National Elections
November 2nd, 2004
Don't Forget to
Almost 76 million of us didn't vote in 2000 - and with a less
than 600 vote margin deciding the presidency in that election, we know now more than ever that everyone's vote
counts! Deadline for registration in Oklahoma is Octo-
ber 8th.
Jamie Anderson in Concert
at Herland
Herland is proud to present Jamie Anderson in concert
at Herland on Friday, October 15, 2004, at 8 pm.
Touring nationally since 1987, Jamie Anderson is known for
her solid songwriting and engaging stage presence. With a
voice as smooth as Shawn Colvin and a sense of humor as
wacko as comic Suzanne Westenhoefer, Jamie has entertained in hundreds of coffeehouses, concert halls and festivals all over the U.S. She's performed on the main stage
at the National Women's Music Festival, the Kerrville Folk
Festival, at colleges, pride events, folk festivals and at almost every women's music festival. She has seven recordings, including the newest one Listen. Her songs have
been featured on the Dr. Demento radio show, car Talk
and many stations all over the world.
Witty, charming, and sometimes topical, Jamie can run
you through the entire gamut of emotions in one show,
guiding listeners through the joy of families ("Forever Family"), the pleasures of love ("I Wanna Drive"), pride ("When
They Know Who We Are") and a good reason why you
should never break up with a songwriter ("I Miss the Dog
[More Than I Miss You)". A song she wrote with Sue Fink,
"A Family of Friends," has been sung by choruses in the
U.S and canada, sometimes with Jamie as their guest
artist.
Jamie wishes her cat would stop trying to collect
songwriting royalties for "When cats Take Over The World."
In the rare time that Jamie is not touring, she teaches
songwriting at Duke University and other places. She has a
chapter in Songwriting and the Guitar, a book that also includes Paul Simon, The
Indigo Girls, James
Taylor, Joni Mitchell
and others. Jamie has
also penned several
articles for Acoustic
Guitar.
Tickets are on a sliding scale from $10
to $15.
"As a writer, Jamie
takes the archetypical forms of folk music and story telling
and turns them on their heads! A fresh (in every sense) and
original artist." -- catie Curtis
"For me, folk music tells a story about folks, simple tiUthtelling and magical mythology that invites the listener to lean
in to the larger circle of life. Jamie Anderson is in that circle
and she is singing some wonderful songs." -- Holly Near
A Little Firefly Story
Herland's Fall Retreat at Robbers cave was a dream
weekend. About 46 of us enjoyed ourselves in the beautiful
pine woods of Eastern Oklahoma. The weather was perfect,
the pileated woodpeckers made a show for our birdwatchers, and all of the dogs were perfectly behaved and totally
lovable, from the husky the size of a wolf down to Joleen
the 8-week old speckled doxie pup. Most of all, the musicians were wonderful, both on and off stage. Thank you
Nancy, Millie, Lisa, Mary and Louise.
A lot of folks are going around talking about the great
feeling of love abounding all weekend, which sounds a little
hokey but it's true. A little lightning bug story kind of exemplifies it: This little fella blinked behind the performers in
the pavilion during most of the concert; at first we were
charmed and then worried for it. Sure enough, it was
caught in a spider web. Our Texas songstress Nancy Scott
rescued it, and painstakingly picked every bit of the sticky
web off the tiny little bug. And after resting a little while, by
golly, it flew away. So it's still hokey. But it's true, and it
was wonderful.

