into effect in September. Maxey em
phasized to members of the LGRL

The story of Nikki and how she came to be.
AS TOLD TO TASHA SUMMER
J
We sit down in the living room among o sec oftoys. Nikki isfascinated with
the buttons on my tope recorder. She giggies and gurgles as she plays
with the buttons and puils on the cord.
Nikki is the secondary subject of this article. She is a beautifui nine month-
old girl with brown hair and the biggest biue eyes you've ever seen. The
real subject here is how Nikki came to be. Her mother, Cindy, was
artificially inseminated, and she is going to tell you (in her own words)
what that entails.

LEGISLATIVE
UPDATE
An Overview of the Recent Session
OF the Texas Legislature
BY Laurie Eiserloh
Lobbyist for the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas
On May 27lh at midnight, the 72nd
session of the Texas Legislature ended.
This has been a victorious session for
the Lesbian and Gay community. We
defeated house bill 2509,sponsored by
Rep. demons(D-Pollock),that would
have criminalized persons living with
HIV infection and undercut all of our
past policy successes. We defeated
house bill 2448, sponsored by Rep.
Carona(R-Dallas),andHouseBill 1362,
patients, which in turn, would have led
to a shortage of doctors to treat those
living with HIV. This bill would have
also opened the door for other oppres
sive legislation and more mandatory
testing.
The defeat of House Bill(HB)702 was
a big task, and we, as a community,
must congratulate ourselves for our or
ganization,political acumen and perse
verance. Consider what we had against

Both ofthese bills dealt with mandatory

odds were definitely against us.
Fortunately, Lieutenant Governor Bob
Bullock supported us in our battle
against HB702.Even when the bill was
on the intentcalendar, ready to be called.
Lieutenant Governor BobB ullock stood
steadfastly by, in the face of tremen
dous political pressure, and supported
our community by refusing to call the
bill for a hearing on the senate floor.
Something that we must understand as
acommunity is that thesupportofsome
one like Bob Bullock does not exist in
a political vacuum. All of you who
worked in his campaign,educated him
about lesbian and gay issues and who
donated money to his campaign de
serve thanks. When the passage of HB
702seemed almostinevitable,the phone
calls and telegrams of those who had
worked so hard in the Bullock cam
paign really paid off.
As for the good bills that the LGRL
introduced, we are disappointed that
none ofthem passed. It has always been
that we will have several new support
ers of gay and lesbian issues in the
Texas House.
The Texas Legislature meets every two
years, however,the Governor plans to
call several special sessions in the in
terim.The first ofthese special sessions
will be in July to discuss the state bud
get. Our issue in this first special ses
sion will be funding for high risk insur
ance pools benefitting persons living
with HIV.Also,1 plan to push for a state
resolution asking the Center for Dis
ease Control to redefine AIDS so that
women, who have different opportun
istic infections than men, will receive
the same benefits that men receive.
Again,1 would like to congratulate the
gay and lesbian community for a job
well done. All of you who worked so
hard for the Richards and/or the Bul
lock campaign — your time, your
money and mostimportantly,your vote
really paid off this session.

If you would like to thank Lieutenant

Governor Bob Bullock for his support,

because of a conservative backlash
caused by the election of Ann Richards,
Bob Bullock and Rep. Glen Maxey.

be elected to the Texas Legislature.)
We may see some changes next ses

WOMAN TO WOMAN
Soft,feminine voice,
o sultry sound,
coliing me night after nightbeguiling,sensuous,
convincing my ionliness,
maybe it is ail right.
Sweet old fashioned love notes
every day in the mail,
the fragrance of Shoiimar,
drawing me closer
and closer to hear
the strum of her strange guitar.
Filling my dreams,
driving me almost insane,
provocative, whispering,"Darling, don't fight,*

Oh,how she wooed me,

Though she begged me, i never replied,
it took oil the power

into effect in September. Maxey em

The story of Nikki and how she came to be.
AS TOLD TO TASHA SUMMER

We sit down in the living room among o sec oftoys. Nikki isfascinated with

with the buttons and puils on the cord.
Nikki is the secondary subject of this article. She is a beautifui nine month-
old girl with brown hair and the biggest biue eyes you've ever seen. The
real subject here is how Nikki came to be. Her mother, Cindy, was
artificially inseminated, and she is going to tell you (in her own words)
what that entails.

LEGISLATIVE
UPDATE
An Overview of the Recent Session
OF the Texas Legislature
BY Laurie Eiserloh
Lobbyist for the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas
On May 27lh at midnight, the 72nd
session of the Texas Legislature ended.
This has been a victorious session for
the Lesbian and Gay community. We
defeated house bill 2509,sponsored by
Rep. demons(D-Pollock),that would
have criminalized persons living with
HIV infection and undercut all of our
past policy successes. We defeated
house bill 2448, sponsored by Rep.
Carona(R-Dallas),andHouseBill 1362,
patients, which in turn, would have led
to a shortage of doctors to treat those
living with HIV. This bill would have
also opened the door for other oppres
sive legislation and more mandatory
testing.
The defeat of House Bill(HB)702 was
a big task, and we, as a community,
must congratulate ourselves for our or
ganization,political acumen and perse
verance. Consider what we had against

