Pride Center Door Smashed ... Twice
T h e
Septemb e r
General
Membership Meeting has
been scheduled for the regular second Tuesday, September 8, 1998, 7:30 PM at the
Pride Center. We are planning to have a program in
preparation for National Coming Out Day (October 111\
We want to focus on what
each of us can do to continue
coming out of the closet to
family, friends and colleagues. The program will be for those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender as well as those who
care about someone who is.
You may have read it in the paper or heard about it elsewhere, but the Pride Center was the point of two recent
Hate Crime attacks within a week. The first incident occurred the night of Friday, August 7, when someone decided to smash the front door of the Pride Center with a
bat or other blunt object. The culprit(s) took 5-6 swings
at the door and left the laminated glass completely shattered. Replacement of the glass in the door cost $295
on Saturday (with overtime). A second incident occurred
on the night of Thursday, August 13. The incident was
very similar, except someone took closer to 15 swings at
the door. The replacement cost was $220.
We will also be holding elections for the nominating
committee. The nominating committee will consist of 3
members elected by the membership and will be responsible for putting together a slate of nominees for
next year's officers. The nominees will be presented at
the October membership
meeting
(October 13) and
elections will be held
at the November

Luckily, the laminated glass kept those responsible from
gaining easy access to the center, though it's doubtful
that was ever the intention. Both incidents seemed to be
simple acts of vandalism by people with very simple
minds. The police were contacted both times and have
been asked to send the reports to the Hate Crimes unit.
The FBI has also been informed of the incidents.
Several possibilities for improving security at the Pride
Center are being considered. One of the best alternatives would be to place a security camera aimed at the
front door for monitoring purposes. This would also allow
for monitoring of anyone coming into the Center. Understandably, some people will be concerned about being
on tape, so measures will need to be taken to assure
that no one's identity is compromised. The problem at
this point is that it will cost a minimum of $1,000 to have
such a system installed. With the current financial status
of TOHR, that is not a realistic cost. If you know of anyone who might be willing to donate part of the equipment
or contribute to the cost, please call the Pride Center.

Renewal Time!
Just in case you've forgotten or misplaced your renewal
letter, here's another reminder that it's time to renew
your membership in TOHR. Even if you haven't been a
member in a year or more, now is the time to rejoin. We
are on our way to rebuilding the program and making the
Pride Center the central point for the GLBT community
in Tulsa. But we can't do it without you! So, renew now
and come join us at the Pride Center. And while you're
at it, why don't you consider making a monthly pledge to
the Pride Center? It doesn't have to be much - $5, $10,
$25, $50 a month; whatever you can afford will make
a difference in our being able to keep the Pride Center operational.

HELP Needed at Pride Center
I
OK, OK. You're tired of hearing about what we need
at the Pride Center. Well, the truth is that we are tired of
asking too, but the work still needs to be done. We will
stop asking for volunteers and help when we get these
things done! Of course, we always have a need for volunteers to work the helpline and the store. But, we also
need help on a few projects that have been waiting in
the wings for a while now. I know that we have all different kinds of skill sets out there, so now is the chance for
you to put your talents to work for your community! If you
don't see anything along your line listed, call the Pride
Center. We'll find something for you! Some of the needs
are:
V
We need a plumber (or someone with
plumbing skills) to snake out a drain
from Neal-Padgett Hall, as well as the
main drain out of the hall closet.
V We need an electrician (or someone with electrician skills) to check the wiring in the TOHR office
and in the main stairwell. Both have a short or some
other problem.
V We need someone to lay tile in both of the bathrooms.
V We need someone to install a handicapped
accessible stall door in the men's bathroom.
V We need someone to install a utility sink in
the men's bathroom or the utility closet.
V We need someone who is willing to organize the
library. We have had quite a few donations of
books and we are beginning to develop quite a library. Now we just need someone to organize it and
set up the policies for borrowing.
V We need someone who can help with managing
the Pride Store (ordering, monthly inventory, merchandising, etc.).
V We need volunteers to help plan the Holiday Dinner and/or Party for TOHR and the Pride Center.

