WHERE DO THEY STAND?
DOUG DODD, (DJ
U.S. HOUSE
1st DISTRICT CANDIDATE
TO SPEAK AT TOHR MEETING
Doug Dodd, pictured at right, 1st District U.
S. House of Representative candidate (D) will
be the featured speaker at the TOHR membership meeting on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13
beginning at 7:30 PM at the Tulsa Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgender
Community Center (2114 S Memorial).
Mr. Dodd is seeking Rep. Steve Largent's (R) seat in the U.S.
House of Representatives. Mr. Largent will resign his seat in Februa~
to seek the Republican nomination for the Governor of Oklahoma.
Doug Dodd has served the Tulsa area and Oklahoma for many
years. Included in his experience is:
• Over 11 years on the Tulsa School Board, including two terms as
President of the Board.
• Served as a Missile Launch Control Officer in the U.S. Air Force.
• Partner in the Tulsa law firm of Doerner, Saunders, Daniel 8
Anderson.
• Specializes in media law, with an emphasis on First Amendment
and defamation issues.
Nearly a decade has passed since the
institution of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't
Pursue• policy of the U.S. Armed Forces.
But not much has changed.
• Soldiers are still forced out.
• Few soldiers are willing to come out.
• More soldiers are willing to stay in the
closet - out of fear.
That will eventually change, but in the
meantime, what can you do to help change
this discriminatory policy.
Let your congressperson know how you
feel! Write or e-mail them with your point of
view.
Then thank a veteran.
Then thank a gay veteran.

COMMUNITY
TRANSGENDERED:
those who cross the gap between the genders,
to be the person that they are,
instead of the mass produced mold dictated by others.
Transgenders are as common as your next door neighbor or coworker. Yet, as childhood laughter often leads to adult
doubt, many are taught to have such a sense of guilt and fear that we go throughout our lives without telling anyone; often thinking that we are alone. What's so bad about being a woman or a man? Amazingly, clothes can be seen as dangerous to many people!
Most people are simply unaware of the varieties that we, as human beings, naturally come in. TV and advertising
use the sensational, or the comic, to sell tickets and products. Parents and teachers, or other interested parties, attempting to own and operate our lives, tell us to "be this, not
that.• The difference between the way we are told to be,
as opposed to the way that we really are, can be as great
as the difference between those friendly jeans and that
dangerous dress!

THE FACTS
Recent research indicates that as many as 1 in 20, (5%) of
people cross dress to some extent. Most are heterosexual
(straight), many are married. Different people's interest
will range from the very occasional to the frequent, an
erotic tum-on to imitation (the sincerest flattery), to an expression of ones' innermost personality.
Only a very few pursue a "sex change." the vast
majority like and will keep their gender, yet, will on occasion, express the other part of themselves and their unique
personality
Today, reflecting changes in society, many are
more comfortable with transgendering. Movies such as "Just Like A Woman': "The Adventures of
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert': "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything - Julie Newmar", "ma vie en
rose': and others portray transgenders in a humanly positive way.
This recent view is more in line with our earlier history, when transgendered people were not only accepted, but elevated and ascribed with the wisdom, befitting a "Twin Souled" person. In social evolution, as cultures became divided
into different classes, transgendering seemed to go underground.
Over a century ago, most transgenders were women, taking on both the role of men, and the freedom and opportunity that it afforded. At least 400 women, for instance, fought as men during the Civil War.
Today, women who dress in 'mens' clothing are rarely even noticed, as they have more freedom to cross social barriers than men, dressing as they please. Men however, may be sarcastically told: "don't be a sissy" as if femininity were a
sin.
Men are dictated to be one half of a person: that bordering on the strong, tough side. Women are taught to be the
other half of a person, centered around the weaker, more expressive side. For many people, transgendering is a sort of
bridge to express the side denied them, thus enabling them to express the full range of human emotion.
Transgendered individuals have to come to accept themselves and we, as the Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgendered
Allied community, must in tum accept transgenders. After all, we are all human.

FACTS ABOUT THE DEATH PENALTY
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
On January 25, 1993 the Supreme court decided in
Herrera vs. Collins that inmates would not be given another hearing after their last appeal was used, even if
new evidence is found proving their innocence. As a
result, Jesse Jacobs was executed in TX with the approval of George W. Bush on 115195 even though DNA
evidence proved he was innocent - admitted even by
the prosecutor of his case.
The death penalty was established before the 'Life
without Parole' sentence was established.
Only 1 in 100 people charged with murder are sentenced to death. The penalty for the case is determined by the prosecutor and the judge, so can be discriminately given. Because of this, inmates on death
row are disproportionately minority, with even Supreme
Court justices admitting that death sentences are given
randomly, mainly based on race.
Chances of receiving the death sentence drastically
increase if represented by public defenders or court
appointed attorneys, which is the main source of defense for minority, poor, mentally ill, and mentally retarded individuals.
The death penalty has been abolished as cruel and
unusual punishment by 108 nations, 30 since 1990.
The United States is one of the top 5 most prolific executioners in the world, following China, Democratic Republic of Congo and Iran.
The United States is the leader of only 6 countries still
legally allowed to sentence minors to death. The other
five are Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Pakistan.

