A Letter from the New
President of TOHR
Hello to all current and former TOHR members and friends. Let me take
this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year. With the
start of this new year, we continue to face more challenges as an
organization and as a community. The Pride Center has now been open
for over a year and yet every day people are surprised to hear of it's
existence. The growth process has been slow, but we continue to move
forward. If you haven't seen the Pride Center yet, you should. Look
for the rainbow flag on top of the building.
New Flag for the Pride Center
Soon there will be a new flag flying proudly over
the Pride Center. As some of you may know our
last flag was stolen. Thanks go to Jimmy Flowers
for donating the flag. It is the new glory flag.
Watch for it to go up soon!
This looks to be an exciting year for TOHR. Preparations are already
beginning for the Pride Picnic on June 20, once again being held at
Owen Park. We are also planning a concert in March featuring the
Tulsa Gay Men's Chorus and a return of the TOHR Follies this fall.
Look for definite dates soon. Additionally, we continue to provide
the HIV Testing Clinic and our H.O.P.E. outreach programs. For those
who aren't aware, the testing clinic moved with the HIV RC to its
current location near Harvard on Admiral. A new coordinator for the
clinic, Greg Hisaw, has been hired and he is doing an excellent job.
The testing clinic and outreach programs of H.O.P.E. continue to
flourish under the direction of new Director of HIV Programs, Kristie
Frisbie. And we're gearing up for a banner year at the Pride Center,
with lots of activities beginning over the next couple of months.
Calling All Volunteers
J
Feeling like you want to do something for the
Community? Feeling like you need to get out,
meet people, and be helpful? The Pride Center is
the place for you. We have opportunities for self
motivated members of the Community to help
plan the next Community Picnic, staff the Pride
Center, and many other jobs. We need your skills
to help us bring the community closer together
and the Pride Center can serve to be the focal
point of our community. You can be an important part. Call the Pride Center today to learn
what opportunities are available.
I want to urge all of our former members to rejoin TOHR so that we can
continue to work toward the equal rights and opportunities each and
every one of us deserves. If you don't agree with a decision we make
as a board for TOHR, please let us know, and we will discuss it. If
you don't tell us you have a problem with what we are doing, how can
we even consider your viewpoint. It's important that each one of us do
a3 much as possible:
rejoin TOHR (if you haven't already);
* come to general membership meetings, participate in
discussions and votes on issues as a member
(2nd Tuesday each month);
* come to our board meetings to find out what is going on (1st
Tuesday each month); and
* encourage your partners, friends and colleagues to join and
make their voices heard as well.
*
I strongly encourage all members of the community to join TOHR, be
active in the organization, and support the Pride Center. The Pride
Center exists for all of us. It is our safe space to congregate
without fear of what others will say or do. If you are interested in
volunteering or serving on one of the committees (Activities,
Fundraising, 1998 Pride Picnic) or in using the space at the Pride
Center for one of your events, please call the Pride Center at
743-4297. We will contact you as soon as possible. If you would like
to get in touch with me or any other board member, please call the
Pride Center and leave a message.
Best wishes for a wonderful New Year.
