mOM THE EDITOR
Webster defines ignorance as lacking knowledge or expierience. This definition would lead one
to believe that ignorance is curable. But is it really ? Do most people choose to be ignorant? If
we believe Webster, then how can ignorance be anything but a chosen condition supported by
the party or parties who participate. Recently, I have begun to wonder if ignorance is
contagious, but my real concem is that, if it is contagious, how the hell does it spread?
I would like to share some experiences I have had with ignorance recently. In fact, some of
these people never seemed ignorant to me before. I will let you decide.
A man with whom I have been associated with for the past fifteen years recently remarked,
"AIDS is a result of promiscuity and these "homos" deserve it. This man claims to be a
fundamentalist Christian. I can't see a damn thing Christian in his attitude.
Oh, and let's not leave out the office. Anyone who works in an office these days is probably
aware that AIDS is the hottest topic going. I got in on a conversation recently where a
secretary admitted her husband's brother had AIDS and is going blind. She ended the confession
by adding, "But he's a queer," as if that removed all compassion. Two of the participants in
the conservation are positive AIDS is transmitted through casual contact and mesquito bites.
Their solution is to ship everyone with AIDS to an island without medical supplies and just
enough food to sustain themselves. I wonder how long the food shipments will last?
Then there are people with my kind of ignorance. I'll explain. A very close friend of my
brother was recently diagnosed with AIDS. We have all been out together partying, and I am
very fond of this guy, but we had never kept in close contact except through my brother. I
consider him the favorite of my brother's friends. He is a beautiful man, a giving and caring
person. I asked for his phone number with the intention of calling because I knew he was
having a really tough time. Then I started thinking, "What will I say? Do I call and act like
nothmg is wrong? What the heU am I going to say?" I went straight home and put the phone
number under my alarm clock. Two weeks later my brother called. He was upset. Call
tomorrow because he is going in the hospital.' I went through my I don t know what to say
crap aU over again. To which my bother replied, "Call and act like everything is fine, let him
talk. It would mean so much to him."
,, ,.,
r
I caUed.I felt better. We talked. His parting words were,"I love you". I felt ike a rat for not
calling sooner. I love him too and what a selfish ignorant thing not to have caUed s^ner.
But there are a lot of people who don't call, as my brother says, because they don t know what
to say. It is easier than you think because once you start talking thmgs

MEMORANDUM
TO: The Woman in Cubicle #8
DATE: Today
FROM: The Woman in work Station #3
RE: Last Night
In response to your memo dated today,I must question your
accusation that I have no control over certain overpowering biological
urges that periodically cause me undue pressure or, more specifically,
unrestrained madness within myself. And I should reiterate that I do
possess those most inconvenient and sometimes unbecoming emotional
qualities that beset me and thus display me as existing in a pre-pubescent
state. I am only human. For these qualities I am ashamed and beg your
indulgence. Only by sheer force of concentration upon more intellectual
endeavors am I capable of oftentimes astounding resiliency from these
monstrously lustful cravings for your company.
Presently, however,I do hereby confess that I am in dire need of some
sort of gratification of the baser aspect of my physical needs lest I take
leave of all my faculties.
If you could please see clear to provide a small quantity of assistance
and concem in this area, I would be most appreciative.
Should you have any questions concerning procedures, please do not
hesitate to call me at 555-3500, ext. B.

- The Fine Art of Survival
byTasha Sumner
So, you can't imagine that you'd ever need
moisture. The cold of the snow can rob

your body of much needed warmth. It
camping, you live in a big city and well,
should always be melted first and then
youd just never have occasion to be
stranded in the Rocky Mountains, an
African jungle or Death Valley.
You don't have to wander in the wilderness
to need and use survival skills. Floods,
hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural
disasters can require at least a basic
knowledge of these skiUs. However much
more likely is the possibility of car
trouble on a deserted road, a plane accident
or a power black-out.
So, here are some basic skills for desert,
winter and home survival. You may not
ever need to put them to use but if you
did, they just might save your live or that
of someone you love.

And, yes, you can get water from the
desert! With the help of a device called a
"Solar Still" you can get water from even
the driest looking country. Dig a shallow
pit about 1 1/2 feet deep and 2 feet around.
Place an empty, open coffee can in the
center of the pit. Cover with a 3'x3' piece
of heavy, clear plastic and secure it with
rocks at all four comers. Now, place a
rock in the center of the plastic so that the
plastic sags towards the center of the can.
Now any moisture in the ground will
condense on the plastic and run towards
the center where it will drip into the can.
This method also can be used to purify
