A Few Words
Lesbians, Domestic Violence, the Family Place, & the LRC
by Christine Jarosz,
Director/Coordinator
For many years, as
long as the Cent re has
been in existence , LRC
has had strong ties to
the Family Pl ace, the
first Battered Woman 's
Shelter in
Dallas .
Some of us helped get
it started and some of
us have worked hard to
keep it going. LRC
gives a lot of our
excess donations to
the Fa ■ ily Place .. . clothes, usually, but, recently
21 gallons of shampoo, soap, and anti -perspirant
concentrate . (This is actuaily over 100 gallons of
product . . a very nice donation.) Now the trick about
this donation is that the Shelter needs bottles to
dispense this stuff ; So .. . . . . . instead of throwing
out
your old
empty shampoo
or lotion
bottles . .. please rinse and bring them to LRC. Now
this is what is called grass roots support of women
and their needs . ... everyone can participate and at
no cost. (We are all recycling , too!) So, please
bring these eapty bottles to the Centre ... S OO N.
Along with the family Place, the .LRC is working
with all the other Battered No ■ en's Shelters in
Dallas. The Do111estic Violence (Battered/Battering
Lesbian) Project is educating those organizations
about the special needs of Lesbians and the
Resources available to the•. Special tra ining
sess ions with the Shelters are being planned and
scheduled. So far, the Project is being met with
i nterest , support , and enthusiasm. In the meantime ,
Refe rral s to professional therapists and the Peer
Counse ling Pr ogramof Womyn for Womyn conti nue.
Vio lence in Lesbian relationsh ips is a diff icult
iss ue for· us to face . But, it mus t be do ne. Womyn
in these si tuat ions ■ ust receive aid , educatio n,
and support . In a co11unity of wo■ y n , it is
important tha t we take ca re of our own. In this
world, when the e1phasis is on AIDS/HIV, the other
physical and mental health issues of wo■yn are
usually ignored. N o■ yn and al l their heal th issues
must be addressed by us . .. no one else conce rns
themselves with our needs . This Do■estic Vi olence
Project will expand beyond what is nor ■ally in our
daily lives . . the progra ■ will help wo■yn we may
never know or see .. but it wil l i ■ pact greatly . It
will help educate the Do ■estic Violence Support
Community to the specific needs of Lesbians: it
will help eli minate Lesbophobia in that co11unity
of Mental Health workers: it will provide a safer
envi ron111ent for Lesbian Victi ■s of : Vio1ence : it
will educate the Lesbian and Gay Co11unities about
the prevalence of violence in our co11unities and
the need to stop it: it will educate Lesbians about
Resources and Services available to both Batterers
and the Battered: it will help reduce the stig■ a
associated with battering therefore increasing the
number of wo1yn seeking relief: and, it will
e1power womyn to ■ ove out of these da ■ aging
situations. This is cri ■e and abuse we do to one
another . And we are the only ones who can stop it.
If you can help on this project, please call
Christine Jarosz at 821-3999. This progra■ will
require great energy and great cost. Nhen you
consider
making
donations
to
charitable
organizations, reme1ber this and other Centre
projects. We are a tax deductible, tax exe ■ pt

Facilities Committee Works Hard
This very important committee is responsible for
the upkeep of the Centre building itself, as well
as the gardens and surrounding area. Mowing,
gardening, weeding are some of the outside activities. Inside, the Committee is responsible for:
keeping the kitchen and bathroo1s stocked with
supplies; cleaning; sNeeping; pro-tecting pipes
from freezing; maintaining the heating and air
conditioning systems; emptying trash; defrosting
the refrigerators; replacing window panes; keeping
up the office machines; making sure everything is
protected from possible rain damage (yes, we have
leaks); preparing the facility for events; painting
and making repairs; locating donations for the
Centre. This is not the gla1our committee-there is
very little praise aJld _rJcognition for J he work
done by these faithful & I 1ight say, highly
responsible wo1yn. It is like taking care of your
house, no one notices hoN good it looks only how
bad it looks. So1etimes it is drudgery .. just ask
Lisa Mashigian. It is never ending, but it is
totally necessary.Nothing else can get done if this
committee does not do its task. Interested? Uh,huh.
Thought so!Well,if you are please call Christine
who will be glad to show vou around.

Letter to the Centre
Dear Christine:
You were absolutely right when you said, "Ne are
saving wo1yn's lives and sanity,· in last month's
"Honeypot" regarding the i1portance of our phone
line. Today I was at the Centre when not one, but
two womyn needed the services of the LRC. It was
an incredible experience knowing I · was helping
other womyn get the infor1ation and support they
needed when they needed it. I would encourage all
who are able to volunteer their knowledge and
experience to our co11unity to do so. Thanks to
Vicki and Lyn who answered the phone on Sunday, and
Christine, who ans•ers the phone EVERYDAY!

