HSR FALL RETREAT
Imagine .. . a fall weekend in a secluded wooded
campground filled with women. Whether you are the
flannel shirt type, the sweater type or sweatshirt type,
the Herland Fall Retreat offers the perfect opportunity
to don those long sleeves and enjoy a great weekend.
The Herland Retreat will be November 1-3 at
Fountainhead State Park. Highlights include an arts
and crafts festival and a concert by Circle of Friends.
Other events will be a scavenger hunt, open mike, the
Saturday evening potluck supper, and Friday and Saturday night campfires. Workshop time and
space is available if you want to lead
a workshop or facilitate a discussion. Call Herland to let us know
you'd like to lead a workshop or
sign up for a time when you
arrive at the retreat.
The arts and crafts produced by women will be on
display (and for sale) throughout the retreat. If you
would like to bring items, just let us know. Anyone
registered for the retreat is welcome to bring items with
no additional fee. Tables are limited so bring your own
if you can.
The open mike gives everyone --musicians, comedians, poets.. .. -- an opportunity to perform. It's
always a treat with a mixture of seasoned performers
and those just starting out.
Lake Eufaula is nearby and the campground includes a small lake so bring your fishing gear.
Registration includes lodging for Friday and Saturday night in a group cabin, late-night supper Friday,
and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Limited RV
hookups are available on a first-come first-serve basis
and tenting is available on the retreat grounds.
Registration information is inside this issue of the
Voice. Preregistration is on a sliding scale from $15 to
$60. On-site registration will be $70 .0

HISTORY MONTH
I've learned since last month that UCO will be presenting the play Angels in America from October 25th through
November 3. They put on several performances of the first
part of the play, Millenium Approaches, in the spring, and
not only are they showing the 2nd part this time, they are
also going to be perfonning the first part again, according
to the advertisements I've seen. Perestroika is the title of the
second part ofthis Pulitzer Prize-winning play so don't miss
either part if you haven't seen it yet.
Aiigels in America deals with AIDS, politics and
relationships and will move you and make you laugh and cry
at the same time. From what I've heard, it was not easy for
the theater director to get approval to present this play. It
has graphic language, and deals with homosexuality and
AIDS (gasp!) Pretty heady stuff for a small university in
conservative Oklahoma. Let them know it's worth it by
your support! The more we support things like this, the
more they'll be available.
lfyou'rea tennis fan (or even if you're not), don't miss
the Virginia Slims Legends tour coming through Oklahoma
City again October 5th and 6th.
If you're a travelin' fool, Carrie Newcomer will be at
Uncle Calvin's coffeehouse in early November, the 15th.
Carrie has one of the most gorgeous voices in the world and
is a very talented songwriter as well. She'll be perfonning
with her band so I' e uessing it will be a fairly rockin'
show.
And finally, a plug for Herland. I'm not on the board
but I do have a strong interest in seeing Herland survive. I
try to imagine what it would be like without the newsletter,
retreats, and events that Herland sponsors and I don't like
it at all. But, we can't take any of these things for granted
or we'll lose them. Please support Herland financially as
well as getting involved in keeping her alive and well. Do
what you can. Every little bit helps.a
