DJ FUNDRAISER HELPS HERLAND'S
BUILDING FUND
Many thanks go out to DJ from the
Herland collective for sponsoring a fundraiser at her club for Herland.
On October 28 and 29 Herland held a
series of cake walks and a "fishing pond"
at DJ's place. The events raised money
for Herland's Building Fund, which is in
need of bolstering for closing expenses
on the new building at 2312 NW 39th.
After closing on November 30, money will
be needed for materials to do major repairs and necessary remodeling 9 and
starting on Saturday, December 5 work
will be done on the new building every
weekend until all renovations are completedo So, get out your work clothes, and
find your hammer and paint brush and come
on down and join in this herstoric event!
DJ's generosity and devotion to the
OKC wimmin's community reflects the spirit
of our community and is an example of the
cohesion and sisterhood experienced by
those who involve themselves with supporting Oklahoma City's wimmin.

Sickened by recent brutal rapes a~

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED
ANTI-LESBIAN SEXUAL ASSAULT?
"Two years after the rape I realized it
was homophobic violence; he had, after all,
followed me home from a gay bar • . Suddenly,
I felt vulnerable, totally alone . It was as
if my whole world turned upside-downo"
"When my lover's parents came, I was in
shock. Her lesbianism was not mentioned ,
let alone the dyke - hating notes she had received the month before. Her rape and murder was not random, and the silence infuriated me.
11
Dear HSR :
The following information has been sent
to organizations like yours across the country in an effort to reach as many lesbians
as possible. Extensions on the posted dead1ine for submissions may be requested in
writing.
I am excited about the response I have
received, both from publishers and lesbians
generally. I am a lesbian feminist active
in the anti-rape movement for over six years.
I received my masters in feminist theology
·from Harvard Divinity School in 1981, and
began working as program director of the Women's Crisis Service in Manchester, New Hamp shire. Serving over 130 rape survivors and
1,000 battered wo~en annually, the Women's
Crisis Service is one of the largest sex~al
assault/domestic violence programs in northern New England. During the following six
years, I published an assortment of fiction
and non-fiction, including news features for
the Gay Community News, a story for New Hamp shire's Full Circle journal, and an article
on "Confronting Homophobia" in Aegiso In
addition, as New Hampshire ' s lesbian representative to the National Coalition Against
Domestic Violence from 1983 to 1~86, I developed anti-homophobia trainings and dialogued nationally on lesbian battering, internalized homophobia, and custody/civil
rights issues. I am currently working as
fundraiser for Tran·s ition House, a battered
women's shelter in Cambridge, Massach4settso
Through my work, I have met many lesbian survivors of homophobic sexual assault .
Though their circumstances differed, the
common themes of lesbian vulnerability versus the expectation of lesbian strength , the
lesbian community's ambivalence, personal
failure, fury, and the journey to survival
resonated with my own experiences as a survivor of anti-lesbian rape.
I believe that this anthology will fill
a void in the current literature regarding
services to survivors, but, beyond that, it
will expose the extent to which a homophobic
society overlooks, and even condones, crimes
against lesbians" As sexual assault func~
tions to control all women, homophobic sex~
ual assault and its threat is a powerful
means to terrorize lesbians into silence, isolation, and shame. By breaking the silence on this extreme form of terror, the
anthology has the potential to empower survivors and motivate a lesbian/feminist response .
I am telling you a little about my
background because program participants and
potential contributors are often curious about my qualifications for undertaking such
a projecto In addition, I feel compelled to
allay any fears regarding my motives for editing this anthology. I am expecially committed to including the voices of women of
diverse political and socio-economic backgrounds, including women of color, rural,
warking class and physically challenged women.
If you would like further inform~tion,
please feel free to write to me. ThaM you
for your assistance.

and poetryo Topics may include, but are not

NEW CHILD SUPPORT GUIDELINES
UNDER ATTACK
By Paula Brooks
In 1984 Congress unanimously
passed the "Child Support Amendments," a comprehensive package of
tools for states to improve their
collection of court-mandated child
support.
This is especially important to the unsupported children of
Oklahoma, and children whose absent
parent lives in Oklahoma. Thi~ state
is historically one of the least effective in enforcing child support
collections. The latest statistics
from the federal government rank Oklahoma SOth out of 54 juti~dictions
in effectiveness for 1986.
The Section requiring states to
adopt uniform guidelines in setting
child support awards by Oct. 1, 1987,
recently gained significance for many
Oklahomans. On Sept. 29 the Oklahoma
Supreme Court ruled that a formula
~ubmitted by the Oklahoma Bar Association was superior to others examined by the Child Support Advisory
Committee.