odds were definitely against us.
Fortunately, Lieutenant Governor Bob
Bullock supported us in our battle
against HB702.Even when the bill was
on the intentcalendar, ready to be called.
Lieutenant Governor BobB ullock stood
steadfastly by, in the face of tremen
dous political pressure, and supported
our community by refusing to call the
bill for a hearing on the senate floor.
Something that we must understand as
acommunity is that thesupportofsome
one like Bob Bullock does not exist in
a political vacuum. All of you who
worked in his campaign,educated him
about lesbian and gay issues and who
donated money to his campaign de
serve thanks. When the passage of HB
702seemed almostinevitable,the phone
calls and telegrams of those who had
worked so hard in the Bullock cam
paign really paid off.
As for the good bills that the LGRL
introduced, we are disappointed that
none ofthem passed. It has always been
that we will have several new support
ers of gay and lesbian issues in the
Texas House.
The Texas Legislature meets every two
years, however,the Governor plans to
call several special sessions in the in
terim.The first ofthese special sessions
will be in July to discuss the state bud
get. Our issue in this first special ses
sion will be funding for high risk insur
ance pools benefitting persons living
with HIV.Also,1 plan to push for a state
resolution asking the Center for Dis
ease Control to redefine AIDS so that
women, who have different opportun
istic infections than men, will receive
the same benefits that men receive.
Again,1 would like to congratulate the
gay and lesbian community for a job
well done. All of you who worked so
hard for the Richards and/or the Bul
lock campaign — your time, your
money and mostimportantly,your vote
really paid off this session.

If you would like to thank Lieutenant

Governor Bob Bullock for his support,

because of a conservative backlash
caused by the election of Ann Richards,

be elected to the Texas Legislature.)
We may see some changes next ses

Soft,feminine voice,

Sweet old fashioned love notes
every day in the mail,
the fragrance of Shoiimar,
drawing me closer
and closer to hear
the strum of her strange guitar.
Filling my dreams,
driving me almost insane,
provocative, whispering,"Darling, don't fight,*

into effect in September. Maxey em

The story of Nikki and how she came to be.
AS TOLD TO TASHA SUMMER

We sit down in the living room among o sec oftoys. Nikki isfascinated with

with the buttons and puils on the cord.
Nikki is the secondary subject of this article. She is a beautifui nine month-
old girl with brown hair and the biggest biue eyes you've ever seen. The
real subject here is how Nikki came to be. Her mother, Cindy, was
artificially inseminated, and she is going to tell you (in her own words)
what that entails.

LEGISLATIVE
UPDATE
An Overview of the Recent Session
OF the Texas Legislature
BY Laurie Eiserloh
Lobbyist for the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas
On May 27lh at midnight, the 72nd
session of the Texas Legislature ended.
This has been a victorious session for
the Lesbian and Gay community. We
defeated house bill 2509,sponsored by
Rep. demons(D-Pollock),that would
have criminalized persons living with
HIV infection and undercut all of our
past policy successes. We defeated
house bill 2448, sponsored by Rep.
Carona(R-Dallas),andHouseBill 1362,
patients, which in turn, would have led
to a shortage of doctors to treat those
living with HIV. This bill would have
also opened the door for other oppres
sive legislation and more mandatory
testing.
The defeat of House Bill(HB)702 was
a big task, and we, as a community,
must congratulate ourselves for our or
ganization,political acumen and perse
verance. Consider what we had against

odds were definitely against us.
Fortunately, Lieutenant Governor Bob
Bullock supported us in our battle
against HB702.Even when the bill was
on the intentcalendar, ready to be called.
Lieutenant Governor BobB ullock stood
steadfastly by, in the face of tremen
dous political pressure, and supported
our community by refusing to call the
bill for a hearing on the senate floor.
Something that we must understand as
acommunity is that thesupportofsome
one like Bob Bullock does not exist in
a political vacuum. All of you who
worked in his campaign,educated him
about lesbian and gay issues and who
donated money to his campaign de
serve thanks. When the passage of HB
702seemed almostinevitable,the phone
calls and telegrams of those who had
worked so hard in the Bullock cam
paign really paid off.
As for the good bills that the LGRL
introduced, we are disappointed that
none ofthem passed. It has always been
that we will have several new support
ers of gay and lesbian issues in the
Texas House.
The Texas Legislature meets every two
years, however,the Governor plans to
call several special sessions in the in
terim.The first ofthese special sessions
will be in July to discuss the state bud
get. Our issue in this first special ses
sion will be funding for high risk insur
ance pools benefitting persons living
with HIV.Also,1 plan to push for a state
resolution asking the Center for Dis
ease Control to redefine AIDS so that
women, who have different opportun
istic infections than men, will receive
the same benefits that men receive.
Again,1 would like to congratulate the
gay and lesbian community for a job
well done. All of you who worked so
hard for the Richards and/or the Bul
lock campaign — your time, your
money and mostimportantly,your vote
really paid off this session.

If you would like to thank Lieutenant

Governor Bob Bullock for his support,

because of a conservative backlash
caused by the election of Ann Richards,

be elected to the Texas Legislature.)
We may see some changes next ses
