HERLAND SPRING RETREAT!
A WORD FROM OUR CAMP DIRECTOR
DANCING IN OUR MOMENT
Judy Fjell's performing career began
as a teenager when she picked up a guitar
at a garage sale, learned a few chords, and
began entertaining folks in her small
Montana home town with favorites
from the "Hootenanny!" radio program. She majored in art at St. Olaf
College in Minnesota and later became
an elementary music teacher, but she
spent much of her spare time learning
fingerpicking techniques and performing with friends at local coffeehouses.
Judy's career took a new turn when
she came into her own as a songwriter in
Oregon in the mid-'70's. Demand for
her original music led to the creation of
Honey Pie Music, the label which has
released four Judy Fjell recordings to
date. As she began to tour in the Northwest, audiences responded immediately
to her unforgettable songs, her clear
voice, her vibrant 12-string guitar playing, her quick wit, and her warm,
"down-home" style.
Judy's touring continued to expand in
Herland presents the 4th Annual Spring Retreat for Wimmin May 19-21,
1989 at Boiling Springs State Park. I feel this retreat will prove our
commitment to making each one better than the last.
This year's performer is Judy Fjell, musician, humorist and presentor. She
has been described as "the woman who's therapist reassures her that 14
personalities are better than none at all."
Judy will also present a workshop titled "Music Empowerment" on
Saturday morning. Other workshops available will be "Stress Management"
(I'll probably see you there); "Spirituality and Sexuality," by Beau McDan;iels;
and ''Adult Children of Alcoholics.'' More workshops are being schedul~ct 1 as
the newsletter goes to press.
Massages will be available from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, arid 9 a.m. - noon
on Sunday in a private room in the main building. Costs will be: $30, full
body; $18, body; $10 neck. Portions of all proceeds from all booths will go to
Herland.
An orienteering race will be held on Saturday morning. this is a fun way to
enjoy a nature walk and have a chance to win prizes.
A button-making booth will also be available. Bring ideas or photos and $1.
All proceeds benefit Herland.
Meals will once again be available at the retreat at a price ot determined later.
Boiling Springs offers hiking trails where you might meet a few peer or wild
/
turkeys. Alabaster Caverns is just 16 miles away.
Send in your registrations with ideas and comments. I plan on another
wonderful weekend for all.
Pre-registratio~ is $17-$20 and on-site is $25. Scholarships are in limited
supply. If you can offer to pay a scholarship, it would be of great help to those
who can share the fun yet cannot afford it. If you have any questions, give me a
call at 672-4141. See you there!
Laura
the '80's to include California and all of
the northwestern states. In 1985 she was
asked to showcase the National Women's Music Festival in Bloomington,
Indiana, and to emcee that stage in 1987.
Popular demand has brought her to the
mainstage of the West Coast Women's
Music and Comedy Festival and continues to be the basis for Judy's rise as a
performing artist. Wherever she appears,
audiences are captivated by her excellence as a musician, and disarmed by the
way she brings humor and heart to even
the most difficult of subjects.
June, 1988, marked the release of a new
Judy Fjell album, "DANCE IN THE
MOMENT," and plans for tours in the
United States, Canada, and Australia. In
addition to concerts for adults, Judy
teaches music empowerment workshops
and presents concerts for "children and
other playful people." She has developed a multi-media, multi-sensory show
with her puppet GRIN entitled "NO
ONE WAY TO SEE THINGS." As with
all of her musical appearances, there is
plenty of opportunity for audience members of all ages to sing along and to
experience the spontaneity of this multifaceted performer-Judy Fjell!

