March 1993 The Newsletter of Wom n for Wom n the Lesbian Resource Centre Vol. 4 No. 3
A Few Words ...
by Christine Jarosz
Director/Coordinator
Last month I wrote about an experience I had with my Mother during the holidays. I
wanted to let you know that my Mother was really touched by my article and shared
it with her friends . That, of course, made me very happy. So, I really want to thank
the LRC for the opportunity to write each month. Without it, I probably would not
have had that experience and that experience was very important to me.
I know I wrote that I would write about our finances, and budget, and money matters
this month; but, I don't think I can. This past month, along with 78% of the world, I have
been sick (I hear the collective "oh". Thanks, I appreciate your kindness) and I still have not recovered my wits
(and you are saying, "what wits"?) to write about such an important and intricate matter. So, I hope you can wait
til next month.
One light thing I can write about is personal growth. This year, almost one year to the day, I started to learn to
use the computer ... something I thought I could never do. I just did not allow myself to think that I was capable.
I was an idea person ... an inspirer... not a technically skilled and talented person. I really limited myself. Now I am
getting pretty good at it. I, of course, was very lucky ... I had a very good teacher, Deb Floyd. And, I want to thank
Deb for all the support that she gives to me and to other womyn. She is patient, smart, and very capable. LRC
and I owe her very much . She is just great. But the point is that life is a continuing experience and if you allow
yourself, you can do anything .. .if you just let yourself. Well, so much for this month. Maybe next month I will have
recovered enough to write something interesting. Maybe not.
Thanks to Mary Ellen, Gail, and Jennifer who told me how much they liked my article about my Mom and me last
month. Your kind words mean a lot.

Crisis Intervention Program
Battered Lesbian Project:
February 5, 1993 a meeting with Dallas Lesbian and Gay
Alliance on Domestic Violence was held at the Gay/
Lesbian Community Center.. Christine Jarosz, Artemis,
and Tanea , all of the LRC's Battered Lesbian Project,
attended this meeting called by DGLA Board Member,
Gary Bellamy. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss
ways of introducing the issue of Domestic Violence to the
Lesbian and Gay Community. Since LRC has been
conscious of this issue and been working on it for over 3
years, Gary asked the LRC to participate and bring our
expertise to the meeting. Since there are already programs for womyn, both in the Lesbian and mainstream
communities, the primary focus it seems will be to introduce this area of concern to the Gay Community (meaning men). Approximately 15 people were at this meeting:
Except for Gary, all were womyn. There were lawyers,
police officers, therapists, Battered Lesbians, community
activists, and Program Directors in attendance. LRC
members made certain that everyone knew what the
Centre had and was continuing to do in the area of
Domestic Violence and Crisis Intervention. The information was very well received. The only concern that LRC
representatives had was one that continues to be a critical
issue for womyn. There were 14 womyn there and it
appeared that most of them were interested in spending
their time and energy on issues of interest and benefit to
men. Needless to say that the issue of Domestic Violence
in gay relationships are of importance, but if womyn
continue to abandon the needs of womyn in favor of the
needs of men, where does that leave womyn? LRC plans
to continue to meet and work with DGLA on this project to
insure that womyn 's needs are not overlooked and abandoned. And, we'd like to say that Gary deserves a lot of
credit fortalking on a project that will get little support from
men. Hopefully his stand will help other men take
responsibility for their own lives rather than depending on
the neverending love and nurturing of womyn alone.
The Crisis Intervention Program: Battered Lesbian Project
meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 5:30
at the Centre.

~ SPECIAL THANKS
For those of you who did not attend the WINTER
DANCE put on by the Under 30 Group, you missed a
great party!! The success of this event is due primarily to the hard work and sweat of the following members: Teresa and Jennifer F. for the cleaning and
decorating, J-lene for signs and carpentry skills, and
Amanda and Grace for music and stereo equipment.
A round of applause for all. A special thanks to Jennifer B. for spinning the tunes that kept us dancing,
and Kathy of Sue Ellen's who was kind enough to
provide us with some of the music for the evening, and
Dawyn for taking care of the cash box at the door. Last
but not least, all the wonderful women who pitched in
when the dance was over and the lights came up, -and
helped clean-up and put the Center back together.
The following Saturday, January 31, the Under 30 .
Group ran the extremely successful LRC Cafe during
the Therape Sisters concert. Thanks to Kathy, Kri~ty,
·and Amanda for their hard work. Thanks to everyone
for making these events the successes they were.

Each year MCC sponsors an Auction to benefit three different
Lesbian groups. LRC has always been one of those groups. This
year the auction will be held at the MCC church on April 3 at
6:00pm. Donations of services (hair cuts, yard maintenance, color
counseling, therapy, massages, piano lessons, violin
lessons.painting, etc) and things (jewelry, paintings, clothes, furniture, clothes, anything) are appreciated. Call Dawynn or Lisa to

Sheila's uncle is bringing to the Auction thousands of dollars worth
of leather goods (exotic and erotic-all sorts). Last year Deb bought
a $300 dollar leather jacket for $75.00. There are a lot of great deals
to be had. This is also an event to which we invite all those guys out
there who want to support their sisters and who want to get a good
deal.
There are lots of things that need to be done for this to be a
successful event. There is always a ton of food there ... lots of
someones have to make it and set it up.... someone has to solicit the
donations ...someone has to work the tables .. .someone has to help
with the catalogue ... someone has to clean up ...you know there are
a million things that have to be done on any project. SO, call Lisa
or Dawynn .
The name , "Under30 Group", lacks the pizzazz thatthe dynamic
women of the group are seeking, but we're having trouble
coming up with something better. We are appealing to the
masses for help. We are sponsoring a NAME THE GROUP
contest. Watch for details and a listing of the rules to be posted
at the LRC!
Please suppport our advertisers! Their support helps make
the LRC, and this publication, possible.

