REVIEW
by Ji/I Gamer
I was hoping to be able to say Carrie Newcomer will be
performing here in October. However, it's not going to happen.
The good news is that Cheryl Wheeler will be playing Oklahoma
City October 19th! I have traveled to Dallas and Kansas to hear
Cheryl, and heard her in Colorado Springs when I was visiting
friends. She was wonderful each time. Part of the joy of her
performances is her sense of humor. She's very funny and that's
part of the fun of seeing her. But then there's her voice and her
talented songwriting. She's got some beautiful, and some funny,
songs and a voice that's so smooth and strong, and her voice alone
would have made me a fan. Fortunately she has a lot more to offer
than just that. Her show will be at the City Arts Center. Call 8435789 for more information.
Unfortunately, there is also another good show scheduled
that same night (the 19th) at the Blue Door. The Bums Sisters
will be opening up for Jimmy LaFave. They have very beautiful
harmonies, write most of their own songs, and when they don't,
they do a great job at picking other's songs to cover, and can sing
soft and beautiful or get down on songs like Steve Van Zandt's
song "Patriot" on the Close to Home album.
Speaking of choices, I skipped seeing Claire Lynch in Tulsa
to go see Christine Albert and Chris Gage at the Blue Door
September 6, and I'm not sorry I did. That was one of the best
shows I've seen there. Chris Gage can play the guitar beautifully
and make it look so easy. Plus, he has a beautiful voice and their
voices blending together just made me feel like I was in heaven.
Christine Albert has a strong voice, and a wonderful songwriting
talent, and I was mesmerized. Plus, she was gorgeous. Okay,
okay, it's a bonus. I'm only human for god's sake! And, she sang
a couple of songs in French. My god, I was done for. I'm sorry
for all of you who missed such wonderful music. Greg Johnson,
who runs the Blue Door, thinks they'll be back in 6 months or so,
and I'm telling you now, they're great and you shouldn't miss
them a second time!
Wende Allyn - Catalina Days
It's here! Wende Allyn's CD is out. I was browsing the music
section at Borders the other day and saw Wende' s CD there for
sale. How cool is that?
I've been fortunate to hear Wende sing live several times,
sometimes by herself and sometimes with others. The nice thing
about a CD is you can add a lot of musicians that you can't always
play live with, and that's one of my favorite things about hearing
Wende's CD. She has some good musicians on this release and
it really adds a lotto her music. Wende has a lot of talent at writing
songs and has a very pretty, unique voice that she uses well.
Some of my old favorites are on the CD, as well as some new
surprises I've never heard before. One of my favorites is "Ben and
Beni." The' song is lively and fun and the words, about an offbeat
couple who get married, are great. "Well Beni wasn't queen of
her high school class, With her best girlfriends she liked to sit in
the back, And talk about a boy who wasn't cool, She liked the
tattoo on his arm,'Nobody's Fool'. He was a real hard worker,
never wanted to lead, You won't find his picture in the most
likely." Plus, all the background vocals are great! It sounds like
a chorus. "Cripple Creek", a wild west story of a sheriff's
corruption, and "Marilyn in the Moon" are two nice surprises too
2 Her/and Voice October, 1997
"I
that I haven't heard, or heard much. "Lonely Baby", a longtime
favorite of 1nine that I never can stop singing around the house
after hearing it, is on the CD, along with other Wende standards
that she has shared during her live performances
I think my favorite songs ofWende's delve more deeply into
the subject at hand, and the phrases areL1't as simple. Many of
her lyrics on songs like "Always Love You", "Catalina Days",
"For You", have short, sharp lines, and while I like those songs
for a few listens, I tire of them quickly. I'd like more challenge
from the songs. But, nonetheless, I think she's very good at
songwriting and it's my own personal choice to like songs that I
have to figure out.
One of my biggest disappointments of the CD was on "Wa1k
By the River," one ofWende's best songs. I liked the line when
I've heard it sung live about a woman who is married and falls in
love with a preacher's daughter. "She got down on her knees and
asked for God to forgive the love inside her." The word daughter
was changed to brother on the CD and for me it lessened the heartwrenching quality of that part of the song, and I love heartwrenching. However, the cello on the song was a great choice,
played by Fred Harstadt, and I think it makes a beautiful song even
prettier.
But hey, listen to it yourself1 It's a good CD and I look
forward to hearing more new songs from Wende. Check out her
live shows too around Oklahoma City and Norman. Go hear this
up-and-coming artist while you can!D
THEY'RE BACK

eclectic duo, Lisa Rogers and Maurine McLean, has entertained at

Retreat, will present some of
·
the finest women songwriters in the region. There'll be some new
voices: Deb Mills, a young woman from Oklahoma City who has
recently been playing in a group with Peggy Johnson and Amy

Fuller.
Saturday evening, Circle ofFriends, will entertain us in their
own special way. Kristal! Bright, Cathy Cahill, Donna DeSalvo
and Tammy King join forces for a energetic musical experience.
After the concert, there'll be an open jam session and, as always,
tl1e campfire will provide the opportunity for everyone to make
music.
Several workshops/discussion groups are planned for the
weekend. Poetry writing, paganism, American Sign Language
and massage therapy, are all subjects for exploration.

There are lots of opportunities for unplanned recreational
activities during the weekend. With somewhere around 100
women in attendance, there's sure to be something interesting
going on all the time.
In addition, Lake Murray offers swimming, skiing, scuba
diving, golf, tennis, sailing, marina, hiking and motorcycle trails,
horseback riding, remote control flying, fun boats, miniature
golf, fishing, field trial grounds, and an airstrip. Tucker Tower
Nature Center is a museum of natural history managed by the
Lake Murray State Park.

Saturday night, a late supperon Friday, and breakfast on Saturday
and Sunday. There is limited space for tents and recreational
vehicles in the campground. Preregistration fees are on a sliding
scale based on income. To preregister send tl1e registration form

REVIEW
by Ji/I Gamer