We need someone who would be willing to manage

and making it available to the community.
We need other activities to be planned and coordinated at the Pride Center. We want to offer other
programs and activities that will bring in more of the
community. If you have an idea for a program and

up for the meeting, despite the fact that numerous people expressed an interest to be involved for next year.
What everyone needs to understand is that this is not an
event that you can jump in the day before and plan.
Plans began in February-March last year and that was
not nearly enough time. And, when you consider the
possibility of adding a parade this year, the planning and
coordination becomes even more difficult. We must
start planning now.
We have scheduled the next planning meeting for the

To better control the flow of mail
into TOHR and the Pride Center,
we are changing our mailing address to the PO Box previously used by TOHR for the H.
O.P.E. programs. The new mailing address is:
PO Box 2687
Tulsa, OK 74101
We will continue to receive some mail at the street address, but would prefer to have all membership and
other correspondence to ce directed to the post office
box. This provides more control over the mail we receive. The street address will still be used to publicize
the Pride Center and will remain on the letterhead and in
all correspondence as well.

Weekly Movie Night Started at Pride

Movie night has been changed from a monthly event to
a weekly one, with positive results. We've had great
turnouts so far for favorite gay films from The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert to Change of
Heart, and more great films are planned. Movie night is
EVERY THURSDAY at 7:30 PM at the Pride Center.
Currently, films are being shown in the Renfro Room,
but plans are to move to Neal-Padgett Hall as attendance increases. Future planned movies include:

available at the Pride Center
inside the Pride Store. We
still have lots of t-shirts available in both designs and the tank tops in the full-chest
design. Sizes may be limited in some designs or style of
shirt, so come by early for the best selection! Shirts are
$15.00 each ($17.00 for XXL & XXXL sizes) and profits
will go to fund future Pride events and other special

We need someone who would be willing to manage
the accumulation and updating of community
calendar information from the various businesses
and organizations in Tulsa. The Pride Center is a
prime location for compiling that sort of information
and making it available to the community.
We need other activities to be planned and coordinated at the Pride Center. We want to offer other
programs and activities that will bring in more of the
community. If you have an idea for a program and
are willing to plan it (or know someone who is), let
us know.
We would like to bring back. TOHR Follie~ this
year. We need people wtio can help coordinate and
organize this event.

Pride Center:
A Computer (capable of running at least Windows
95) and monitor.
Vending Machine (Sodas, Snacks).
A Copier.
Installation of cable TV or a satellite dish.
Bookcases.

next year. Unfortunately, we only had three people show
up for the meeting, despite the fact that numerous people expressed an interest to be involved for next year.
What everyone needs to understand is that this is not an
event that you can jump in the day before and plan.
Plans began in February-March last year and that was
not nearly enough time. And, when you consider the
possibility of adding a parade this year, the planning and
coordination becomes even more difficult. We must
start planning now.
We have scheduled the next planning meeting for the
1999 Pride celebration frn Tuesday, Septernber 22, 7:30
PM, at the Pride Center. Please plan to attend.
Mailing Address
Change
--.;EE::::=

Center
Movie night has been changed from a monthly event to
a weekly one, with positive results. We've had great
turnouts so far for favorite gay films from The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert to Change of
Heart, and more great films are planned. Movie night is
EVERY THURSDAY at 7:30 PM at the Pride Center.
Currently, films are being shown in the Renfro Room,
but plans are to move to Neal-Padgett Hall as attendance increases. Future planned movies include:

Pride Shirts from this year's
picnic will continue to be
available at the Pride Center
inside the Pride Store. We
still have lots of t-shirts available in both designs and the tank tops in the full-chest
design. Sizes may be limited in some designs or style of
shirt, so come by early for the best selection! Shirts are
$15.00 each ($17.00 for XXL & XXXL sizes) and profits
will go to fund future Pride events and other special
events.