Alternative Visions Offers New Options
by Mendi Phoenix
Three years ago, an idea
was conceived and now that
it has utured, destiny
will see it to beco1e one
of
the
hottest
institutions to hit our
comnity. The young man
to give life to this
concept, Trudi Stinson, is a petite, native born firecracker
who will stop at nothing to ensure that Dallas' first
lesbian/gay video dating service is a reputable option for
mting potential life aates. When asked what aade her
believe she could start a business of this sort, Trudi
responded by proclai1ing a confidence in her abilities to be
persistent, intuitive, and to care deeply about relation•
ships between people. In addition, after spending her
earlier dating years being frustrated by the tunnel visioned
attitudes of cliques, drugs and unsafe sex coupled with the
realization of the risks involved in personal ads, she
decided that there was a void • a need in our comnity and
that she possessed the resources to help fill the void and
nurture the need. In fact, one of these resources, a gift to
perceive hum chnistry, was called upon by her friends who
wanted to mt others with who• they could share their tile,
energy, and interests. These are a few of the foundational
co1ponents integrated into the entity known as Alternative
Visions. As an interested consum, all of your questions
will be addressed during a free consultation which will fa1iliarize you with the staff and services offered. Once a
1e1ber, a 1eeting will be scheduled so that you can co1plete
an interest/permality profile to be housed in a confidential file. Next, an appointmt will be set at your
convenience and at your location of choice so that a
videotape can be created. This will be your ti1e to shine,
so talk about whatever feels co1fortable for you. Incidentally, the videotape will not be ready for viewing until you
are satisfied with the end result. The written profile plus
your personally approved video will be used to aatch you
with four other mbers chosen by the staff, and with your
per- 1ission, offered for private viewing. Alternative
Visions offers its mbers a guarantee of four dates within
six 1onths, or your mbership is extended up to a year.
Disclaim: Ho liability is asmed by Alternative Visions
for the health status of its mbers. This infmation will
be the responsibility of the individual. So, what are you
waiting for? If you're tired of the bar scenes, bored by
the personals and you are ready for a serious relationship,
call Alternative Visions at (214) 823-8392 so you can see
that 'Jove doesn't have to be just a vision in your drms. •

More News About the Dallas Police
Acomnity mting (1eaning Lesbian and Gay comnity) •ith
Police Chief Harvin Bullard m held a fe• mks ago.
Representatives fro• the Police Departmt, the Parks and
Recreation Departmt, the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance,
Gays and Lesbians Allied Against Defmtion, and the Lesbian
Resource Centre attended this mting. Under discussion me
the recent arrests of Gay, and other, m for public
le•dness in City Parks. (Yes, this is one issue not exactly
related to our lives!) LRC m there, basically, to listen
to the conversation. The Chief said his job m to
eli1inate crile ... all kinds ... 1uggings, theft, assault, and
public lndness (overt sexual activity). Gay leaders me
upset that m perfming public sex me being arrested.
They thought the P~lice should be concentrating on those
cri1inals •ho me to the Parks to rob, assault, and 1ug
those having sex. They me concerned that the Police mid
not have arrested heterosexual couples having sex in the
Park. So this beme an issue of discrilination against
Gays. They me also concerned that Police Officers me
entrapping their victi1s by wearing 'enticing clothes'. The
Police had warned the Gay Comnity several mths ago that
there would be a mpaign to reduce Cri1e in the Parks.
Al though this is not a Lesbian proble1, LRC us advised by
DGLA and asked to put a warning in our newsletter (which we
did). The Gay Conunity had plenty of tiae to get the word
out. Although IOSt Gay leaders said that they agreed with
the policy against Public Lewdness, they me still upset
that these m me being arrested. They claiaed that the
m who cm to the Park me probably not part of the
organized conunity which knew about the pending raids in
the Park ... that these m probably had psychological
problm ... that these m me probably heterosexuals. A
lot of ti1e us spent defending these m for their actions.
A lot of ti1e and effort went into deter1ining ho• to
protect these m fro1 arrest. It was suggested that to stop
the activities in the Parks would require a ujor
cooperative action between the Police, the Gay Conunity,
the Parks and Recreation Depart1ent, the local citizens, and
the local Kedia. Froa a man's point of view, the whole
thing semd fairly convoluted. The Gay leaders kept
referring to this as a Lesbian/Gay issue ... which it is not.
Defending m who break the law because they are not
infomd about possible arrest or who have psychological
proble1s or who are heterosexual is avoiding the issue.
Bluing the Police Departmt for entrapmt i1plies that
m have no 1inds or wills of their m. If these m were
forced to have sex ... that's another issue. Gay ·leaders mt
the Park to be safe .. but for who1? If Police are unduly
harassing people in the Park, okay, that's a proble1. If
they are arresting people in the Park who are having sex,
that's not a proble1. Kaybe, people are not considering the
entire comnity (mning the people of the City of
Oallas ... wom, m, and children). Public Sex is bad
behavior ... it insults, e1barrasses, and causes bad feelings
for those people •hose hom border on these Parks.
Children should not be exposed to this. And wo1en do not
want to be. Sensible m avoid the Park. This is not right.
The activities of these fn m give Gays a bad reputation.
It is not right to defend thea. Crilinals do cm to these
areas to prey on these easy victi1s. This intrusion of
1uggers, thieves, and robbers ukes the Parks unsafe for
everyone. It mt be understood that the Parks are for
everyone. Protecting •en· gu-i-lty of Public Lewdness sem
like 1isdirected loyalty. It denies the rights of others to
freely use the Parks. The Lesbian Cuaunity and Lesbian
Leaders mt to work with others to uke sure that the
rights of Lesbians l Gays, as well as No1en, are protected l
insured. Defending those who have llO concern for the rights,
safety, l well being of others js not an issue we support.

