a
Resource/Referral Line; and maintains a Crisis Intervention Program: the primary objective of
the WCA is to develop and support small Neighborhood Areas which help nurture the women
who live or work in those Areas.
Women's
Chorus of
Dallas
1. The first step is to create networking and socializing opportunities in small neighborhood
groups, the areas in which women live or work. While this first step will help end isolation,
provide the means to develop local resources, and provides leadership training, it is most
important as the foundation for the second stage of the Program.

the WEB

2. The second step focuses on the future as we plan the ways, identify the resources, and
coordinate the efforts to take care of ourselves as we grow older.
3. The third step is to become the eyes and ears of our community. While developing long range plans to care for ourselves,
we are also identifying women and providing support for those who might need the immediate help of a community of
women.

Quarterly Report
News:
Saturday, Aug 29, was another coffee house in Garland with local singer Rayn. This time Rayn
performed "unplugged". Attendance was approximately 25 people who all seemed to enjoy this
format for listening to the entertainer and having the opportunity to visit outside on the deck and around the food table.
Plans will be to have this format again later in the year. Stay in touch with the Garland WCA group if you are interested.
Garfand
Movie Nights:
More of our members have indicated they would like to meet more frequently for social activities. So, we have scheduled that the sec;ond Saturday of the month to be Movie Night. One of our members agrees to provide the house and the
movie for the group and then, each person that attends brings whatever they wish to eat and drink. This keeps the monetary burden for entertaining off of the host. We did this last month and had our first Movie Night. The video is
the choice of the host. There is no charge for attending Movie Night. We start gathering around 7PM and visit for
awhile before starting the video.
Monthly meetings:
4th Sunday of the month 3-6 PM. Usually a potluck after or during the meeting.

There are three days set aside to honor
women, aside from Mother's day. They
are Women's Equality Day August 26,
International Woman's Day on March 8, and Susan B Anthony's Birthday in February. Today we are celebrating a Woman's Right to Vote. Each year we remember women who have
sacrificed much for us by remembering them through a Women's Hetstory Quiz, published
on August 26. However, we are not presenting it to you at this time because we are doing
something really special this year. This year is the 150th Anniversary of the first Women's
Conference in Seneca Falls, NY in 1848. We are introducing The Women's Herstory Quiz
at the WCA Women's Festival on October 17. The person who answers the most questions
correctly will get a fabulous prize. We are working on a trip for two to the Women's Museum in Seneca Falls, NY. lfwe can't get that, we will come up with something really special. After all, where would be without those women who came before us. The following is

The Resource/Referral
Line
The WCA Resource/Referral Line (214
3 I 9-6696) is usually staffed during weekdays, some weekends, and sometimes into
the late evening. If it becomes necessary to leave a message (because I am on the other phone, at
meetings, working on reports, out to lunch, or otherwise indisposed), telephone calls are returned
within 24 hours. As I've mentioned before, the Resource/Referral Line is just one of WCA's Programs
which have been created to help end the isolation of women, provide resources, and help when
women are in crisis. Over 50 calls to the line are made each week. The needs include information on:
attorneys; sports activities; counselors-therapists; doctors; where are the women's bars; where do I
meet women; if I like women does that make me a Lesbian; if I find my wife in bed with the women
next door, does that make her a Lesbian: I'm the only Lesbian in Plano, where do I go to meet women;
I'm 14 years old, how do I meet women; you are the only telephone line that answers with a real live
person, I am a gy male and need someone to talk to; my lover just left me, I need to meet people; it's
midnight and I want someone to talk to. If you can think of a question, we answer it.
The Resource/Referral Line is just that. People call us for Resources and we refer them to the all-ready
established resources, if they exist. If people have a need that WCA might be able to handle, we make
many phone calls seeking a solution to the situation. Phone calls last in duration from 30 seconds to an
hour depending upon need. It is truly one of the most important functions of the organization. Your
support, through Membership, volunteer efforts, advertising in the Newsletter, attendance at Fundraisers, makes it possible for WCA to reach the women who need help or support.

WCA growth is reflected in other ways: one, WCA has done so
much for the community, i.e. the fine special events; the quality
WCAHAS
service of the Resource/Referral Line; and the careful coordinating
CONTRIBUTED
TO of resources with needs via the Crisis Intervention Program, that
WCA has developed a cedible and respected reputation in the

community. People expect a lot from WCA.
IN A BIGWA'I! Two, WCA Membership has risen to 467 and WCA has attracted the

attention and commitment of some very key support. Joanne Martin with the Newsletter. Sandy

And three, WCA has established a potentially powerful Fundraising Program: Mardi Gras, Avalon
Solstice, and the WCA Women's Festival. In addition, two annual special events for panned for
Members: the Annual Winter Celebration and the Annual March Membership Meeting and Fun Show
at White Rock Lake. At the Holiday Party (December 12), WCA enjoys a traditional feast and collects

WCA has contributed to the Community in a big away and will only contribute more as we grow. The
larger the Membership, the larger the Financial Base; the more we can do for the women of North
Central Texas. If you factor in the $6000 seed money for all events, WCA only spends $30,000 annually to pay for its amazing programs; Neighborhood Development, the Communications LinkNewsletter, Telephone, E-mail, and the Web Page (under construction); the Resource/Referral Line;
the Crisis Intervention Program, and the Activities Program.

Vist them on
the WEB
www.twcd.org
L
.J
2. The second step focuses on the future as we plan the ways, identify the resources, and
coordinate the efforts to take care of ourselves as we grow older.
3. The third step is to become the eyes and ears of our community. While developing long range plans to care for ourselves,
we are also identifying women and providing support for those who might need the immediate help of a community of
women.

We start gathering around 7PM and visit for
awhile before starting the video.

women, aside from Mother's day. They
are Women's Equality Day August 26,
International Woman's Day on March 8, and Susan B Anthony's Birthday in February.
The following is
an excerpt from previous quizes:

- Did you know the muffler was invented by a woman? Eldorado Jones.
- Did you know that besides occupying Lesbos, Amazons founded the ancient cities of
Ephesus and Smyrna?
- Did you know that ambrosia (called Supernatural Red Wine or the blood of life) given by
Hera, Mother of the Gods and Goddesses, to the ancient Greeks for immortality is actually
women's menstrual blood?
- Did you know that Shakespeare's sister probably wrote all those plays? (This is just a little humor and an unknown since I do not even know if Shakespeare had sister.)

The needs include information on:
attorneys; sports activities; counselors-therapists; doctors; where are the women's bars; where do I
meet women; if I like women does that make me a Lesbian; if I find my wife in bed with the women
next door, does that make her a Lesbian: I'm the only Lesbian in Plano, where do I go to meet women;
Your
support, through Membership, volunteer efforts, advertising in the Newsletter, attendance at Fundraisers, makes it possible for WCA to reach the women who need help or support.

to Mary Jo Madden for her great work on the Neighborhood News. She has done WCA well. Thank you all and may your journeys be

So as in all things. everything moves. Life is a river ... constantly flowing. And that is how WCA is ...constantly changing. Moving ahead
here; slowing down there. But always ... moving forward. We regret the leaving and revel in the new.