Capturing the social diversity of Jexas
communities, Sunday presento~ and

Meet the Board
MEET SISTER 50!
By _Sondra Metzger
This month's board member is Margaret C., who calls herself "Sister 50"
because she just turned 50 years old last
year.
_ Marg_aret has. been an integral part of
Herland since 1985 when Barbara Cleveland convinced her to join the board.
Being involved with a volunteer organization is nothing new to Margaret. She is
the most politically active member of
the board, and has been very active with
the National Organization for Women
for seven years.
"My father was career Army, and I
was 'born at Ft. Sill,'' she said. "An
Army family life is very patriarchal, and
when I found out at the age of 10 that I
couldn't go to West Point, I decided to
buy into that type of family life. For the
next 20 years I tried to be a model of
what the traditional woman was
thought to be."
Margaret began working for women's
rights at the end of those 20 years and
while doing so discovered she was crazy
about women.
"I'm philosophically bi-sexual,'' she
said, "politically radical lesbian and
specifically, I'm straight."
Margaret is presently the entire staff
of what she calls one of the state's
smallest agencies. She spends her time in
her house in OKC with two dogs and a
cat when she's not working for NOW or
Her land.
"One of my first impressions of
Herland,'' she said, "was that they
would talk about something at the board
meeting and then I would see it done. I
don't think Herland has a reputation
among the sisters for getting things done
or following things through, but it was
better than NOW or any other organization at that time. The women are the best
thing about Herland. They're fun, dedicated, hard-working, competent and
very daring."
Like all of us, Margaret has her dreams
for Herland. She would like to see
Herland be the core of a real women's
resource center that has offices available
for women lawyers, a health practitioner
and a psychologist.
"I'd like to see us buy the church
building next door, she said. "I'd also
like to see NOW and the Women's
Political Caucus share office space and
rent the back room each month. I'd also
love to see someone staffing the store
seven days a week."
Margaret knows quite a bit about
staffing the store. As head of the Volunteer Committee, it is up to her to make
sure someone is there to work on the
weekends, which is sometimes not easy.
Margaret enjoys a wonderful relationship with her 20-year-old daughter,
Malika, who lives in Washington, D.C.
"She's named after Malcolm X,'' she
said. "Her father and I thought it was a
beautiful name, and we were quite
radical at the time. We're divorced now,
but we're still good friends. I feel very,
very lucky to have the relationship I do
with my daughter. She's really a great
kid."
Margaret had one word of advice for
those who haven't become involved
with Herland: "Working for the volunteer committee is the best way to meet
women!"

As some have noticed, B.G. Canis's
article in the April issue of the HSR

be out when you infiltrate. Being out is a
personal decision and no one has any right

My apologies to B.G. for this pasteup goof.

HERLAND SPRING RETREAT!
A WORD FROM OUR CAMP DIRECTOR
DANCING IN OUR MOMENT
Judy Fjell's performing career began
as a teenager when she picked up a guitar
at a garage sale, learned a few chords, and
began entertaining folks in her small
Montana home town with favorites
from the "Hootenanny!" radio program. She majored in art at St. Olaf
College in Minnesota and later became
an elementary music teacher, but she
spent much of her spare time learning
fingerpicking techniques and performing with friends at local coffeehouses.
Judy's career took a new turn when
she came into her own as a songwriter in
Oregon in the mid-'70's. Demand for
her original music led to the creation of
Honey Pie Music, the label which has
released four Judy Fjell recordings to
date. As she began to tour in the Northwest, audiences responded immediately
to her unforgettable songs, her clear
voice, her vibrant 12-string guitar playing, her quick wit, and her warm,
"down-home" style.
Judy's touring continued to expand in
Herland presents the 4th Annual Spring Retreat for Wimmin May 19-21,
1989 at Boiling Springs State Park. I feel this retreat will prove our
commitment to making each one better than the last.
This year's performer is Judy Fjell, musician, humorist and presentor. She
has been described as "the woman who's therapist reassures her that 14
personalities are better than none at all."
Judy will also present a workshop titled "Music Empowerment" on
Saturday morning. Other workshops available will be "Stress Management"
(I'll probably see you there); "Spirituality and Sexuality," by Beau McDan;iels;
and ''Adult Children of Alcoholics.'' More workshops are being schedul~ct 1 as
the newsletter goes to press.

