Keeping Up
with Kip
by Paula Walowitz
·1 cm do fun things md still knife 'em
a little.·
-Kip Snyder
He's the man behind the chorus, or
more accurately, in front of it. He focuses the wildly divergent talents and energies of ninety singers into programs that
range in tone from unabashed camp to
what he calls 'slightly political' numbers
that express his own rage and frustration
about AIDS and the lives it is stealing
away. He is Kip Snyder, music director of
the Chicago Gay Men's Chorus, and
he's got a lot on his mind lately.
When Kip came up with the notion of
performing The Pirates of Penzance for
the first time last year (encore performance on April 6-7 at Lone Tech), it was
to give himself a break.
Since its inception 7 years ago, the
CGMC has been committed to the joys
of popular and theatrical music and to
offering its audiences and its members a
good time. But the chorus has lost
eleven members to AIDS-related illnesses, and several more have been diagnosed with AIDS or ARC. As Kip says, 'It's
hard for me to program 7ippitty-doodah' in this day and age.'
The chorus is 'an extended family,' he
says. 'The music aspect is what brought
us together, but that's not all that keeps
us together.' The CGMC has had to become an active support network as well
as a musical organization. Kip says he
sometimes 'jokes· about 'feeling like
Rose Kennedy, who's pushing 100 and
watching her whole family die.'
Understandably, Kip was finding it a
struggle to keep lightness and high spirits
in the chorus' productions. For the GALA
(Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) festival last year in Seattle. Kip designed a set that 'kicked off' with what
he calls a 'militant· version of 'These
Boots Are Made for Walking' and closed
CGMC's Kip Snyder.
with the execution scene from Francis
Poulenc's 'The Dialogue of the
Carmelites.'
For this piece, which relates the beheading of the Carmelita nuns during the
French Revolution, ·every time the guillotine went down, several guys would
leave the stage, until only four guys were
left singing' by the end. 'Is this me working
out my stuff about AIDS?' he asks, sounding sure of the answer.

Mike Savage: With Dignity
by Lawrence Shell
Mike Savage's involvement with Dignity Chicago deepened two years ago
when Cardinal Bernardin forced Dignity
out of the Catholic Archdiocese. The
Cardinal's actions prompted Mike to
seek a leadership role in the organization. The result will be two years as president this July.
According to Savage, Dignity serves
two main purposes. First and foremost,
Dignity ministers to the gay community,
helping gay and lesbian Catholics integrate spirituality with their sexuality. However, Dignity also, by its mere existence.
challenges the Catholic church and its
doctrine and maintains the possibility of
dialogue with the church as well.
Mike is single and lives in New Town
with a roommate. When asked if he
had any pets, his response was, 'I don't
want to be a single parent of any nature.' He grew \JP in Fairfield, a small
town in southern Illinois. where
'Catholics were the target.· He went to
st. Louis University and remained in the
st. Louis vicinity after graduation.
Four years ago he moved to Chicago
because here 'you can be more visible,
out. and political than in st. Louis.' After
working as a community organizer with
UNO for a number of years. Mike took
his present job as managing director of
program operations for Travelers and
Immigrants Aid. an organization that
works to help the homeless, immigrants
and refugees.
When asked what issues he felt were
most important to the gay community,
he said that he favored the creation of
a community organization similar to
UNO or Operation PUSH. This would
consolidate our power and accurately
represent the whole community. With
such an organization in place, we
could then begin tackling specific issues such as AIDS funding, domestic
partnership legislation, or even senior
housing for gays and lesbians.
Mike is an avid reader and runner. He
doesn't always have the opportunity to
run as often as he would like to, but he
does read eight gay and lesbian weeklies from all over the country on a regular basis. Some of his recent. "favorites"
include My Leff Foot, Bright Shining Lie,
and the Neville Brothers' Yellow Moon. '
and energetic effort to 'start looking on
the brighter side.' His plans for the Gay
Pride concert include tackling some
country-and-western tunes ("you know I
have to do 'Stand By Your Man'") and
Neil Diamond's 'Headed For the Future."
And, of course, there's nary a hint of sadness in the chorus' production of Gilbert
& Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance.
which they've subtitled A SWishbuck/er.
Aside from two female leads, the guys
do all the ports-pirates, soldiers. and the
dainty daughters of the 'modern major
first tenors. Kip lands the pirates on the
Belmont rocks. amid sun-worshipping fellows in lawnchairs. but otherwise
changes nothing. With the Pirate King referring to 'an ill-natured fairy' and the
daughters asserting 'we'll be queens
and make decrees." the dialogue
seemed just right as is.
The CGMC's encore production of Pirates will hit the Lane Tech stage with
full orchestra at 8 p.m. on April 6th and
7th. Tickets are available at several outlets in town or call 312-477-9380.