The formula is simple - both
parents can easily understand their
obligations to their child(ren) even
before deciding to divorce. Because
it is an "income-shoring" formula,
both custodial and non-custodial contributions are represented. This
offers at least a psychological recognition by the noncustodial parent
that he or she is not the only one
"paying out" for the child(ren).
Since the formula is non-gender specific, it assures the fath~r
who is awarded custody the same f inancial help as the custodial mother.
It also requires judges to justify
in writing why they deviate from
the formula.
A lot of men don't: like the
formula - judges, attorneys, noncustodial fathers and some legislators. Child support awards went up
from an average $150 or or less per
month for each child to a more realistic amount. Two state senators,
Jerry Pierce and Jerry Smith, plan to
initiate legislation to change the
new guidelines.
It's time for all women and all
children's groups to stand up for
equitable child support guidelines.
If you have any questions about
the new guidelines or the politics
invol~ed, please call Paul~ Brooks
at 391-4027.

min's dance at the First Unitarian Church in
Oklahoma City. They have followed that first
success with a dance each month with some
dances holding special attractions. Comic
Hilary Harris was featured at the July dance.
In September dancers rocked to the live music
of the Shartels. And, October's dance offered prizes for those who came dressed in the
true spirit of Halloween.
As Helen, President of Rainbow Productions explains, "The vision behind the dances
was to provide an opportunity for wimmin who
enjoy music and dancing and meeting and visiting with other wimmin to come together and
enjoy an event each month. We've planned an
event once a month so wimmin can look forward
to and rely on a regular 'happening'. Theother part of the vision was to hopefully
raise money to produce concerts by wimmin musicians. Part of the profit from the dances
is shared with Herland Sister Resources, and
part is used as 'seed money' to be able to
fund concerts."
That seed money was used last month to
help bring the wonderfully talented black guitarist/singer/songwriter Deidre Mccalla to Oklahoma City.(see related article in this Newsletter).
"It is our sincere hope that Rainbow Productions will provide the type of entertainment and events that support you and other wimmi n as we continue to grow strong and free --wimmin of all ages, backgrounds and color -wimmin creating our own community!".
In order to get an accurate feel for
what the loca~ wimmin's community wants to

distributes a questionnaire at every event
asking for each person's preferences and

JUST ASK IMA
Around the Country
Dear Ima,
So I was breathing down the neck of
this hot little thing down at DJ's last
week when she turned around, looked me
right in the eye and asked me if I had
gloves at my house. Before I could shut
my mouth, she was all over me about AIDS
and safe sex and some other stuff I've
never heard of before . I was completely
floored. I had to just walk away from it.
What's the deal? I thought lesbians
couldn't get AIDS! Please, help me, Ima.
I'm desperate. I'm afraid to go out.
I've just spent four consecutive nights
watching network television!

The new Lesbian Information Line,

Terri Fied
Dear Terri,
Calm down, Darlin'. Next to celebates,
lesbians have the lowest AIDS incident rate,
so far.
F.Y.I.: The high risk groups include
IV drug users, gay or bisexual men, persons
having blood transfusions between 1979 and
1984, and persons whose sex partners belong
to one of the previously-listed groups. It
could also be dangerous to have sex with
anyone who has had sex with anyone in any of
these risk groups.
Of course, in a questionable situation,
my motto is, "No glove, no love". At any
rate, it is each woman's -responsibility to
get to know her sex partner before she hops
into bed with her (or -him).
If you would like more information,
Terri, I have a friend who is a nurse. Her
name is Edith. She is also a pretty good
bowler. Anyway, she knows all about AIDS
and lesbians (not necessarily in that order)
and told me that she would be happy to an~
swer any questions anyone might have.
Thank you for your letter, Terri. May
good, safe sex come to you.

