August 2004
Herland Fall Retreat September 10-12, 2004
R
etreat to Robbers Cave State Park September 10 - 12, surrender your worries
and cares and give up your responsibilities
for one weekend. The retreat features workshops, recreation, entertainment, a potluck dinner and a Saturday evening concert in a womenidentified and supportive atmosphere. While we
have lots of activities which are listed below,
many people come to the retreats and park
themselves under a tree with a good book all
day; or go off hiking on their own - there is no
need or pressure to do anything you don't want
to. All women and girl-children are welcome.
No boys over 10, please.
The retreat starts Friday afternoon with plenty
of time for unstructured relaxation. The famous
Retreat soup will be simmering on the stove by
5 pm. Join other retreaters around the campfire
for songs, fellowship and marshmallows. Saturday morning, bright and early, join Judy for a
bird-watching nature hike.
Bring your musical equipment and talent for
the Saturday afternoon Open Mic at 4.
The Saturday evening potluck will give you a
chance to show off your culinary skills. Whether
that means a bucket of KFC or flaming a Baked
Alaska, or something in between,
you'll enjoy.
For our Saturday concert, join
~! ~ancy Scott and her fiddler friend Mili he Marlow. Hometown favorites Mary
Reynolds and Louise Goldberg will also
be there.
Robbers Cave got its name from its alleged association with Jesse James and gangs, and Belle Starr, along
with Cole Younger, and other assorted
outlaws. Also, this historic park offers
tons of things to do including Biking
(road bikes can be rented), bird watching, camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking,
horseback riding, jogging, kayaking and
i

paddle boating, rappelling, rock climbing and wildlife
viewing.
Robbers Cave is located East of Lake Eufaula and
just North of Wilburton on State Highway 2 in southeast Oklahoma . From I-40 take the Indian Nation
Turnpike to McAlester, then US 270 East 30 miles to
SH 2, then North on SH 2 for about 7 miles.

Will your vote make a difference in
2004? Only if you register!
Almost 76 million of us didn't vote in 2000 and with a less than 600 vote margin deciding
the presidency in that election, we know now
more than ever that everyone's vote counts!
This month we are enclosing a voter Registration Form for our readers in Oklahoma. If
you are not registered, or if you need to
change your address or party affiliation,
please fill out the form, stamp it and drop it in
the mail. If you do not need to use it, consider passing it along to a friend. Better yet,
feel free to copy it and pass out copies to your
friends.
If you live outside of Oklahoma, our apologies. Bulk mail regulations require that each
mailing be identical, wherever it goes. But
until August 26th, anyone from any state can
register at any Office Depot store or by going
online at www.wedecide2004.com.

