wish they would find a cure. Life is
a preciousgift and I would like to
have it.11 Hydeia L. Broadbent, 12
yearsold and livingwith AIDS.
Hope is a paradox- strongyet fragile.
Webster defineshope as 1to cherisha
desire with expectationof fulfillment.11 We
relishthe new hopefulnessand we share
with you three reasonsto celebrate.
Mer monthsof planning,the
HIV/AIDS ACTION INITIATIVE for NE
OKC was launched. This project
representsthe hopesand dreamsof a
dozen organizations,many concerned
citizensand clergyand the OklahomaCity
Community Foundation. RAJ
N is honored
to be selectedto administerthe major
grant and work with the InitiativeAdvisory
Group. The goalof the Initiativeis to
prevent HIV infectionin AfricanAmericans
through educationand to assistlocalAfrican
Americanfaith communitiesin developing
programsthat reflect a compassionate
responseto those impactedby HIV/AIDS.
InitiativeCoordinator, PatrickBaker,is
working hard to be a visiblesource of
informationand education.
Patrickgot involvedin the fight against
AIDS when he learnedof its impacton the
Blackcommunityand heard predictions
that by the year 2000, halfthe people
infectedwith HIV will be Blackthough
Blacksmake up only about I 5% of the
population. The year 2000 isjust three
yearsaway and he knowsthere is so much
educatingabout HIV to be done in the
Blackcommunity.
'When it comesto AIDS, the Black
community is virtuallysilent,somewhat like
a stateof shockas if AIDS isthe final blow
to the Blackrace. On the other hand, the
clergyand community organizationswe
haveencounteredhavewelcomed the
Initiative. The most challengingpart is
gettingthrough to a contact personwithin
the church."
Receivinga big hug from BillieJean
King was icingon the cakefor Joan
Foreman when she and Gloria Bellymule
were honored as "LocalLegendsin the
FightAgainstAIDS"by CarePointInc. and
the NationalAIDS FundOctober 5. Joan
and Gloria were recognizedfor the
outstandingdedicationand steadfast

News from the West
Fifteen people attended RAIN
Training in Norman in September and
several RAIN Teams gathered new
members from this training. Thank
you to the staff and members of the
Norman Unitarian Universalist
Fellowship for their hospitality and
hosting the training. RAIN Volunteer
Coordinators, Rev. Kathy McCallie &
Jeni Markham-Clewell were two of
the presenters. Kathy gave the
"Spiritual Concerns" presentation and
Jeni presented the "AIDS IO I" session.
Thank you Kathy and Jeni!
Two attendees, Cristie Walker
and Corrine Smith, are members of
junior League who have chosen AIDS
as their area of focus for their
volunteer work for the coming year.
Cristie will be doing HIV/AIDS
Education/Prevention presentations
for PTA groups and Corrine will be
developing a video about RAIN that
can be used when making community
presentations.
Joan and her daughters traveled
to Washington, DC, on the Epworth
United Methodist bus to see the
Names Project Display of the National
AIDS Quilt. They participated in the
Candlelight March from the Capitol to
the Lincoln Memorial.
•
Plansare being made for the
World AIDS Day Candlelight
Memorial Service to be held Sunday,
December I , at Epworth United
Methodist Church in Oklahoma City.
RAIN intern, Travis Brewer,
Community Health student from the
University of Central Oklahoma, is
helping us organize a RAIN Client
Memorial Book.
The next Western Oklahoma
RAINTraining will be December 7 &
14 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in
Oklahoma City.
The first two AIDS Care Giver
Workshops in September and
October were attended by small, but
enthusiastic, numbers of RAIN T earn
members. Presenters Gail Addis and
Beverly Rapp gave excellent
presentations on "Setting Healthy
Boundaries" and "Creative
Visualization". November's workshop
will feature Art Therapist, Pat Lynn
Moses, and December's workshop
will be on Grief and Bereavement.

