SPRING RETREAT
What can I say about this
year's Spring Retreat? If
you've ever been to one,
you KNOW what you missed,
so stop reading this article. I can't be responsible for your reactions.
If you've never been to
one, you missed out on a
weekend of fun, food, sport
and the chance to meet new
people.
I arrived before everyone else and had an opportunity to marvel at how
quiet it was. I knew it
wouldn't be long until the
place would come alive with
the sounds of campers unpacking, registering, finding the bathrooms, making
new friends, and renewing
old acquaintances.
Great weather, entertainment, energy and spirit
provided a wonderful setting for another great retreat.
The threat of rain Saturday night did not convince
Judy Fjel l and the rest of
the campers that her concert should be held indoors. With a full moon as
backdrop, Judy entertained
us with her music and monologue. Her humor and creative
lyrics
left
the
audience rolling in the
grass. I guess you could
say she "brought the sky
down" instead of the house.
The multi-talented pe rfo rme r also conducted a workshop on music empowerment
Saturday morning that was
educational and fun.
When it comes to the biggest hit of the weekend,
it's a toss up between Judy
and the potluck dinner Saturday night. Campers, you
out-did yourselves again.
When Sunday rolled around
the campsite was still
alive with the sounds of
campers, but this time the
sounds were of packing,
goodbyes,
keep-in-touches
and directions for cleaning
up.
How different those
sounds are, one set being
alive and excited,
the
other being sad, exhausted
and a bit melancholy.
A great deal of thanks
goes out to Camp Di rector
LaOra for all her hard
work, to Pam T. and Jill W.
for dragging their bodies
out of bed each morning to
make breakfast for everyone, to those who conducted
workshops, to Judy Fjell
for making her first trip
to Oklahoma to share her
talent with us, to those
board members who took time
out from having fun to work
and to you, our campers,
for being the motivating
factor for holding the retreats.

A MATTER OF PRIDE
Oklahoma's Second Annual
Gay and Lesbian Pride March
will be held June 18.
March festivities will
begin at 2 p.m. at Memorial
Park, 36th and Cl assen,
with entertainment by Peggy
Johnson, Michael Allen and
others. Emcee for the premarch festivities is Keith
Smith.
The march will begin at 3
p.m., proceeding north from
the park to NW 39th St.,
then west on NW 39th past
Pennsylvania Ave., concluding at Barnes, where the
block party will be held.
Oklahoma City's Human
Rights Commission has been
asked to serve as Grand
Marshals for the march.
Honored guests will be the
supportive
families
and
friends of gays and lesbians.
Gay Helpline volunteers
will supply water for marchers at Memorial Park before the march, at the
halfway point and at the
end of the march.
Nationally, this year's
ce l eb ration has been named
"Stonewall Twenty: A generation of Pride. 11
Tshirts will be available at
the march and the block
party, and during the rest
of Gay Pride Week at Oasis
Community Center.
Tom M. is organizing a
small band for the march.
If you are interested, call
(405 )232-2725.
As with last year's
march, the Oklahoma City
Police will provide protection along the parade
route, while marshals from
participating organizations
will help maintain order.
A training session for marshals will be held June 15,
7:30 p.m., at Oasis Community Center.
Anyone wishing to par-
ticipate in the march must
follow the below guidelines
for marching.
Please remember that we are trying
to put our best foot forward in a place where
others are just waiting for
us to give them an excuse
to punish us more:
1. No drinking or drugs
at the park before the
march, during the march or
on the street at the block
party.
2.
If heckled, do not
heckle back.
Smile and
proceed with your good
times.
3. No provocation of violence.
4. No obscenities shall
be displayed on banners,
placards or floats participating in the march.
5.
No masks or bags
covering your face.
Even though precautions
are taken to prevent the
media from filming marchers
and police protection is
provided, some gays and
lesbians still feel uncomfortable marching in the
parade. These people will
be represented by balloons
on a stick that may be
purchased at Oasis Community Center for $1. The
balloon will be carried to
symbolize the absence of a
gay or lesbian due to the
discrimination in Oklahoma.
Herland is offering clown
make-up for those who wish
to march but are still
somewhat afraid. The makeup will be available at the
Resource Center before the
pre-march festivities at
the park, then at the park
before the march begins for
all who wish to use it. It
has been suggested that you
wear clothing that cannot
readily identify you if you
choose to remain anonymous.
Herland will also have a
table at the block party
with the latest selections
in titles for men and women.