SINEAD O'CONNOR
March 28, 1990
;
Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
We all know something has to be up
because ...well. .. Sinead grew hair! And
yes, there is change abound. The radical.youthful anger is gone and replaced
by Sinead's new motherly, tamed and
settled approach. Social awareness, injustice, and life with child are the chief issues but with her broadening of material
she has left behind her flare for intensifying the emotion of a broken heart.
O'Connor's calm, new horizons will
take this girl (me) some time to get acquainted with.

Oh, yes, women and trains. Following on
the heels of Michelle Shocked's super se~
·'If Love Was a Train,' and Meli$a
Etherldge's rocking 'Royal station 4/16,'
comes Siberry's 'Something about Trains,'
a funky ode to the rails which will make
you wonder why riding the subway can't
be as much fun. Although somewhat of a
musical mystery even to expatriate Torontonians like myself. Jane Siberry's Bound

Canada's finest homegrown talents.

WILSON PHILLIPS
Wilson Phillips
From the mouths of babes-or rather
from the daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson, and John and Michelle (Mama and
Papa) Phillips, Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson. and Chynna Phillips make up the
fresh new trio Wilson Phillips.
Their album. self-titled Wilson Phillips, has
taken three years to come together, but
proves to be well worth the wait. Wilson
Phillips is far from being another media
packaged Expose or Seduction. This threesome draws from their own musical tradition. And knowing each other since childhood. their familiar blend of songwriting
hits home.

Happy
(Political?)
Returns
by Paul Adams
Dear Friends.
It gives me much gratification to begin
my column anew with the premiere issue
of Nightlines. Returning from my European saga. I took a year off from ACT-UP
and AIDS-related work to pay attention
to personal needs and those of my family and friends.
The last thing I did before entering semi-retirement that even hinted of politics
was to resign from the staff of Gay
Chicago Magazine.
Now some people in the community
have assumed that I composed that hot,
scandal sheet, 'The Bert and Ernie News.'
To this day, I have yet to see or read the
'News,· and cannot take credit for its
journalism nor its publishers' ingenuity.
Although I have been lying low for a
year. I have not been out of touch with
events in the big city. This year's state
and local elections have made for interesting obseNation; in particular, the
role of Chicago's gay and lesbian community.
As the gay and lesbian community
flexed its voting muscles ( l 0% of the
vote?) and drew over 50 politicians to
this year's IMPACT fundraiser. several of
our activist champions signed on to politLcal campaigns.
Even members of the award-winning
'Gang of Four' have taken to endorsing
and/or working for politicians.
Which leads me to question the motivation of gays and lesbians pursuing party politics: Is it the excitement of the
campaign or the promise of paid political futures? Were deals cut in City Hall
for the passage of the Human Rights Or-
25
dinance? If so, it must be time for the
pro-ordinance aldermen to call in their
I.O.U.s.
And what becomes of the politicians
who did everything the gay and lesbian
community asked of them and more?
The aldermen who went to bat for us,
voted for the ordinance and honestly
represented our positions. How does the
community vote when our own gay and
lesbian candidates are running against
the community's esteemed friends?
Granted, I think the majority of gays
and lesbians getting involved with party
politics believe they are affecting positive social change by working within the
system. Perhaps they hope that if the
system is infiltrated with enough sincere.
hard-working and influential homosexuals that the system will change.
Unfortunately, the system does not
change internally. A gay or lesbian activist must mutate in order to penetrate
the system. Homosexuals may become
a necessary element. but will never be
welcome members of the system.
Currently, we are basking in the community's recent successes and recognition. But as blacks and women have
learned. all movements are plagued
with leaders who are willing to compromise their vision for a piece of the political (power) pie. So a few token gays
and lesbians get political jobs and the
community should be appeased.
Our community is once again split between the machine politicos and liberal
outsiders. I'm glad that I can sit this one
out and watch from a safe distance
away.
My address in the suburbs is my best
excuse for not endorsing Chicago candidates. How can I endorse someone I
cannot vote for? I know it is a cop out
because politicians do it all the time.
Of course, we all have to live with the
consequences of the election results ...
So please take the time to become an
educated voter.