Saint Sybil
Dear St. Sybil,
What journals and periodicals are on your
reading list? To put this another way, can you
recommend some good, liberal-radical publications that might be hiding somewhere behind
the New Yorker or the Enquirer at the newsstand?
Yours, Hungry for the Real News
Dear Hungry,
You can find real news and real ideas at Off
Our Backs, a radical lesbian monthly. The Progressive; In These Times, and Mother Jones ,
are other monthlies which tell it as the liberal
orthodoxy see it. The Utne Reader provides a
great service with their monthly compilation
culled from all of the radical (leftish) rags, both
mainstream and more obscure. The Nation, a
weekly, is one of the very best for political and
intellectual commentary. It has Katha Pollitt
and The Mad Law Professor (Patricia J. Williams) and a great puzzle on the back page
that is so hard it puts Sybil to sleep. Ms.
Magazine is a wonderful quarterly, so thick
and juicy with news and opinion and fiction and
poetry from all over the world that it takes a
full three months to read it through. If you
happen to live in Oklahoma, Frosty Troy's
Oklahoma Observer can't be beat for updating
you on the goings on at the Capitol.
The Sun is a delightful magazine, moderately
liberal and radical, and soothingly intellectual
and a-political. On The Issues was a marvelous feminist monthly which had a strong animal-rights philosophy. It unfortunately is defunct. Sybil hopes that it was not because they
once published some of her musings.
If it moves you to send money to Amnesty
International, The Humane Society, The Nature
Conservancy, The Southern Poverty Law Center, the NAACP, PETA, the Smithsonian, the
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Equality Now, etc. etc. - all of these and
dozens more have wonderful magazines they
send to their members which tell the truth as
they see it about their issues.
There is another quarterly magazine I want
to recommend, even though I feel I need to
apologize for uttering the name out loud. Bitch
is provocative and radical and fun, and jampacked with interesting reading. It aims to be
100% feminist; although the name will cause
some to argue that the founders were misguided in their decision to reclaim the pejorative "bitch"; a word which many feminists
would not let pass their lips even when speaking about Nurse Ratchett or Phyllis Schlafly.
Still, there is a long history of the oppressed
taking power and pride by embracing terms
used to put them down, like "dyke" and
"queer", for two. As well, I imagine there was
a direct connection intended in the transition
between Ms., which it resembles, and their
chosen name, as in "That's Ms. Bitch to you,
buddy!" Bitch has hardly any advertising,
barely more than Ms., which has none. However, some of that advertising will seem over
the top to more traditional (make that older?)
feminists. In a nutshell I would say Bitch is
Ms. in a jazzier, younger, more sexually open
format.
So bon appetit, Hungry-for-Real-News; and
good reading.
Love,
Sybil

Would You Like to Quit
Smoking?
A new website looks to help LGBT cigarette
smokers quit. Researchers at the University
of California, San Francisco (UCSF) recently
launched iQuit, a free Internet-based smoking
treatment study for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender (LGBT) smokers
(www.iquit.medschool.ucsf.edu).
This study comes on the heels of research
showing high rates of smoking in the LGBT
community. In some parts of the community,
LGBT smoking
rates can be as
much as 50%
higher than
their heterosexual counterparts. This
along with the
smoking kills

programs an
emerging public health priority for LGBT individuals.
The study will compare two Internet-based
smoking treatments: one that provides general information that has been helpful in a variety of smoking treatment programs, another
that includes the general information plus information and support designed especially for
an LGBT audience. Smokers will be randomly
selected to participate in one or the other. Researchers hope to enroll 600 participants over
the course of a year. The purpose of the study
is to determine if either treatment results in
higher rates of use, more quit attempts, or
higher quit rates.
iQuit is unique in offering participants cessation services that are highly convenient and
private. LGBTs can access the site's resources
any time of day, from multiple locations, and
their participation is kept confidential. To be
eligible for the study, individuals must be 18
years of age or older and identify as LGBT.
For more information about this study, visit
the iQuit website at

WENDY ALLEN
CONCERT
AT CHURCH OF
THE OPEN ARMS
Wendy Allyn, singer
and songwriter, will
be performing at
~
Church of the Open
Arms, located at 3131 N. Pennsylvania, on
Saturday, August 21st at 7:30 pm. There is
a suggested donation of $5 to $15 with all
proceeds to benefit Church of the Open
Arms.
California born, Oklahoma grown, Wendy
Allyn writes songs that combine the stable
and sturdy traits of a prairie farmer with a
breezy west coast attitude. Solid lyrics float
on shamelessly hummable melodies. Her
debut album, Catalina Days, offered a showcase of her songwriting skill. The album received extremely positive reviews. Since
that recording was released, Wendy has
traveled the country, living for awhile in the
northeast, awhile in California, and some
time in Hawaii.
Wendy's songs cover the gamut of the human experience, from family ties to social
issues. Characters in her songs come to life
in succinct composite sketches, drawn with
lyrical pictures. Like a good storyteller,
Wendy gets her listeners involved in the
songs from the first line and keeps them
hanging until the last note. You'll believe
that she lived every minute of the tales she
tells - and you'll be right.
For more information, contact Church of
the Open Arms UCC at 525 -9555.