Meet the Board
MEET SISTER 50!
By _Sondra Metzger
This month's board member is Margaret C., who calls herself "Sister 50"
because she just turned 50 years old last
year.
_ Marg_aret has. been an integral part of
Herland since 1985 when Barbara Cleveland convinced her to join the board.
Being involved with a volunteer organization is nothing new to Margaret. She is
the most politically active member of
the board, and has been very active with
the National Organization for Women
for seven years.
"My father was career Army, and I
was 'born at Ft. Sill,'' she said. "An
Army family life is very patriarchal, and
when I found out at the age of 10 that I
couldn't go to West Point, I decided to
buy into that type of family life. For the
next 20 years I tried to be a model of
what the traditional woman was
thought to be."
Margaret began working for women's
rights at the end of those 20 years and
while doing so discovered she was crazy
about women.
"I'm philosophically bi-sexual,'' she
said, "politically radical lesbian and
specifically, I'm straight."
Margaret is presently the entire staff
of what she calls one of the state's
smallest agencies. She spends her time in
her house in OKC with two dogs and a
cat when she's not working for NOW or
Her land.
"One of my first impressions of
Herland,'' she said, "was that they
would talk about something at the board
meeting and then I would see it done. I
don't think Herland has a reputation
among the sisters for getting things done
or following things through, but it was
better than NOW or any other organization at that time. The women are the best
thing about Herland. They're fun, dedicated, hard-working, competent and
very daring."
Like all of us, Margaret has her dreams
for Herland. She would like to see
Herland be the core of a real women's
resource center that has offices available
for women lawyers, a health practitioner
and a psychologist.
"I'd like to see us buy the church
building next door, she said. "I'd also
like to see NOW and the Women's
Political Caucus share office space and
rent the back room each month. I'd also
love to see someone staffing the store
seven days a week."
Margaret knows quite a bit about
staffing the store. As head of the Volunteer Committee, it is up to her to make
sure someone is there to work on the
weekends, which is sometimes not easy.
Margaret enjoys a wonderful relationship with her 20-year-old daughter,
Malika, who lives in Washington, D.C.
"She's named after Malcolm X,'' she
said. "Her father and I thought it was a
beautiful name, and we were quite
radical at the time. We're divorced now,
but we're still good friends. I feel very,
very lucky to have the relationship I do
with my daughter. She's really a great
kid."
Margaret had one word of advice for
those who haven't become involved
with Herland: "Working for the volunteer committee is the best way to meet
women!"

Oops-The Editor Goofs Again!
As some have noticed, B.G. Canis's
article in the April issue of the HSR
Newsletter is missing something. Page

be out when you infiltrate. Being out is a
personal decision and no one has any right
to interfere with your personal life."
My apologies to B.G. for this pasteup goof.

HERLAND SPRING RETREAT!
A WORD FROM OUR CAMP DIRECTOR
DANCING IN OUR MOMENT
Judy Fjell's performing career began
as a teenager when she picked up a guitar
at a garage sale, learned a few chords, and
began entertaining folks in her small
Montana home town with favorites
from the "Hootenanny!" radio program. She majored in art at St. Olaf
College in Minnesota and later became
an elementary music teacher, but she
spent much of her spare time learning
fingerpicking techniques and performing with friends at local coffeehouses.
Judy's career took a new turn when
she came into her own as a songwriter in
Oregon in the mid-'70's. Demand for
her original music led to the creation of
Honey Pie Music, the label which has
released four Judy Fjell recordings to
date. As she began to tour in the Northwest, audiences responded immediately
to her unforgettable songs, her clear
voice, her vibrant 12-string guitar playing, her quick wit, and her warm,
"down-home" style.
Judy's touring continued to expand in
Herland presents the 4th Annual Spring Retreat for Wimmin May 19-21,
1989 at Boiling Springs State Park. I feel this retreat will prove our
commitment to making each one better than the last.
This year's performer is Judy Fjell, musician, humorist and presentor. She
has been described as "the woman who's therapist reassures her that 14
personalities are better than none at all."
Judy will also present a workshop titled "Music Empowerment" on
Saturday morning. Other workshops available will be "Stress Management"
(I'll probably see you there); "Spirituality and Sexuality," by Beau McDan;iels;
and ''Adult Children of Alcoholics.'' More workshops are being schedul~ct 1 as
the newsletter goes to press.

