luue AND BuDDY MILLER
by Jill Garner
Breaking my tradition of only writing about female
artists, there's just no way to talk about Julie Miller without
also talking about her husband and musical partner, Buddy
Miller. While they've never recorded a true duet record
together, their influence on each other's music is unmistakable. Buddy provides musical accompaniment and harmonies for Julie on her records, while she co-writes much of
Buddy's material and provides harmony for him. On both his
and her albums, they get help from such friends as Emmylou
Harris, Steve Earle and Jim Lauderdale.
Their styles are quite different. Buddy's music is honkytonlc country, complete with fiddles and steel guitar, while
Julie's style is more of a pop-rock-folk blend. She can go
from a rocker like "I Need You" right into the aching beauty
of "I Still Cry", joined by the perfection of Patty Griffin's
voice on harmony vocals. Buddy has some beautiful tender
songs, but they never match the emotional depth that Julie
can reach. She said, "I hope people don't get too depressed.
It takes a really more talented songwriter than myself to write
good happy songs ..... I'm going to try to work on it .. butl have
a feeling I'll fail."
One of the true gems on Julie Miller's latest, Broken
Things, is the title song. Miller says she "just pulled it out
'cause I needed a song" and was surprised to find people
liked it. The song was written after the violence in Northern
Ireland in 1993. However, thewords, "Welllheardihatyou
make old things new, so I give these pieces all to you, if you
want it you can have my heart" take on a more poignant
meaning after reading about Miller's depression and past
suicide attempt. She said in a recent interview, "Even though
my life may be so blessed, I have a lot of daily feelings and
thoughts for people who are suffering ... and it just all comes
out when I start singing."
Julie Miller has recorded four Christian albums before
her last two releases on Hightone, Blue Pony in 1997 and
most recently, Broken Things.
Julie Miller' s husband, Buddy, has released 3 records on.
Hightone, the most recent being Cruel Moon. He also plays
guitar with Emmylou Harris' band, the Spyboys. He' s one
of the most sought after talents in Nashville, for good reason.
His voice is wonderful, but his songwriting and musical talent
is, without question, quite impressive. Cruel Moon is full of
great country songs, rockers and ballads, and so much better
than just about anything played on the radio today.
I had heard a couple of songs by Julie and Buddy Miller
before I ever heard them. A number of people have recorded
the Miller' s songs, most notably Suzy Boggus and Garth
Brooks ("Take me Back"), the Dixie Chicks ("Hole in My
Head"), and Brooks and Dunn ("My Love Will Follow
You").
Page 2 Herland Voice March, 2000
I could go on for quite some time about the Millers but I
don't have room and I hope you check them out yourself.
Their CDs are pretty readily available around Oklahoma (at
Rainbow Records, Borders and Hastings anyway). I highly
recommend either one of them depending on your tastes, or
both for those with broader tastes. The nice thing is no matter
which of their CDs you buy, you get to hear and experience
the talent of both. I strongly recommend them. Please, turn
off your radio and listen to a couple of people you should be
hearing on the radio.
The Millers rarely perform together but they' re doing a
show in Dallas in April that I hope to be lucky enough to see.
Greg Johnson tried to get them here but unfortunately they
can't come. I'll let you know ifl make it. I'm sure I won't
be able to keep it to myself1
Happy listening!

FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS UNDER
FIRE IN SEATTLE
Cheri Honkala, Directory of the Kensington Welfare
Rights Union and the National Spokesperson for the Poor
People's Economic Human Rights Campaign, was among
those arrested on November 29, 1999 in Seattle while
protesting the World Trade Organization.
Most of the over 500 cases related to the WTO events
have been thrown out ofcourt, but the District Attorney is still
pursuing Cheri' s case. She was offered a plea bargain with
5 days in jail, a $1000 fine and a two-year gag order
prohibiting her participation or involvement in demonstrations
anywhere in the country.
Cheri has turned down the plea bargain because of the
effort to prevent her from exercising her First Amendment
rights to speak out and is scheduled to stand trial on March
14, 2000 in Seattle.
The Poor People' s Economic Human Rights Campaign
is leading a national letterwriting campaign to encourage the
Seattle District Attorney to drop all charges against Cheri
Honlcala. For information about the campaign, see the
