Learn to Druml
Herland' s Year in Review - 2002
id you know that women were the
original drummers? Are you ready
for a spiritual experience? On Saturday, March 1st, 10 am, Herland Sister
Resources will host a hand-drumming workshop. Come learn 9 basic patterns, learn to
coordinate the patterns into rhythms, and
learn some songs. You may bring your own
drum if you have one but African drums will
be provided. We are asking a $12 donation
which will not only benefit Herland but will
also help buy more equipment for future
drumming workshops. Don't know if you
can do it? If you have a heartbeat, you
have rhythm!
he board and volunteers of Herland Sister Resources were very busy in 2002. We
spent in excess of 1500 hours planning, maintaining the property, representing HSR
at community events, publishing a newsletter, maintaining a web page, and providing
social and educational events for the Oklahoma women's community. In addition to the
income reported in our financial report, board members and volunteers donated $1,691.93
in in-kind purchases of office supplies, building supplies, and food for events and fundraisers. This is a recap of what we did.
Planning activities included a day-long planning retreat that produced a strategic plan to
guide our work for the next 3 years, revising the by-laws, surveying the women's community to learn how to serve it better, and establishing an event email-notification list.
Maintenance and repairs included repairing the entry ramp to keep Herland handicapped
accessible, boarding up and bricking broken windows on the garage, scraping and caulking
windows, and contracting major plumbing repairs and flooring in the bathroom (funded by
our faithful supporters). Thanks to your generosity, we have enough funds from the
plumbing donations to complete much-needed carpentry repairs to the building, such as
replacement of deteriorated outside trim and
soffits, and more serious repair of windows.

Saint Sybil
S
ybil Ludington, Matron Saint of the Forgotten Woman, is an ocrasional contributor
to this space. She answers a backlog of questions today.
Dear Saint Sybil,
What do you make of the fact that when I type Governor Keating's name in a document
and then run Spellcheck, my word processor balks at "Keating" and offers me two other
choices: "cheating" and "kiting". Isn't that a hoot? Do you think some computer programmer - or better yet, Providence - did this on purpose?
Well no, not really - are you thinking that be<:ause "cheating" comes up, it is on account ofall the money Keating took from Mr. Dreyfus and never reported to the Ethics
Commission? Or because he said there had to be moral certainty before executing
someone, then totally ignored the unanimous moral uncertainty ofhis own pardon and
parole board, and killed a possibly innocent man? No, really, I think it is just happy coincidence that you get to have so much fun with Spellcheck. You just find fun wherever
you go, don't you? Whatever, he's outtahere, so forget about him.

Dear St. Sybil,
The President's daughters, Jenna and Barbara, have received very light sentencing for
their drug and alcohol abuse. Inner city blacks or working class whites would likely have
received much harsher sentences, possibly including jail time Don't you think the Bush
girls should receive the same treatment everyone else gets?
Well no, not really- just the opposite. I think everyone else should receive the same
treatment as the Bush girls - treatment, rehabilitation, redemption - a compassionate,
caring response to a psycho/ogiral/sociological problem.

Dear St. Sybil,
A lot of people think that Tiger Woods should boycott the Masters Tournament, in solidarity with women, who are denied membership in the Augusta National Golf Club, where
the tournament is played. Do you agree?
Sorry, but rzo, not really - Wha.t I think is that all of the white players ought to boycott
the Masters in solidarity with women... It is, after al~ white men who make up I daresay
ninety-nine percent of the membership of that sexist, racist bastion of white male privilege. IF the white players boycotted the Masters, that would leave T!!Jer and what - one
or two other players in the tournament? With Tiger to watch, it would still be a fun and
classy event, wouldn't it?
Love and Peace,
Sybil
The Laramie Project
UCO's Department of Theater, Dance and Media Arts will present The Laramie Project
from February 20-23, 2003. The play tells the story of Matthew Shepard's murder and its
effects on Laramie, Wyoming and the nation. In 1998, Shepard was kidnapped, severely
beaten and left to die, tied to a fence in the middle of a prairie. Matthew was openly gay
and targeted by his attackers because of his sexual orientation.
The play is being presented by UCO to encourage discussions within the university and
the Edmond community about discrimination, hate crimes, homophobia, and acceptance.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for non-UCO students, and $3 for UCO students. Call the Mitchell Hall Theater box office at (405) 974-3375 to reserve tickets.

Remember the ERA?
Twenty years ago, the ERA went down in defeat after a divisive political
battle over women's rights and roles in the home and workplace. But now,
even though Republicans are in charge of both the state and federal governments, a coalition of women's and civil rights groups is trying to revive the
ERA.
On Saturday, March 8th, at 3:30 pm, at Herland, Leona Evans of the Oklahoma ERA Campaign will show a short video and then explain the ''Three State
Strategy" to try to get the ERA passed even though the time limit has since
expired. After the presentation there will be time for questions. Light refreshments will be served.
Classified: Daisy is a sweet, loyal companion, but she is not for everyone.
She is a 65 pound lab/chow mix, a handsome dog with a glossy black coat,
who loves to play catch and chew on her toys. She cannot be around other
dogs. Daisy was abused as a puppy, and is not over it eight loving years later.
But she is a faithful and very gentle friend to people she trusts. She has to be
an Only Dog, no other dogs allowed. Other than that, she is low maintenance,
undemanding, affectionate, and doesn't yap or shed much - well all right, she
sheds as much as other dogs. She is completely housebroken and was spayed
following the litter of puppies she had at 9 months.
Daisy would be a wonderful dog to someone with no other pets and without
small children, who wants a quiet and loving companion who would scare the
daylights out of an intruder. She is free to a very good home. If Daisy is for