Meet the Board
MEET SISTER 50!
By _Sondra Metzger
This month's board member is Margaret C., who calls herself "Sister 50"
because she just turned 50 years old last
year.
_ Marg_aret has. been an integral part of
Herland since 1985 when Barbara Cleveland convinced her to join the board.
Being involved with a volunteer organization is nothing new to Margaret. She is
the most politically active member of
the board, and has been very active with
the National Organization for Women
for seven years.
"My father was career Army, and I
was 'born at Ft. Sill,'' she said. "An
Army family life is very patriarchal, and
when I found out at the age of 10 that I
couldn't go to West Point, I decided to
buy into that type of family life. For the
next 20 years I tried to be a model of
what the traditional woman was
thought to be."
Margaret began working for women's
rights at the end of those 20 years and
while doing so discovered she was crazy
about women.
"I'm philosophically bi-sexual,'' she
said, "politically radical lesbian and
specifically, I'm straight."
Margaret is presently the entire staff
of what she calls one of the state's
smallest agencies. She spends her time in
her house in OKC with two dogs and a
cat when she's not working for NOW or
Her land.
"One of my first impressions of
Herland,'' she said, "was that they
would talk about something at the board
meeting and then I would see it done. I
don't think Herland has a reputation
among the sisters for getting things done
or following things through, but it was
better than NOW or any other organization at that time. The women are the best
thing about Herland. They're fun, dedicated, hard-working, competent and
very daring."
Like all of us, Margaret has her dreams
for Herland. She would like to see
Herland be the core of a real women's
resource center that has offices available
for women lawyers, a health practitioner
and a psychologist.
"I'd like to see us buy the church
building next door, she said. "I'd also
like to see NOW and the Women's
Political Caucus share office space and
rent the back room each month. I'd also
love to see someone staffing the store
seven days a week."
Margaret knows quite a bit about
staffing the store. As head of the Volunteer Committee, it is up to her to make
sure someone is there to work on the
weekends, which is sometimes not easy.
Margaret enjoys a wonderful relationship with her 20-year-old daughter,
Malika, who lives in Washington, D.C.
"She's named after Malcolm X,'' she
said. "Her father and I thought it was a
beautiful name, and we were quite
radical at the time. We're divorced now,
but we're still good friends. I feel very,
very lucky to have the relationship I do
with my daughter. She's really a great
kid."
Margaret had one word of advice for
those who haven't become involved
with Herland: "Working for the volunteer committee is the best way to meet
women!"

Oops-The Editor Goofs Again!
As some have noticed, B.G. Canis's
article in the April issue of the HSR
Newsletter is missing something. Page
6, Column 3, 3rd line should read: "I'm
not condoning 'sneakiness.' If you're 'out'
be out when you infiltrate. Being out is a
personal decision and no one has any right
to interfere with your personal life."
My apologies to B.G. for this pasteup goof.