Zoom Beach will once
again close out Gay Pride
Week.
It wil 1 be held at
Lake Thunderbird on Sunday,
June 25, from 1 p.m.-6 p.m.
and is hosted by Oasis Community Center. There will
be swimming, volleyball,
games and fun in the sun.
For mus ica 1 entertainment,
several local entertainers
will be present along with
taped programming by local
DJs.
Hot
Admission is free.
dogs and necessary fixings
will be provided.
You can get to Zoom B,~ach
by going east on Alametta in
Norman to the end of the
highway, then turn left.
Signs will be posted to
guide you the rest of the
way.
Letters to the Editor
I
Dear Editor:
A special thank you goes
out to the lesbian community of Oklahoma for
their support of the Names
Project Quilt.
I feel a unity never
before felt has been attained in the gay and lesbian community because of
this event.
It is unfortunate that
the health cr1s1s brings
about this unity; however,
it is better now than never
happening.
Again, many, many thanks.

A MATTER OF PRIDE
Oklahoma's Second Annual
Gay and Lesbian Pride March
will be held June 18.
March festivities will
begin at 2 p.m. at Memorial
Park, 36th and Cl assen,
with entertainment by Peggy
Johnson, Michael Allen and
others. Emcee for the premarch festivities is Keith
Smith.
The march will begin at 3
p.m., proceeding north from
the park to NW 39th St.,
then west on NW 39th past
Pennsylvania Ave., concluding at Barnes, where the
block party will be held.
Oklahoma City's Human
Rights Commission has been
asked to serve as Grand
Marshals for the march.
Honored guests will be the
supportive
families
and
friends of gays and lesbians.
Gay Helpline volunteers
will supply water for marchers at Memorial Park before the march, at the
halfway point and at the
end of the march.
Nationally, this year's
ce l eb ration has been named
"Stonewall Twenty: A generation of Pride. 11
Tshirts will be available at
the march and the block
party, and during the rest
of Gay Pride Week at Oasis
Community Center.
Tom M. is organizing a
small band for the march.
If you are interested, call
(405 )232-2725.
As with last year's
march, the Oklahoma City
Police will provide protection along the parade
route, while marshals from
participating organizations
will help maintain order.
A training session for marshals will be held June 15,
7:30 p.m., at Oasis Community Center.
Anyone wishing to par-
ticipate in the march must
follow the below guidelines
for marching.
Please remember that we are trying
to put our best foot forward in a place where
others are just waiting for
us to give them an excuse
to punish us more:
1. No drinking or drugs
at the park before the
march, during the march or
on the street at the block
party.
2.
If heckled, do not
heckle back.
Smile and
proceed with your good
times.
3. No provocation of violence.
4. No obscenities shall
be displayed on banners,
placards or floats participating in the march.
5.
No masks or bags
covering your face.
Even though precautions
are taken to prevent the
media from filming marchers
and police protection is
provided, some gays and
lesbians still feel uncomfortable marching in the
parade. These people will
be represented by balloons
on a stick that may be
purchased at Oasis Community Center for $1. The
balloon will be carried to
symbolize the absence of a
gay or lesbian due to the
discrimination in Oklahoma.
Herland is offering clown
make-up for those who wish
to march but are still
somewhat afraid. The makeup will be available at the
Resource Center before the
pre-march festivities at
the park, then at the park
before the march begins for
all who wish to use it. It
has been suggested that you
wear clothing that cannot
readily identify you if you
choose to remain anonymous.
Herland will also have a
table at the block party
with the latest selections
in titles for men and women.
Zoom Beach will once
again close out Gay Pride
Week.
It wil 1 be held at
Lake Thunderbird on Sunday,
June 25, from 1 p.m.-6 p.m.
and is hosted by Oasis Community Center. There will
be swimming, volleyball,
games and fun in the sun.
For mus ica 1 entertainment,
several local entertainers
will be present along with
taped programming by local
DJs.
Hot
Admission is free.
dogs and necessary fixings
will be provided.
You can get to Zoom B,~ach
by going east on Alametta in
Norman to the end of the
highway, then turn left.
Signs will be posted to
guide you the rest of the
way.
Letters to the Editor
I
Dear Editor:
A special thank you goes
out to the lesbian community of Oklahoma for
their support of the Names
Project Quilt.
I feel a unity never
before felt has been attained in the gay and lesbian community because of
this event.
It is unfortunate that
the health cr1s1s brings
about this unity; however,
it is better now than never
happening.
Again, many, many thanks.