DJ FUNDRAISER HELPS HERLAND'S
BUILDING FUND
Many thanks go out to DJ from the
Herland collective for sponsoring a fundraiser at her club for Herland.
On October 28 and 29 Herland held a
series of cake walks and a "fishing pond"
at DJ's place. The events raised money
for Herland's Building Fund, which is in
need of bolstering for closing expenses
on the new building at 2312 NW 39th.
After closing on November 30, money will
be needed for materials to do major repairs and necessary remodeling 9 and
starting on Saturday, December 5 work
will be done on the new building every
weekend until all renovations are completedo So, get out your work clothes, and
find your hammer and paint brush and come
on down and join in this herstoric event!
DJ's generosity and devotion to the
OKC wimmin's community reflects the spirit
of our community and is an example of the
cohesion and sisterhood experienced by
those who involve themselves with supporting Oklahoma City's wimmin.

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED
ANTI-LESBIAN SEXUAL ASSAULT?
"Two years after the rape I realized it
was homophobic violence; he had, after all,
followed me home from a gay bar • . Suddenly,
I felt vulnerable, totally alone . It was as
if my whole world turned upside-downo"
"When my lover's parents came, I was in
shock. Her lesbianism was not mentioned ,
let alone the dyke - hating notes she had received the month before. Her rape and murder was not random, and the silence infuriated me.
11
Dear HSR :
The following information has been sent
to organizations like yours across the country in an effort to reach as many lesbians
as possible. Extensions on the posted dead1ine for submissions may be requested in
writing.
I am excited about the response I have
received, both from publishers and lesbians
generally. I am a lesbian feminist active
in the anti-rape movement for over six years.
I received my masters in feminist theology
·from Harvard Divinity School in 1981, and
began working as program director of the Women's Crisis Service in Manchester, New Hamp shire. Serving over 130 rape survivors and
1,000 battered wo~en annually, the Women's
Crisis Service is one of the largest sex~al
assault/domestic violence programs in northern New England. During the following six
years, I published an assortment of fiction
and non-fiction, including news features for
the Gay Community News, a story for New Hamp shire's Full Circle journal, and an article
on "Confronting Homophobia" in Aegiso In
addition, as New Hampshire ' s lesbian representative to the National Coalition Against
Domestic Violence from 1983 to 1~86, I developed anti-homophobia trainings and dialogued nationally on lesbian battering, internalized homophobia, and custody/civil
rights issues. I am currently working as
fundraiser for Tran·s ition House, a battered
women's shelter in Cambridge, Massach4settso
Through my work, I have met many lesbian survivors of homophobic sexual assault .
Though their circumstances differed, the
common themes of lesbian vulnerability versus the expectation of lesbian strength , the
lesbian community's ambivalence, personal
failure, fury, and the journey to survival
resonated with my own experiences as a survivor of anti-lesbian rape.
I believe that this anthology will fill
a void in the current literature regarding
services to survivors, but, beyond that, it
will expose the extent to which a homophobic
society overlooks, and even condones, crimes
against lesbians" As sexual assault func~
tions to control all women, homophobic sex~
ual assault and its threat is a powerful
means to terrorize lesbians into silence, isolation, and shame. By breaking the silence on this extreme form of terror, the
anthology has the potential to empower survivors and motivate a lesbian/feminist response .
I am telling you a little about my
background because program participants and
potential contributors are often curious about my qualifications for undertaking such
a projecto In addition, I feel compelled to
allay any fears regarding my motives for editing this anthology. I am expecially committed to including the voices of women of
diverse political and socio-economic backgrounds, including women of color, rural,
warking class and physically challenged women.
If you would like further inform~tion,
please feel free to write to me. ThaM you
for your assistance.
·
In Sisterhood~
Sharon M. Vardatira
Pursuant to the above letter from Ms.
Vardatira , submissions are being accepted
for an anthology focusing on the experiences
and feelings of lesbians whose sexual assault by men was motivated by anti-lesbian
sentiment . Lesbian survivors/victims and
their friends and lovers are invited to submit short stories , jo4rnal entr{es, essays,
and poetryo Topics may include, but are not
limited to, the fol l owing:
• Circumstances of the assault or attempted
assault

NEW CHILD SUPPORT GUIDELINES
UNDER ATTACK
By Paula Brooks
In 1984 Congress unanimously
passed the "Child Support Amendments," a comprehensive package of
tools for states to improve their
collection of court-mandated child
support.
This is especially important to the unsupported children of
Oklahoma, and children whose absent
parent lives in Oklahoma. Thi~ state
is historically one of the least effective in enforcing child support
collections. The latest statistics
from the federal government rank Oklahoma SOth out of 54 juti~dictions
in effectiveness for 1986.
The Section requiring states to
adopt uniform guidelines in setting
child support awards by Oct. 1, 1987,
recently gained significance for many
Oklahomans. On Sept. 29 the Oklahoma
Supreme Court ruled that a formula
~ubmitted by the Oklahoma Bar Association was superior to others examined by the Child Support Advisory
Committee.