Doing Dallas
by J. Higgs-Peres
I pulled off the expressway in Dallas
and drove to a motel for the night, and
as I reviewed vacation maps and bar
guides on the bed, I discovered a Western bar within walking distance. I put on
my hunting clothes and went.
It was a small place--the stools were
empty except for a lad with orange hair
and, farther down, a slim man wearing
a red construction hard hat. The dust
and clay on his clothing were real and I
wondered if this jock knew he was in a
gay joint.
Spots and lasers played on the dance
floor where a mob of cowboys were
clumped together attempting conversation, and the beat suddenly gave me
a jolt of euphoria.
But serious booty-shaking to hot
rhythms was definitely out for these
guys. Posing was very in, which helped
explain why nobody was dancing.
Their Justin boots, bib shirts and bolo
ties were impeccable. Beaver and
straw hats were adorned-with enough
fancy trim to give a Christmas wreath
competition.
I ordered a tonic and walked over
by the "blond.' He tried his damndest
to focus, then casually said, "When I
was a kid I used to rub lemon juice on
my hair, to bleach-in highlights. How
about you?"
I immediately surmised that he was
27
wasted: my hair is black. I ambled off.
"Hey: whined the kid, "where are you
guys going?" I then talked over to hard
hat, who jokingly asked, "Don't you
want to be a junior's daddy?" "Daddy," I
gasped. "Listen, I am nobody's father. In
fact, the last time I got bedded by a
live female I only weighed five pounds.·
He chuckled, and we both scoped
each other up (discreetly). He was sickeningly handsome, in his late 40s, and
could easily pass for the Marlboro man's
brother. But there was this ·not interested" sign in his grey eyes ...
"Tell me something," I began, "are
those cowboys real? Do they rope
cows and work out on the range?"
"Shit," he snorted; "the only range them
queens ever worked on is the one in
the kitchen.'
"You terrorist!", I gasped in feigned
horror. We continued talking and, as I
had anticipated, the drunker he got,
the better I looked. Finally, after some
hours, he made a pass. "I got a porny
video at home that will blow your pants
off: he said, waggling his eyebrows
suggestively. "It ain't got a plot, but it is
definitely a 2-hankie movie. Wanna
check it out?"
'O.K. by me, I replied, regretting it as
soon as I said it. "Let me go to the bathroom and then we'll go," he said, staggering off. I wrote a short note explaining my change of heart. and placed it
under his glass. I took another long
glance at the pretty cowboys ... and
then walked out the door.

GARVEY from previous page
What a shame. He was so cool when we
were little. Long hair. All the answers.
Now he was just another prematurely
graying corporate OINK. What a shame.
With no recourse, I donned my jean
jacket and went outside to ask what.
What is not a person, actually, but
rather a thing. I got it from seeing

So I lifted my head to the night sky,
and put the question to What. "What," I
said, "why do you s'pose there were so
few lesbians my age at the Lesbian

The stars glittered through the trees
and What answered nothing. But What
never does. That's why What is What.
And then it occurred to me, with no
help from anyone, 'Gee ... why don't
you ask them?'