HERLAND SPRING RETREAT!
A WORD FROM OUR CAMP DIRECTOR
DANCING IN OUR MOMENT
Judy Fjell's performing career began
as a teenager when she picked up a guitar
at a garage sale, learned a few chords, and
began entertaining folks in her small
Montana home town with favorites
from the "Hootenanny!" radio program. She majored in art at St. Olaf
College in Minnesota and later became
an elementary music teacher, but she
spent much of her spare time learning
fingerpicking techniques and performing with friends at local coffeehouses.
Judy's career took a new turn when
she came into her own as a songwriter in
Oregon in the mid-'70's. Demand for
her original music led to the creation of
Honey Pie Music, the label which has
released four Judy Fjell recordings to
date. As she began to tour in the Northwest, audiences responded immediately
to her unforgettable songs, her clear
voice, her vibrant 12-string guitar playing, her quick wit, and her warm,
"down-home" style.
Judy's touring continued to expand in
Herland presents the 4th Annual Spring Retreat for Wimmin May 19-21,
1989 at Boiling Springs State Park. I feel this retreat will prove our
commitment to making each one better than the last.
This year's performer is Judy Fjell, musician, humorist and presentor. She
has been described as "the woman who's therapist reassures her that 14
personalities are better than none at all."
Judy will also present a workshop titled "Music Empowerment" on
Saturday morning. Other workshops available will be "Stress Management"
(I'll probably see you there); "Spirituality and Sexuality," by Beau McDan;iels;
and ''Adult Children of Alcoholics.'' More workshops are being schedul~ct 1 as
the newsletter goes to press.

Two native Texas lesbians will keynote the event and over 1000 women are

Meet the Board
MEET SISTER 50!
By _Sondra Metzger
This month's board member is Margaret C., who calls herself "Sister 50"
because she just turned 50 years old last
year.
_ Marg_aret has. been an integral part of
Herland since 1985 when Barbara Cleveland convinced her to join the board.
Being involved with a volunteer organization is nothing new to Margaret. She is
the most politically active member of
the board, and has been very active with
the National Organization for Women
for seven years.
"My father was career Army, and I
was 'born at Ft. Sill,'' she said. "An
Army family life is very patriarchal, and
when I found out at the age of 10 that I
couldn't go to West Point, I decided to
buy into that type of family life. For the
next 20 years I tried to be a model of
what the traditional woman was
thought to be."
Margaret began working for women's
rights at the end of those 20 years and
while doing so discovered she was crazy
about women.
"I'm philosophically bi-sexual,'' she
said, "politically radical lesbian and
specifically, I'm straight."
Margaret is presently the entire staff
of what she calls one of the state's
smallest agencies. She spends her time in
her house in OKC with two dogs and a
cat when she's not working for NOW or
Her land.
"One of my first impressions of
Herland,'' she said, "was that they
would talk about something at the board
meeting and then I would see it done. I
don't think Herland has a reputation
among the sisters for getting things done
or following things through, but it was
better than NOW or any other organization at that time. The women are the best
thing about Herland. They're fun, dedicated, hard-working, competent and
very daring."
Like all of us, Margaret has her dreams
for Herland. She would like to see
Herland be the core of a real women's
resource center that has offices available
for women lawyers, a health practitioner
and a psychologist.
"I'd like to see us buy the church
building next door, she said. "I'd also
like to see NOW and the Women's
Political Caucus share office space and
rent the back room each month. I'd also
love to see someone staffing the store
seven days a week."
Margaret knows quite a bit about
staffing the store. As head of the Volunteer Committee, it is up to her to make
sure someone is there to work on the
weekends, which is sometimes not easy.
Margaret enjoys a wonderful relationship with her 20-year-old daughter,
Malika, who lives in Washington, D.C.
"She's named after Malcolm X,'' she
said. "Her father and I thought it was a
beautiful name, and we were quite
radical at the time. We're divorced now,
but we're still good friends. I feel very,
very lucky to have the relationship I do
with my daughter. She's really a great
kid."
Margaret had one word of advice for
those who haven't become involved
with Herland: "Working for the volunteer committee is the best way to meet
women!"

As some have noticed, B.G. Canis's
article in the April issue of the HSR
Newsletter is missing something. Page

be out when you infiltrate. Being out is a
personal decision and no one has any right
to interfere with your personal life."
My apologies to B.G. for this pasteup goof.