D0 c 0mb0r 199 2 Th0 Ne wsle tt er of Womyn to r Womyn, the Lesbian Re so urc e Centre Vol . 3 , No. 11

D0 c 0mb0r 199 2 Th0 Ne wsle tt er of Womyn to r Womyn, the Lesbian Re so urc e Centre Vol . 3 , No. 11
A Few Words
Lesbians, Domestic Violence, the Family Place, & the LRC
by Christine Jarosz,
Director/Coordinator
For many years, as
long as the Cent re has
been in existence , LRC
has had strong ties to
the Family Pl ace, the
first Battered Woman 's
Shelter in
Dallas .
Some of us helped get
it started and some of
us have worked hard to
keep it going. LRC
gives a lot of our
excess donations to
the Fa ■ ily Place .. . clothes, usually, but, recently
21 gallons of shampoo, soap, and anti -perspirant
concentrate . (This is actuaily over 100 gallons of
product . . a very nice donation.) Now the trick about
this donation is that the Shelter needs bottles to
dispense this stuff ; So .. . . . . . instead of throwing
out
your old
empty shampoo
or lotion
bottles . .. please rinse and bring them to LRC. Now
this is what is called grass roots support of women
and their needs . ... everyone can participate and at
no cost. (We are all recycling , too!) So, please
bring these eapty bottles to the Centre ... S OO N.
Along with the family Place, the .LRC is working
with all the other Battered No ■ en's Shelters in
Dallas. The Do111estic Violence (Battered/Battering
Lesbian) Project is educating those organizations
about the special needs of Lesbians and the
Resources available to the•. Special tra ining
sess ions with the Shelters are being planned and
scheduled. So far, the Project is being met with
i nterest , support , and enthusiasm. In the meantime ,
Refe rral s to professional therapists and the Peer
Counse ling Pr ogramof Womyn for Womyn conti nue.
Vio lence in Lesbian relationsh ips is a diff icult
iss ue for· us to face . But, it mus t be do ne. Womyn
in these si tuat ions ■ ust receive aid , educatio n,
and support . In a co11unity of wo■ y n , it is
important tha t we take ca re of our own. In this
world, when the e1phasis is on AIDS/HIV, the other
physical and mental health issues of wo■yn are
usually ignored. N o■ yn and al l their heal th issues
must be addressed by us . .. no one else conce rns
themselves with our needs . This Do■estic Vi olence
Project will expand beyond what is nor ■ally in our
daily lives . . the progra ■ will help wo■yn we may
never know or see .. but it wil l i ■ pact greatly . It
will help educate the Do ■estic Violence Support
Community to the specific needs of Lesbians: it
will help eli minate Lesbophobia in that co11unity
of Mental Health workers: it will provide a safer
envi ron111ent for Lesbian Victi ■s of : Vio1ence : it
will educate the Lesbian and Gay Co11unities about
the prevalence of violence in our co11unities and
the need to stop it: it will educate Lesbians about
Resources and Services available to both Batterers
and the Battered: it will help reduce the stig■ a
associated with battering therefore increasing the
number of wo1yn seeking relief: and, it will
e1power womyn to ■ ove out of these da ■ aging
situations. This is cri ■e and abuse we do to one
another . And we are the only ones who can stop it.
If you can help on this project, please call
Christine Jarosz at 821-3999. This progra■ will
require great energy and great cost. Nhen you
consider
making
donations
to
charitable
organizations, reme1ber this and other Centre
projects. We are a tax deductible, tax exe ■ pt