Talent Show
The Spring Talent Show is almost on
us. If you want to perform or participate, please call Christine. At the end
of March or April. Call for exact dates.
SRO
Diana Rivers' Performance Art presentation was a
great success! The crowd, which was standing
room only, was very entusiastic, and participated in
the production by dancing and playing musical
insturments, which were distibuted by the troupe.
Local musicians also participated in this creative
and colorful presentation. The event, which was
held on Valentine's Day, generated a very high
energy level shared by all present. Tentatively
scheduled for another event in late fall ... watch for
details if you are interested in participating.
Thanks to all of the women involved, including the
Under 30 Goup (they're everywhere), and all the
local talent, the clean-up crew, security crew, publicity crew, and everyone who worked to make this
event such a success.

THE CIRCLE IS EVER OPEN,
EVER UNBROKEN
Mary K. Grigsby, M.Ed.

by Artemis Silverowl
I made a promise to my Self this past Lam mas (August 1992)
to revive/restart a Wimmin's Dianic Magic Circle in the
Metroplex. After a slow start, I am pleased to say that area
wimmin are showing their interest and support through an ever
increasing numberwho regularly attend these Circles. I would
like to thank the LRC for providing a safe place for gathering
and for enabling news of the rituals to be spread through out
the community via announcements in The Honeypot.
It has been brought to my attention that there are some
wimmin who are hesitant to attend these rituals, because they
have no knowledge of what goes on at a ritual and they don't
know what to bring with them to the Circle. Please do not allow
lack of experience with wimmin's Magic to prevent you from
attending ritual. These rituals are designed to enable and
encourage ALL wimmin the opportunity to dis-cover the
Goddess with in and celebrate Her mysteries.
Generally speaking, the followiing items are used/needed at
ritual :
Festive clothes
1.
Food to share at the ritual feast
2.
Candles, one placed on the altar to represent yourself
3.
and an extra one just in case they're needed for other
things.
A special/magical object to place on the altar; ,this can
4.
include a favorite crystal, feather, statue, floyJers, etc.
Musical
instruments, especially percussion type

RECAP
The evening with The Therape Sisters was an unqualified
success!! Not only was the crowd "Standing room only",
people actually had to be turned away at the door! This
is another instance establishing that the women's community can and will support events and artists.who see
things, and share them, from a unique perspective. Many
thanks to every one who worked so hard. In light of the
fact that not all women who wanted to see th e sh ow were
able to, a larger facillity is being sought for futu re such
events. We don't want anyone to miss out on such great
entertainment.
I would also like to assure wimmin that attendance at a ritual
does not mean that participation in all aspects of the ritual is
mandatory. During the course of the ritual only do the things
that you are comfortable with doing. You can always opt to
step out of any portion of the ritual that you are not comfortable
with doing . Further, you are always able to leave the Circle at
any time if you are not comfortable .
So I would like to extend an invitation to you to come and
attend a ritual .. . take a moment to come closer to your
Goddess Self... and feel the power of Wimmin's Energy.
Blessed Be!

SRO
Diana Rivers' Performance Art presentation was a
great success! The crowd, which was standing
room only, was very entusiastic, and participated in
the production by dancing and playing musical
insturments, which were distibuted by the troupe.
Local musicians also participated in this creative
and colorful presentation. The event, which was
held on Valentine's Day, generated a very high
energy level shared by all present. Tentatively
scheduled for another event in late fall ... watch for
details if you are interested in participating.
Thanks to all of the women involved, including the
Under 30 Goup (they're everywhere), and all the
local talent, the clean-up crew, security crew, publicity crew, and everyone who worked to make this
event such a success.

THE CIRCLE IS EVER OPEN,

Blessed Be!

Call Dawynn or Lisa to
help.

Psychologist
Talent Show
The Spring Talent Show is almost on
us. If you want to perform or participate, please call Christine. At the end
of March or April. Call for exact dates.
SRO
Diana Rivers' Performance Art presentation was a
great success! The crowd, which was standing
room only, was very entusiastic, and participated in
the production by dancing and playing musical
insturments, which were distibuted by the troupe.
Local musicians also participated in this creative
and colorful presentation. The event, which was
held on Valentine's Day, generated a very high
energy level shared by all present. Tentatively
scheduled for another event in late fall ... watch for
details if you are interested in participating.
Thanks to all of the women involved, including the
Under 30 Goup (they're everywhere), and all the
local talent, the clean-up crew, security crew, publicity crew, and everyone who worked to make this
event such a success.

THE CIRCLE IS EVER OPEN,
EVER UNBROKEN
Mary K. Grigsby, M.Ed.
Licensed l'rofessiondl
Counselor
by Artemis Silverowl
5.

Blessed Be!