One-day Boycott
The U.S. lesbian and gay population spends an average
of $1.4 billion each day, totaling $500 billion a year, and
Boycott For Equality is organizing a one-day nation-wide
economic 'walkout' on October 8, 2004 to make that point
clear.
Boycott For Equality is an Atlanta-based non-profit
formed to promote the boycott, scheduled this year for October 8. For that day, GLBT Americans and their straight
allies are encouraged to withdraw from the economy in
three specific areas:
1) Do not purchase anything. Do not generate sales tax or
business revenue.
2) Don't work. Take the day off - do not generate
payroll taxes, income taxes or add to the economy.
3) Do not use cell phones. Dropping out of the communication network is a way to measure the impact
of your presence.
The one-day event is designed to highlight the contribution that lesbians and gays make to the domestic economy
and tax base, at the same time they are denied the full legal protections and civil liberties afforded heterosexual
Americans.
"We want to remind those in our nation who don't always see the impact of our community in terms of dollars
and cents that we do have real market power," said Boycott
for Equality Co-Founder Dale Duncan. "We were inspired by
Don't Amend founder Robin Tyler's famous quip, 'If being
gay is a disease, let's all call in sick to work' and decided to
put those words into action."
Up to twenty-seven million Americans identify as being
primarily lesbian or gay, yet no Federal law provides protection from discrimination in the workplace and many State
and Federal laws prohibit access to the rights and responsibilities of marriage.
According to the Washington D.C.-based public relations
firm Witeck-Combs Communications, the US Gay, Lesbian,
Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) population contributed an
estimated $500 billion to the U.S. marketplace in 2003.
"This event brings into focus the economic cotribution of
GLBT citizens," said Duncan. "And people understand
money. The response so far has been tremendous."
Boycott for Equality reports that some major groups
which have endorsed or encouraged Boycott for Equality
Day include the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Don't
Amend: The Equality Campaign, The Advocate magazine,
Civil Marriage US, DC Diversity, Equality Illinois and Wyoming Equality.
Additionally, comic Margaret Cho's web site, loveisloveislove.com, has listed Boycott For Equality Day as one
of the "12 Things You Can Do" to promote gay and lesbian
equality.
October 8 falls on a Friday, and the following Monday is
National Coming Out Day, Duncan explained. "It seemed
like a great time to make our presence felt."

Train Trip to Ft. Worth
Organizing
Herland is exploring interest in
organizing a train trip to Ft. Worth
the first weekend in December (the
4th and 5th). Tickets for the Amtrak route are $46 roundtrip and leave OKC about 8:30 am.
We would arrive in Ft. Worth about 12:30 pm and could
choose from any number of hotels downtown that are within
walking distance. Participants could share up to four to a
room or get their own if they prefer. There are several
world-class art museums and lots of good places to eat in
the downtown area also. We would leave Ft. Worth at
around 5 pm the next day and arrive in OKC about 10 pm. If
you are interested, please email us at herlandsisters@cox.net
and let us know. We would like to see how many folks
would be interested before we make any plans.
Enclosed is a contribution for $ _ _ __

Counter Boycott?
The American Family Association, a right-wing staunchly anti-gay organization, published the following on their web site,
along with a petition to Proctor and Gamble which we certainly did notsign.
''Procter & Gamble/ makers of Crest toothpaste and Tide detergent has publicly thrown their support and money behind
I the homosexual political agenda. The companv recentlv wrote to all their Cincinnati emplovees urging them to support the
overturning of a city law which forbids giving special rights to homosexuals. In 1993/ the citizens in Cincinnati refused to give
special rights to homosexuals by a vote of 62% to 38%. P&G is now working to get that law repealed. The company
has given $10, 000 to help repeal the law.
To our knowledge/ Procter & Gamble is the first company to support the political agenda of the homosexual movement.
(Editors/ note: ...not counting the 50% of Fortune 500 companies who give health benefits to same-sex partners!) While not
explicitly saying so/ in their public announcement supporting the repeal P&G clearly showed their support for homosexual marriage. P&G said they "will not tolerate discrimination [against homosexuals] in any Form, against anyone, For any reason.// To keep homosexuals from being legally married is discrimination for good reason/ which P&G says they will not tolerate.
Taking them at their word, P&G supports homosexual marriage.
American Family Association is asking pro-family groups and individuals to:
(1) Boycott two products of P&G-Crest toothpaste and Tide detergent. (Make sure your replacement is not a P&G prod
uct.)
(2) Call Chairman A.G. Lafley at 513-983-1100 and politely let him know that you are participating in the boycott and will
ask others to do the same.
(3) Please register your support for the boycott in the form above.
( 4) Please forward this to your friends and family.
(5) Print out this page and distribute at Sunday School, church etc. //
We hope that Herland Voice readers will please consider a counter-boycott and if you are not now using them, switch to
Crest and llde for the forseeable future. Also, consider calling Chairman Lafley and letting him know that you support the
position of P&G and are appreciative.
And if you like, print out this page and take it to the Church of the Open Arms, First Unitarian Church, Mayflower Congregational, Epworth United Methodist Church, or Sisters, Partners, wherever you go on a Sunday to have fellowship with others.
State Question 711
This fall, Oklahomans will decide whether or not to change
our state constitution to deny the benefits of marriage to any
unmarried couple. State Question 711 goes on to define marriage as only between one man and one woman and prohibits
legally recognizing any gay marriage that takes place anywhere else.
Before we vote, it is important to consider how this change
will impact each and every one of us, gay and straight. It is a
complex issue of rights, religion and equality.
On Saturday, October 2, we are going to talk about the
implications of this controversial state question in the context
of rights, religion and equality. A respected group of religious
leaders, community leaders, attorneys and legislators will lead
a day-long conference on this sensitive issue at Tulsa's Downtown Doubletree Hotel.
Every Oklahoman should be educated on what State Question 711 really means to us as individuals and as a state. Join
us on October 2 for an enlightening experience.