HERLAND SPRING RETREAT!
A WORD FROM OUR CAMP DIRECTOR
DANCING IN OUR MOMENT
Judy Fjell's performing career began
as a teenager when she picked up a guitar
at a garage sale, learned a few chords, and
began entertaining folks in her small
Montana home town with favorites
from the "Hootenanny!" radio program. She majored in art at St. Olaf
College in Minnesota and later became
an elementary music teacher, but she
spent much of her spare time learning
fingerpicking techniques and performing with friends at local coffeehouses.
Judy's career took a new turn when
she came into her own as a songwriter in
Oregon in the mid-'70's. Demand for
her original music led to the creation of
Honey Pie Music, the label which has
released four Judy Fjell recordings to
date. As she began to tour in the Northwest, audiences responded immediately
to her unforgettable songs, her clear
voice, her vibrant 12-string guitar playing, her quick wit, and her warm,
"down-home" style.
Judy's touring continued to expand in
Herland presents the 4th Annual Spring Retreat for Wimmin May 19-21,
1989 at Boiling Springs State Park. I feel this retreat will prove our
commitment to making each one better than the last.
This year's performer is Judy Fjell, musician, humorist and presentor. She
has been described as "the woman who's therapist reassures her that 14
personalities are better than none at all."
Judy will also present a workshop titled "Music Empowerment" on
Saturday morning. Other workshops available will be "Stress Management"
(I'll probably see you there); "Spirituality and Sexuality," by Beau McDan;iels;
and ''Adult Children of Alcoholics.'' More workshops are being schedul~ct 1 as
the newsletter goes to press.

Meet the Board
MEET SISTER 50!
By _Sondra Metzger
This month's board member is Margaret C., who calls herself "Sister 50"
because she just turned 50 years old last
year.
_ Marg_aret has. been an integral part of
Herland since 1985 when Barbara Cleveland convinced her to join the board.
Being involved with a volunteer organization is nothing new to Margaret. She is
the most politically active member of
the board, and has been very active with
the National Organization for Women
for seven years.
"My father was career Army, and I
was 'born at Ft. Sill,'' she said. "An
Army family life is very patriarchal, and
when I found out at the age of 10 that I
couldn't go to West Point, I decided to
buy into that type of family life. For the
next 20 years I tried to be a model of
what the traditional woman was
thought to be."
Margaret began working for women's
rights at the end of those 20 years and
while doing so discovered she was crazy
about women.
"I'm philosophically bi-sexual,'' she
said, "politically radical lesbian and
specifically, I'm straight."
Margaret is presently the entire staff
of what she calls one of the state's
smallest agencies. She spends her time in
her house in OKC with two dogs and a
cat when she's not working for NOW or
Her land.
"One of my first impressions of
Herland,'' she said, "was that they
would talk about something at the board
meeting and then I would see it done. I
don't think Herland has a reputation
among the sisters for getting things done
or following things through, but it was
better than NOW or any other organization at that time. The women are the best
thing about Herland. They're fun, dedicated, hard-working, competent and
very daring."
Like all of us, Margaret has her dreams
for Herland. She would like to see
Herland be the core of a real women's
resource center that has offices available
for women lawyers, a health practitioner
and a psychologist.
"I'd like to see us buy the church
building next door, she said. "I'd also
like to see NOW and the Women's
Political Caucus share office space and
rent the back room each month. I'd also
love to see someone staffing the store
seven days a week."
Margaret knows quite a bit about
staffing the store. As head of the Volunteer Committee, it is up to her to make
sure someone is there to work on the
weekends, which is sometimes not easy.
Margaret enjoys a wonderful relationship with her 20-year-old daughter,
Malika, who lives in Washington, D.C.
"She's named after Malcolm X,'' she
said. "Her father and I thought it was a
beautiful name, and we were quite
radical at the time. We're divorced now,
but we're still good friends. I feel very,
very lucky to have the relationship I do
with my daughter. She's really a great
kid."
Margaret had one word of advice for
those who haven't become involved
with Herland: "Working for the volunteer committee is the best way to meet
women!"

As some have noticed, B.G. Canis's
article in the April issue of the HSR

not condoning 'sneakiness.' If you're 'out'
be out when you infiltrate. Being out is a
personal decision and no one has any right
to interfere with your personal life."
My apologies to B.G. for this pasteup goof.