Jeffrey Knox, Eastern OK
Volunteer Coordinator, has scheduled
an HIV/AIDS panel of PLWAs on
November 13th. A Caregivers and
Boundaries workshop will be held on
February 5th, featuring Dr. Roy
Steinhoff-Smith from Phillips
Seminary.
A continuing education
workshop in Muskogee, January I I th
from I 0:30 am to 4:30 pm, will
benefit the Southeast OK RAIN
Teams.
Eastern OK RAIN Training is
scheduled for January 13, 14, & 15,
from 5:30 pm - 9:00 each night. Call
the Tulsa office for details or
cegistration. -
News From the Northwest
Alisa Hankins, our Northwestern Associate Coordinator, is taking a
leave of absence from her duties in
Enid. When she returns to work on
November 18, she will be working
half-time. She wants to thank all of
the RAIN Board members, staff,
clients and RAIN T earn members
who have telephoned, sent cards and
offered their support during her time
off.
Alisa worked very hard with
others in Enid to put on two fund
raisers to benefit RAIN, OGRA's
"Tumbleweed Ball" on September
14, and a performance of the "Follies
Revue" on September 28 at the
Gaslight Theater in Enid. Both were
wonderful events. Thanks go to the
Oklahoma Gay Rodeo Association,
the Enid HIV/AIDS Coalition, Enid
RAIN T earn members, the cast of the
Follies Revue and others who made
these two events possible.
During intermission at the Follies
Revue, Alisa made a touching
presentation to Michael Pontious,
M.D., a physician in Enid to whom the
performance was dedicated.
The November Training has
been rescheduled for January. Alisa
hopes to have the first RAIN Team in
Woodward in place by Spring.
News from the Southwest
In August, Saundra spoke at the
Baptist Comanche-Cotton Association
quarterly meeting and bragged on the
new Friendship Baptist RAIN Team,
currently the only black Southern
Baptist team in the state of Oklahoma.
This team is supported totally by their
pastor, Leroy Adams, and the entire
membership of their church. The
October RAINTraining in Lawton
resulted in additional members for
teams in Duncan, Ardmore, and
Lawton. Saundra is a valuable
resource for pastors needing help for
persons just dropping into their
church office and saying I have
HIV/AIDS and I need help and can I
come to your church ....
Two SW Oklahoma RAIN clients
have been on protease inhibitors for
several months now and their teams
are not getting to do much for them,
just staying in touch. It is really nice
and we celebrate these days of
freedom for our clients.

Foodfor Thought
Love dissolves inequities the
way the sun melts icebergs in the
sea. Love reaches to help without
thought of how much or why. It
catches hands with the weak and
comforts in total giving.
Love is not a one-way street,
no different from standing in the
sunlight or catching the garden's
fragrance - if you are there, you get
it. You see it in compassionate
expressions, you sense it in the
gentle touch.
In agony it seems not enough
was given, things were left undone.
But in absolute truth, if you loved,
you gave it all. Not of necessity,
not because it was expected, but
because it flooded out - warm and
alive. And it heals.

News from Creek County
RAIN Education
Coordinator, Dannette Russell
Geren, didn't allow herselfto
linger in the spotlightafter
receivingthe American Red
Crosstop honor for volunteers;
she can't be complacentwhen
it comesto educatingyouth
about HIV/AIDS. A recent
wellnessassessment
at a Creek
County Middle Schoolshowed
that I 6% of studentsalready
felt pressuredto be sexually
activeand 28% felt that they
don't know how to protect
themselvesfrom HIV/AIDSand
other sexuallytransmitted
diseases.Realizingthat the
healthof today'syoung people
is indeed at risk, Dannette
continuesto work with youth in
schools,sheltersand churches.
Fiveyouth from Sapulpa
and Bristow became HIV/AIDS
Peer Educatorsby devoting
their fall breakto completing
the AmericanRed Cross
training. The teens all believe
that they will know someone in
their lifetimeswho is HIV
positiveand they hope to make
a differencein someone'slife.
A Teen Who Cares
Becominga teenageris a
big deal - askany twelve year
old. As Emily Fleischaker
anticipatedbecominga teen,
she also preparedfor her Bas
Mitzvah, the initiatoryceremony for girls in the Jewish
faith. Emily'sparents,David and
Pam Fleischaker,believe
stronglyin promoting human
welfare through philanthropy
and hoped that alongwith
assumingreligiousresponsibilities,Emilywould sharea
portion of what she receivedin
giftshonoring her.
Emilymade a very
significantcontribution to RAIN
this pastyear. 111wanted to
help a smallorganizationwhere
my gift would really help. AIDS
is a bad diseaseand I'm
worried about its spread. I'd
like to find a cure for AIDS or

told PamCross in a recent
