TANYA SAVORY- TOWN TO
TOWN
by Ji/I Gamer
In honorof Tanya Savory's second visitto the Blue Door
on June 1Qth,I' d like to tell you a little bit about her music. The
first time! heard her at the Blue Door, I had no idea who she
was, or so I thought. It turns out I had one of her songs on
a Rounder Records collection, and it was my favorite song on
the CD! Talk about an interesting surprise. But, I was
already hooked before she even sang that song.
There's a whole lot of music that' s not easily categorized
and Savory's music is no exception. Contemporary folk with
some bluegrass and country influences is probably about the
best I can do. Her voice initially draws you in and then her
words begin to seep into your consciousness and it's easy to
get pulled into every song and see yourself or someone you
know, or just be able to place yourself wherever she takes
you. She writes about people, places and things in an
imaginative way and takes you away like a good book does,
to that town that's now gone, riding dmvn the highway, in
your grandmother' s house as a little kid.
"When the River Rose" is the strength of the CD . She
writes from the perspective of a farmer who has lost
everything when the Mississippi river flooded a few years
ago. "And the cars and the roads and the rooftops all sail,
southward along with the very last hope a.11ybody knows, and
it seems like all the prayers we said on Sunday, well they sure
didn't count for much when the river rose." The song is a
brisk, peppy song but the devastation of the floods on
people's lives and everything in them is captured clearly.
"Big Town" is another one of my favorites. It has some
similarity to Iris Dement's "Our Town," but this one doesn't
make you break down and cry. But it's still a very touching
song about her grandmother' s hometown in Kansas that's
now gone. " She laughed and shook her head and said, 'sure
is a funny one how the years, well they can turn one town into
a bright shiny city, or turn the other way and let another
disappear." When introducing this song at her show, she
recalled telling her grandmother a highway now goes all the
way through Kansas and you can drive across the whole
state. Her grandmother replied, "Why would anyone want
to?"
"Reason Enough" is the bluegrass song on the album and
is a toe-tapping end of the relationship song. Kristin Scott
plays a good banjo and Wanda Vick, who plays various
instruments throughout the album, plays the mandolin and
fiddle. "And oh, don't the north wind blow, just a little bit
colder because, if you' re thinking ofleaving and needing a
reason, that' s reason enough." Bluegrass artist Dale Bradley
covered this song on her last CD . It apparently climbed the
Page 2 Herlmrd Voice June, 2000
bluegrass chart for Bradley but as Savory playfully asked at
her show, "Has anyone ever actually seen this bluegrass
chart?"
Whether writing about being homesick ("Bluegrass"),
the highway ("40, 80, or 1O"), or the old man who lives bn the
outskirts ofNashville ("Reuben Brown"), Savory has a way
of telling each story vividly without weighing it down by
saying too much. Savory has won some songwriting awards
over the past few years with good reason.
I think the CDs biggest weakness is some overkill on the
sentimentality, particularly on "I Don't Hear That Train" and
"Different Shores." But it doesn't get in the way of my love
of this CD. I highly recommend it, particularly if you like
really good descriptive songs written very simply, which
takes a lot of skill to do.
I'd also recommend Savory' s show June 10th. Besides
her talent, she's very funny and Kim House on the piano and
harmony vocals adds immensely to the show. Hope to see
you there and you'll be able to buy her CDs at the show.l:l

If you love fresh air, great company, lovely scenery and
bicycling, we have an event for you! Herland Sister Resources sponsors a monthly, Sunday-morning (spiritual) bike
ride averaging 10 miles at different locations around Oklahoma County.
Then after a couple of hours of hardy
peddling, we stop for breakfast at a nearby breakfast-type
restaurant for conversation and great food.
Haven't been on a bike in a while? We have people of
all fitness levels participating and we
stop 2 or 3
times for water and rest.
Dates, start
times and locations are published in each
month's Herland Voice.
The June
Ready to Ride!
bike ride will be
at Lake Overholser starting at 8 AM Directions to the
starting point are: From N .W . 39th and Council Rd, go west
exactly one mile and tum left on an access road to the lake.
There are no signs so we can't tell you the name ofthis road
but you can see several goats in the fenced area just west of
the road. Head west (right) on this road, which now circles
the lake, for about a quarter mile to a parking area on the left.
There are lots of shade trees and plenty of parking. The road
that circles the lake is just over 8.2 miles. Ifwe go across the
narrow walkway over the dam, itis about a mile less. We plan
to eat breakfast at the Denny's at Portland and N.W. 39il
after the ride.