Facilities Committee Works Hard
This very important committee is responsible for
the upkeep of the Centre building itself, as well
as the gardens and surrounding area. Mowing,
gardening, weeding are some of the outside activities. Inside, the Committee is responsible for:
keeping the kitchen and bathroo1s stocked with
supplies; cleaning; sNeeping; pro-tecting pipes
from freezing; maintaining the heating and air
conditioning systems; emptying trash; defrosting
the refrigerators; replacing window panes; keeping
up the office machines; making sure everything is
protected from possible rain damage (yes, we have
leaks); preparing the facility for events; painting
and making repairs; locating donations for the
Centre. This is not the gla1our committee-there is
very little praise aJld _rJcognition for J he work
done by these faithful & I 1ight say, highly
responsible wo1yn. It is like taking care of your
house, no one notices hoN good it looks only how
bad it looks. So1etimes it is drudgery .. just ask
Lisa Mashigian. It is never ending, but it is
totally necessary.Nothing else can get done if this
committee does not do its task. Interested? Uh,huh.
Thought so!Well,if you are please call Christine
who will be glad to show vou around.

Letter to the Centre
Dear Christine:
You were absolutely right when you said, "Ne are
saving wo1yn's lives and sanity,· in last month's
"Honeypot" regarding the i1portance of our phone
line. Today I was at the Centre when not one, but
two womyn needed the services of the LRC. It was
an incredible experience knowing I · was helping
other womyn get the infor1ation and support they
needed when they needed it. I would encourage all
who are able to volunteer their knowledge and
experience to our co11unity to do so. Thanks to
Vicki and Lyn who answered the phone on Sunday, and
Christine, who ans•ers the phone EVERYDAY!

Alternative Visions Offers New Options
by Mendi Phoenix
Three years ago, an idea
was conceived and now that
it has utured, destiny
will see it to beco1e one
of
the
hottest
institutions to hit our
comnity. The young man
to give life to this
concept, Trudi Stinson, is a petite, native born firecracker
who will stop at nothing to ensure that Dallas' first
lesbian/gay video dating service is a reputable option for
mting potential life aates. When asked what aade her
believe she could start a business of this sort, Trudi
responded by proclai1ing a confidence in her abilities to be
persistent, intuitive, and to care deeply about relation•
ships between people. In addition, after spending her
earlier dating years being frustrated by the tunnel visioned
attitudes of cliques, drugs and unsafe sex coupled with the
realization of the risks involved in personal ads, she
decided that there was a void • a need in our comnity and
that she possessed the resources to help fill the void and
nurture the need. In fact, one of these resources, a gift to
perceive hum chnistry, was called upon by her friends who
wanted to mt others with who• they could share their tile,
energy, and interests. These are a few of the foundational
co1ponents integrated into the entity known as Alternative
Visions. As an interested consum, all of your questions
will be addressed during a free consultation which will fa1iliarize you with the staff and services offered. Once a
1e1ber, a 1eeting will be scheduled so that you can co1plete
an interest/permality profile to be housed in a confidential file. Next, an appointmt will be set at your
convenience and at your location of choice so that a
videotape can be created. This will be your ti1e to shine,
so talk about whatever feels co1fortable for you. Incidentally, the videotape will not be ready for viewing until you
are satisfied with the end result. The written profile plus
your personally approved video will be used to aatch you
with four other mbers chosen by the staff, and with your
per- 1ission, offered for private viewing. Alternative
Visions offers its mbers a guarantee of four dates within
six 1onths, or your mbership is extended up to a year.
Disclaim: Ho liability is asmed by Alternative Visions
for the health status of its mbers. This infmation will
be the responsibility of the individual. So, what are you
waiting for? If you're tired of the bar scenes, bored by
the personals and you are ready for a serious relationship,
call Alternative Visions at (214) 823-8392 so you can see
that 'Jove doesn't have to be just a vision in your drms. •

entrapping their victi1s by wearing 'enticing clothes'. The
Police had warned the Gay Comnity several mths ago that
there would be a mpaign to reduce Cri1e in the Parks.
