The Theme of Heartwings IX 1997 was "Love Knows No Boundaries,"
with Scripture reference of I John 4: 12: "No one has ever seen God; if we
love one another, God abides in us and God's love is perfected in us."
Emphasis was placed on the boundaries we, as a community, place on
each other and how as a comm unity of faith we must remove those
boundaries to take our love on out to the "mainstream" world.
The Conference opened Friday evening with worship service of
Praise, Testimony and Song. It was a very Spirit-filled event and quite
moving. A get-to-know each other happening followed the service as we
had attendees from all four states of our District: Oklahoma Arkansas,
Texas and Louisiana.
Saturday was filled with workshops; as usual, there were those
scheduled opposite each other, making the decision difficult for me.
There are always more workshops than time to attend, but well worth it.
I was especially impressed with a workshop led by our new District
Coordinator, Eleanor Nearly, Making the Connection: Lesbian and Gay
People in Recovery, which explored parallel effects of addiction and
oppression. It was most informative and quite interesting.
Following the other workshops and lunch, there was a DCOL
(District Conference on Laity) business meeting. While it may not sound
like the most interesting part ofmy day, as your Lay Delegate, I went and
was pleasantly surprised to attend a well-run, fast-paced meeting with a
high level of accomplishment.
Saturday evening was again one of the highlights. For the second
year, Marsha Stevens performed in concert, with a Valentine's Dance
following. Marsha's Testimony in Song is one of the most moving events
I've ever experienced ... and I've heard it four times now. The tears always
come and my heart is always filled.
A Sunday morning worship service closed the Conference. To anyone who has never taken the opportunity to attend a Heartwings
Conference, please consider Heartwings X. The location has not yet been
established, but Oklahoma City seems to be a strong contender for the
bid. To attend a Conference completely planned and executed by the
Laity of our Fellowship is in itself a glorious experience. To be with so
may of "US" from around our District is exciting and the Worship
experiences are unsurpassed. After all, some clergy attend, just for the
break.

I ASKED GOD
I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.
I was made weak, that I might learn to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for But everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself,
my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all people, most richly blessed.
