SPRING RETREAT
Yes, it's that time of year again-time for the annual
Herland Spring Retreat! This year's spring retreat will be held
at Roman Nose State Park on May 16th, 17th, & 18th(Friday,
Saturday, & Sunday).
We have many fun and exciting activities planned for this
retreat (was there ever any doubt?). A couple of the activities
we have planned thus far are a scavenger hunt-winner gets a
trophy-and a silent auction (if you should happen to have any
art work you would like to submit for the auction, please
contact Herland-all proceeds go to Herland). We will also be
holding several workshops on such topics as music, poetry,
and paganism. And for the more athletically inclined, we will
be having softball and volleyball games(yeah!).
On Saturday evening we will be having a potluck dinner. The
highlight of t11e evening will be our Saturday night concert. Our
feature performers are the talented Wendy Allyn and Peggy
Johnson. As always we will have an open mic for tl1ose of us brave
enough to get up and make fools of ourselves©.
Ifnone ofthese exciting events has tickled your fancy, you
can always take advantage of the horseback riding, fishing,
and golfis available. As you can clearly see there is something
for everyone!
Registration includes the Saturday evening concert, a cabin
bunk, and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. The cost of the

PEGGY JOHNSON
Peggy Johnson will be one of the two featured artists for

May 17, 1997. Her unique blend oforiginal material and cover
songs have enlightened listeners in the Oklahoma City area
since 1982. From her original songs, "High School Senior" to
"Dust Bowl Lullaby," Peggy covers a broad spectrum of
genres from blues to folk. Peggy writes her very personal
songs from a perspective to which her audience often relates.
Some of her more appreciated covers include music by the
Indigo Girls, Nancy Griffith, Jackson Browne, Kate Wolf,
Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Melissa Etheridge.
Peggy is an attorney, and in legal terms, it could be said
that she is sui generis - which means "of its own kind." Come

Volume 15 Number 5
WENDY ALLYN
WendyAllyn will be one of the headliners at the Herland
retreat in May. Wendy is a very talented songwriter and singer
and is developing quite a name for herself. Her songs are very
heartfelt and emotional; simple on the surface but the feelings
underlying the words will leave you unable to forget them very
easily. Most of her songs are originals, although she has
covered songs by Catie Curtis, Gillian Welch and Joni Mitchell.
Wendy recently opened for Sara Hickn1an ai.•d J<mis Ian in
Oklahoma City, and headlined the Folk Fest at Medina's.
She's a must-see for anyone who likes intelligent, well-written
original music and with songs like Walk Away, Carry On, and

REVIEW
by Jill Gamer
If you're reading this before May 3, don't miss Erica
Wheeler at a special house concert. At the time I'm writing
this, I'm still trying to find out how to get tickets, but call 8435789 if you 're interested. If you've never seen Erica perform,
I recommend you do. She's a talented songwriter with a
beautiful voice and and her songs never fail to move me and
with music like her's, life's troubles can wait.
Ifyou missed Janis Ian at the City Arts Center in April, I'm
so sorry. I expected a good show but Ian greatly exceeded my
expectations. Ian is a legend and in addition to her incredible
voice and songs, she treated the audience to her very talented
guitar skills with several guitar solos that had the audience
hollering for more. Ian can rock and filled the room many times
with her strong smooth voice and electric guitar, and then just
as easily took us down with soft, beautiful, moving songs like
"Jesse" and "At Seventeen" that left me covered with
goosebumps. The sound was superb and her sound engineer
deserves a lot of credit. If you missed Ian, don't let it happen
a second time, if the chance comes again. That was a show I'll
remember for a long time!
Also, mark your calendars for June 15th to see Lucy
Kaplansky perform at the City Arts Center . I'll write more
about her next month, but Kaplansky is one of my new favorite
singers (and a former singing partner of Shawn Calvin's) and
we're lucky to have her come through Oklahoma City.
Everett and Vicky Moran, the force behind Moran Enterprises, have done a wonderful job this spring at making
Oklahoma City a spot on the map for some of the most talented
singer/songwriters performing today. This spring alone they
have brought such talents as Rory Block, Catie Curtis, Sara
Hickman, Livingston Taylor, Brooks Williams, Janis Ian and
Vance Gilbert. If you value variety in music at a great price,
please help support them by coming out to the shows . I
guarantee the music will be great and every seat is a good one.
See you there!
RADICAL LESBIAN FEMINISM REVIVAL
Interested lesbians are invited to attend the Midwest Radical
Lesbian Feminist Conference and Revival to be held June 6, 7, and
8, 1997 near Kansas City. Activities will include workshops,
small group discussions, conference-wide community meetings,

The lesbians attending the
confiference will create all events, but possible topics for discussion include the many forms ofbacklash against radical feminism,
radical lesbian feminism in the 21st century, creating lesbian
culture, ecofeminism, dykes on the land, radical feminists opposing racism, ableism, fat oppression...
Accomodations include heat and air conditioning, hot showers, multiple occupancy rooms, with a few private rooms available. There are a limited number of wheelchair accessible rooms
available. Sliding scale. For detailed information or to register

Their Review.

"Come to the concert," they said. "Janis Ian," they said.

A diminutive woman sidles to the stage, strumming her
guitar. Black hair, black T, black tights, black & white
high-topped, high-heeled Chuck Taylor's .... .(cool).
" .. .I'm ready for war ..... I'm ready for heat.. . "
The block letters of her t-shirt simply read godlike
" .. . Tonight we shall speak about beauty... tonight we shall

(My GOD It is Janis Ian. Here. In person. Singing for us.)
She says she'd been to Kansas the night before.
She describes herself as a folk singer who can sing sad

" ...I'm so happy... I love you ... "
(No one else in my row seems to know she's singing right to

After a particularly lengthy and exuberant round of applause,
someone says "You' re not in Kansas anymore, Toto." (Oops,

She smiles. "Yes ... thank you. But everyone in Kansas was

"Happy 25th!" Ms. Ian writes. (The woman knows