2004 Tulsa GLBT History Project
Lecture-oCTOBER 8
Donor Reception 6pm * Lecture & Buffet Dinner 7pm
All Souls Unitarian, 2952 s Peoria
For the 2004 History Lecture, Lee Badgett will draw on
her recent research in Europe on same-gender marriage to
make predictions about what will happen in the U.S. She
will talk about why some countries give gay couples partnership or marriage rights while others don't, and she'll
make predictions about which state will be next in the U.S.
In addition, she'll address the question on everyone's mind
here: what will happen to heterosexual marriage if samegender couples can marry? Finally, she'll talk about why so
few gay and lesbian couples get married or register as
partners in Europe and what that might mean for the U.S.
Lee Badgett is Associate Professor of Economics at the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is the author
of Money, Myths and Change: The Economic Lives of Lesbians and Gay Men, and is Research Director and co-founder
of the Institute for Gay and Lesbian Strategic Studies.
Prof. Badgett has appeared on television in the US and UK
and on many radio programs including NPR's Talk of the
Nation. In addition to the University of Massachusetts, she
has taught at Yale and the University of Maryland.

Diversity House Benefit Calendar
Womyn of Color announces the release of their 2005 calendar, The calendar of Color. All proceeds from sale of the
calendars will benefit Diversity House.
A non-profit organization that is raising funds to purchase a property, Diversity House aims to provide housing
for homeless gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth
between the ages of 18 and 25 in Oklahoma City. There is
an increasing problem of glbt youth in OKC that have been
put out of their homes because of their sexual orientation.
With few resources and little education and life experience,
they sometimes end up on the street. Diversity House's
mission is to be a safe haven for them. The money raised
will be used to help
give them a chance to
get back on their feet
and become productive
citizens. Funds will be
used to purchase a
house, provide transportation, food and
clothes as needed.
The calendars can
be purchased at Herland or by filling out
the order form below.

October 11 - Coming Out Day
------~....
_,:!"!I
"Come Out. Speak Out. Vote." is
·. 1; the theme for this year's National
Coming Out Day - encouraging gay,
· " lesbian, bisexual and transgender
Americans to talk to their families
and friends about their lives.
"This year, we need more than
'I'm gay and it's OK.' We need our
families and friends to say 'It's not OK to use gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues as a
wedge,"' said Cheryl Jacques, president of the Human Rights Campaign. "We must talk to and involve
our families and friends. Their voices are some of
the strongest in the fight for equality."
National Coming Out Day is celebrated every
Oct. 11 to mark the anniversary of the 1987 March
on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Each
year since, thousands of GLBT people and allies
have celebrated National Coming Out Day in
schools, churches and businesses nationwide
through workshops, speak-outs, rallies and other
events aimed at showing the public that GLBT people are everywhere.