Bar Review
Lucy's been to the Jeffery Pub on the
South Side before-In the afternoons. Okay.
So maybe that's not the best way to get the
'feel' of a bar, but neither was attending
the Female & Male Exotic Dancer Show.
One recent Friday we had the displeasure
of experiencing the show. expecting a special gay extravaganza but. instead. witnessing a strip show from hell! Our hostess at the
door and the bartender set the mood for
the entire evening: first. the hostess by overcharging and that Jeri-curl-wearing-mess
behind the bar was rude.
We wonder If the rest of the patrons were
ready for a straight strip show. We were
amazed that a gay bar in the 90's would try
to entertain a gay crowd with a straight
show. It wasn't so much that the strippers
were straight. but the Emcee was so homophobic (internal/external-who knows?). he
had to make ugly, insulting straight comments about the dancers. With the mike in
his hands. this man thought he was a good
Lou Rawls impersonator. We both feel he
needs better clothes and less liquor before
trying this. The female dancers were quite
talented and worth watching. The male
dancer. on the other hand. was boring and
lacked imagination--hope he doesn't live
on his tips. His body wa; enjoyable to
watch but his dancing wa; trite and nonstimulating. Leave some money in your
budget for a few new costumes. too.
The only things worthwhile were a few
pretty new faces and the great high energy dance music. Jeffery Pub-keep the music and rid yourselves of that shaky dance
troupe. You can also remind that bartender
that ifs the drinking patrons that help pay
for her curls.

Grey's participation in the association
nearly goes back to its beginning in
1979, when it was known as the Gay
Athletic Association. When she joined in
1980, only two sports were offered: softball
and bowling; Grey was one of a

the board on a platform of ( 1) creating
more sports within the association, and
(2) starting a women's division.
She was elected, and in quick succession added coed volleyball; Proud
to Run; women's softball, volleyball,
tennis and basketball; pick-up football
for men (no longer offered); racquetball; and women's touch football.
Once the various women's sports were
underway, Grey turned their management over to others. This shared responsibility, Grey maintains, is what has
made the women's league so strong.

extravagant or Hollywood-esque as
the Gellert Baths in Budapest, where I

August.
But as I had suspected, certain immutable universal truths hold up even
at Division and Darnen.

together naked in a public bath house
and straight men suddenly become
interested in each other's dicks.

you will find men who like to touch
naked men.
The Division Street Baths is a slightly
run-down but friendly two-story complex on the near West Side. It m ost certainly has no self-consciousness as a

refreshing. It costs $12 to get in, which
includes a sheet to wrap around your
waist, two towels, a bar of soap, and a
locker.
The main floor houses the lockers, a
bar and snack bar, a N blaring channel 44, and a large "sleeping room:
The actual baths are downstairs--a violent whirlpool, a freezing bath, a wideopen shower area, and a large sauna
where naked attendants throw water
on an old oven.
A visit to this hidden corner of Homoerotic Chicago should prove fascinating to any male who reads Wockner
articles, but the Division Street Baths
holds out particular pleasures for that
subgroup of you who cream your

jeans over:
1) dark
swarthy men
with accents,
2) deliciously droopy foreskins hanging
from oh-so-foreign cocks,
and
3) tight little
ethnic beer-bellies.
The evening I visited, all of the other
SO or so men were Slavic or Hisp anic.
They either spoke Spanish or heavily
accented English . And most were
... available.
Eye contact at the Russian Baths is
no mystery--if you've mastered Little
Jim's, you're ready. Having sex once
you meet your dream dude presents a
minor challenge though.
Alas, thanks to keen detective work
and subtle observation, I have tips:
If your goal is to jack off with no
touching, the best location is the
wide-open sleeping room. Just be sure
to wait until the straight straight guys
drop off and start snoring.
If you long for more intimac y, the
rules are the same as anywhere
across this great land of ours. Find
yourself a cropper, coax your man into the cubicle, lock the door, get
one set of feet off of the floor, and
go at it.
Although my boyfriend frowns on
excessive investigation for this column, I can report that on the night I
visited, I was able to cautiously observe or clearly Infer numerous instances of men coming together for
the pleasures they'd seek openly if
we lived in a more civilized society.