The formula is simple - both
parents can easily understand their
obligations to their child(ren) even
before deciding to divorce. Because
it is an "income-shoring" formula,
both custodial and non-custodial contributions are represented. This
offers at least a psychological recognition by the noncustodial parent
that he or she is not the only one
"paying out" for the child(ren).
Since the formula is non-gender specific, it assures the fath~r
who is awarded custody the same f inancial help as the custodial mother.
It also requires judges to justify
in writing why they deviate from
the formula.
A lot of men don't: like the
formula - judges, attorneys, noncustodial fathers and some legislators. Child support awards went up
from an average $150 or or less per
month for each child to a more realistic amount. Two state senators,
Jerry Pierce and Jerry Smith, plan to
initiate legislation to change the
new guidelines.
It's time for all women and all
children's groups to stand up for
equitable child support guidelines.
If you have any questions about
the new guidelines or the politics
invol~ed, please call Paul~ Brooks
at 391-4027.

MORE EXPRESSIONS
min's dance at the First Unitarian Church in
Oklahoma City.
In order to get an accurate feel for
what the loca~ wimmin's community wants to
see and hear and do, Rainbow Productions
distributes a questionnaire at every event
asking for each person's preferences and
input. In order to fill the needs of the
area's wimmin Rainbow says they need to
hear from you. So, if you want more information, want to express your preferences,
or want to help with Rainbow Productions

Dear Herland Sisters,
It is rare
in my travels
or at home
to find such heartfelt support
and mature respect
for an artist.
There is not one moment
within my experience with you
that created stress
or frustration.
This is an incredible compliment,
because
producers always seem
to forget something,
or just don't follow through.
Your concern for my comfort
and food and rest
touched me so deeply.
As I continue on my journey with m1'V1music
I carry your love and I let your respE
keep me strong in difficult times.
Congratulations on the most well-produced

In return for your gifts

I send you
my heartfelt support

JUST ASK IMA
Around the Country
Dear Ima,
So I was breathing down the neck of
this hot little thing down at DJ's last
week when she turned around, looked me
right in the eye and asked me if I had
gloves at my house. Before I could shut
my mouth, she was all over me about AIDS
and safe sex and some other stuff I've
never heard of before . I was completely
floored. I had to just walk away from it.
What's the deal? I thought lesbians
couldn't get AIDS! Please, help me, Ima.
I'm desperate. I'm afraid to go out.
I've just spent four consecutive nights
watching network television!
WHEN IN DALLAS ••••
Wimmin visiting the Dallas area now

of information to refer to
when in 11 Big D11 •
The new Lesbian Information Line,
better known as 11 LIL 11 , was developed as a
service to the lesbian community to impart
information on local and national events ·
and to provide referrals. So, next time
you're in Dallas and want to know what's
happening in town or where to find the
action, give LIL a call at (214) 528-2426.
Terri Fied
Dear Terri,
Calm down, Darlin'. Next to celebates,
lesbians have the lowest AIDS incident rate,
so far.
F.Y.I.: The high risk groups include
IV drug users, gay or bisexual men, persons
having blood transfusions between 1979 and
1984, and persons whose sex partners belong
to one of the previously-listed groups. It
could also be dangerous to have sex with
anyone who has had sex with anyone in any of
these risk groups.
Of course, in a questionable situation,
my motto is, "No glove, no love". At any
rate, it is each woman's -responsibility to
get to know her sex partner before she hops
into bed with her (or -him).
If you would like more information,
Terri, I have a friend who is a nurse. Her
name is Edith. She is also a pretty good
bowler. Anyway, she knows all about AIDS
and lesbians (not necessarily in that order)
and told me that she would be happy to an~
swer any questions anyone might have.
Thank you for your letter, Terri. May
good, safe sex come to you.