OKLAHOMA DEMOCRATS
PARTY RESOLUTIONS
HIGHLIGHTING THE ISSUES
AFFECTING THE GLBT COMMUNITY
TOHR's focus on the various political parties in the Tulsa
area and where they stand on GLBT related issues.
HUMAN RIGHTS
• The Oklahoma Democratic Party respects and upholds
the civil, human and equal rights of every person.
The
Oklahoma Democratic Party affirms the role of
•
government at all levels in providing education and
protection of the basic civil and human rights of every
person regardless of race, ethnicity, color, national origin, age, gender, gender identity, sexual nature or orientation, rel igion, creed, disability, employment, civil
service or political affiliation, and of which may be actual or perceived; and,
• The Oklahoma Democratic Party supports the passage
of hate crime laws and the improved reporting and
monitoring of hate crimes with appropriate legislation
necessary to enforce the protection of the basic civil,
human, and equal rights of every person without exception.
• The Oklahoma Democratic Party supports the reproductive freedom of every woman, which means that
every woman has the right to decide for herself when
to bear children, and commits to the correction of economic and social factors that contribute to unintended
pregnancies.
• The Democratic Party of Oklahoma recognizes that
while the citizens of our state have benefited from a
'tough on crime' approach to law enforcement and
prosecution, our judicial system must be equally diligent in preventing the conviction and execution of innocent persons.
• The Democratic Party of Oklahoma supports a twoyear moratorium on the death penalty to evaluate the
effectiveness of our own system of justice to do no
harm to the innocent, and to provide DNA testing, and
other appropriate forensic testing, for all capital punishment cases at state expense to make certain that no
innocent person is wrongly convicted and put to death.

A SWIFT RESPONSE
GLBT ALLIED COMMUNITY URGED TO
WRITE TO LOCAL ADVERTISERS
Members of the TOHR board and membership were
recently made aware of an article, "Can Homosexuality Be
Healed," in a local publication.
Community Spirit, a Christian magazine available for
free at various locations, included the article in it's Special
Family Health Issue.
The following is a sample letter that has been sent to
many of the advertisers in the magazine. Feel free to copy
or use as a guide to write additional letters to advertisers.

Re: October 2001 issue of "Community Spirit"
Dear _ _ _ __
A very thin line separates inflammatory rhetoric and
hate-speech. That line was crossed when Jerry Falwell
and Pat Robertson, U.S. based right-wing fundamentalists,
blamed the attacks on the United States on, among other
groups, the Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgender community.
Those remarks brought nationwide condemnation.
The same line is being walked on by the local publication "Community Spirit,· of which your company is an advertiser.
While claiming "not to inflame,· Community Spirit and
their supporters do so even though not realizing their
"outreach" can do damage physically and psychologically.
Individuals, youth in particular, can fall prey to falsehoods
and lies and be brought into a world that teaches intolerance and preaches hate disguised as love.
Such ·outreach" can contribute to hate crimes and
even suicides. If a youth or an adult who is beginning to
accept their sexuality - the way God made them - listens
to such rhetoric the consequences can be horrific.
• Suicide among youth who identify as GLBT is dramatically higher than their counterparts who identify
as heterosexual.
• In other cases, individuals unable to deal with their
sexuality early in their lives live a lie that can result in
entire families being ruined.
This can be prevented. Acceptance of all human beings, whether they be Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Transgender or
heterosexual, is critical to prevent further damage that can
be done to c:oi.mtless lives.
Free speech is a constitutionally protected right and
one that should be defended by every American. However, that same free speech can cause tragedy when it
preaches "hate the sin, love the sinner.• This attitude can
lead to a hate of the sinner resulting in beatings and
sometimes death.
Your company can take a stand against discrimination, condemnation and hate when you do not advertise in
publications such as · community Spirit." Without your
support, institutions that attempt to "cure• homosexuality
cannot continue to spread falsehoods resulting in potential
damage to literally thousands of people.
As a member of the Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgender allied community of Tulsa, I urge you to immediately stop advertising in "Community Spirit' or similar publications.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact
the Board of Directors of Tulsa Oklahomans for Human
Rights (TOHR) at 918.743.4297.
