Her/and Voice
THE HERETICS: AMOVi8.
Heretical: willing to challenge cultural, formal, social, religious, and
other orthodoxies in the pursuit of open dialogue.
Many people know that Herland was started as a collective in the early 1980s. But Herland was part of a larger international women's movement in which thousands of small, private groups of women met together in forms unique to
their own settings, to consider their situation - as women in a man's world - and to devise strategies for unlocking the
potential in women's lives. Join Herland and the Mary Daly Group at Church of the Open Arms on Saturday, October 27, as we present THE HERETICS, a movie about a New York collective that operated in those heady times.
THE HERETICS uncovers the inside story of the Second Wave of the Women's Movement for the first time in a feature
film. It gives a joyful sense of what it was like to be a feminist in the 1970s, a time when everything seemed possible.
THE HERETICS charts the history of a feminist art collective in lower Manhattan from the inside out. The Heresies Collective published: "HERESIES; A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics" from 1977-1992.

et's call this Olympics the "U.S . Women's
Games. " For the first time, more women are
~competing for the U.S. than men. And overall,
•women make up 45 percent of the Olympians in
London this month. This is the first Olympics where
every country will have at least one woman compete.
I
Back in 1972, when Title IX was passed in the U.S., only 15 percent of all Olympians were female. In the 40
years since Title IX was enacted into law, women's
participation in sports has gone from 32,000 to 200,000
at the college level and from 295,000 to more than 3
million in high schools nationwide.
As Mariel Zagunis- who in 2004 became the first American fencer in 100 years to win a gold medal- said, "I
was born in the right generation. You still have to fight
to be the best. But you don't have to fight for the opportunity to compete. It's come so far. Leaps and
bounds."
And while sports may be the most visible benefactor of
Title IX, the effect of the law has been broad. Herland
will join with other organizations this year to celebrate
the 40th anniversary of Title IX. Watch for more news
in upcoming newsletters about our plans.

NOW Calls for Defeat of Ttiose Who Voted
for 20-Week Abortion Ban
On July 31st; Congress continued their War on Women by pressing for
legislation that would criminalize abortions in the nation's capital after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Sponsored by Rep . Trent Franks ·(R-Ariz.),
the D.C. 20-Week Abortion Ban would have imposed federa l fines and
up to two years' imprisonment for doctors, without exceptions for
rape , incest orthe pregnant woman's health.
NOW and its allies worked around the clock to defeat the bill , and
NOW President Terry O' Neill issued a statement saying she was gratified that at thei r success. Following is the press release from NOW.
The next step is to replace those who voted for it with candidates
who respect women's fundamental ri ght to make their own reproductive health care decisions.
The D.C. 20-week abortion ban is yet another example of House conservatives placing women's health at risk as they pursue their reckless
War on Women. The proposed ban, moreover, was a clear infringement of the District's right to home rule, and yet another outrageous
example of the radical right using D.L's lack of statehood as an excuse to set a federal precedent that chips away at Roe v. Wade .
Rep . Franks and the 220 representatives who voted for this divisive
anti -woman bill have no business interfering with the private decisions a woman makes with her doctor. More importantly; they have no
place in the House of Representatives.
From now to November, NOW activists will be working to defeat those
who voted for this appalling bill and replace them with those who support our rights.
