killing of 12

those of you who do not recall this incident:
Santos and his brother David were picked up by
the police for questioning regarding a burglary at
a gas station. While in a police car, with his hands
cuffed behind his back, Santos was shot in the

this ... one organized by men.) What happened has stuck with me to this day... as
I was talking about the loss of this one little boy and the impact of this on my life

don't talk much about sexism and misogyny at their meetings."); I couldn't figure
it out. (But, of course, I could!) I had thought we were all there together for one
reason: to protest the death of the innocent... minority peoples and groups as
well as this child. But at that time I didn't know that a lot of people and groups have
their own agendas. That some people prefer to fight their own battles alone
because it's easier to look at everyone else as the enemy .. .it's not so easy to
figure out ways for different people to work together. I was very sad that day... for
the family of Santos .. .for his friends .. .for all people without

there. At the time I was president of the
National Organization for Women. Out on the
streets we went. There were all kinds of people
protesting this awful tragedy. The protest was
organized primarily by the Brown Berets; it was
this group of militarily clad men that we had to get
permission from to spsak at the rally. I think they
did not want us to talk because we were bounced
like a ping pong ball between two leaders for
almost an hour before permission was finally
granted. It was only persistence that made it
happen. I got up and talked about the need for all
oppressed groups to work together to end racism
and sexism in our community ... that it was necessary for us to respect our differences and yet
learn to unite on the issues that we had in
common. We as a community had to unite to end
the discrimination and the conditions that keep
many men and more women in this country
virtual slaves. (I remember this part well because

and, in particular, for all womyn.
Now to the main point of these few words. The Morning News reported that
Hispanics protested the 1978 Justice Department's decision. That statement,
though not totally incorrect, creates a false impression. Hundreds of people of all
races were there ... because issues of this nature affect all of us. But sometimes
I wonder if the media and others who write have their own agenda. Is it better for
them to make their readers think that people are not united on issues? Is
promoting cooperation not in the best interests of the
government and the media? I'm not going to answer
that...l know what I think. You have to decide.

But I do want to say ... when you read
something or hear something, no mat- .....,.-...

it, be sure you know what that person's
agenda really is. It may very well cloud

out. It saves lots of confusion ...and the truth is worth it.

Repairing the AC has been an all summer event. The Aciwpuld \
be fixed ... then something else would go wrong with it. Probably
the most significant situation was that there was no single person
working on the repairs from the very first. Once that was taken
care of and once the little idiosyncracies of the unit were conquered everything started working more efficiently. LRC must
thank the new Facilities Coordinator, Diane G, for her monumental efforts in this venture. And LRC appreciates your patience. It
certainly has been unbearably hot and uncomfortable.

A View .from the Outside
I saw and talked with a womyn, who happens to be Vietnamese, the other
day that I hadn't seen at the Centre in months. Before I could ask her why
she hadn't been around (which is always of interest to me}, she told me.
She said she wasn't an activist type person and felt uncomfortable at the
Centre ...that her ideas her not well received ...and that she missed being
around it. I tried to encourage her to take another chance at the LRC
because it was important for all of us to be around people with different
focuses in life. It's impossible to learn about different lifestyles and ideas
without exposure to them. If she were missing being at the Centre, she
had to take some chances and some risks and be w illing to be patient.
Just as we all have to. Being shy or unassertive can certainly make it more
difficult to feel included. And facing womyn who are intolerant of different
ideas or styles makes it impossible. We all have to do our part to build a
better world. So, she said she'd try again. So must everyone of us.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
DearLRC,
pear Editor,
Christine Jarosz has invested herself, her time, and her
energy into the Lesbian Resource Center. Because of the
r9le she has played in birthing and nurturing the center, I
think some of us have unrealistic expectations of her. Just
as we looked to, or dreamed of looking to, our mother to
provide a safe and secure home, we look to Christine to create a safe
and secure center. Christine has been criticized for being too controlling and for not taking enough control. She has been criticized for being
too friendly and for not being friendly enough. We look to her to settle
disputes between members. We are like children who want our mother
to magically know what we want and to provide it. In reality, we are
all adults, and if we want a safe and secure center, we have to create
it. In this time of struggle, we need to avoid extremes. We are not
dependent children who need Christine's mothering. We are also not
adolescents who must rebel against her in order to define ourselves.
We are wonderful adult women with tremendous wisdom and resources among us. Christine's dream was to provide a place for us to
gather. She has done that. Now, let's do our part to empower
ourselves, each other, and the center. And, let's tell Christine thanks for
the wonderful opportunity she gives us to do that.

I must admit that this letter is long overdue. Yes, it is in reference to Barbara's infamous anti-semetic remark. She has
apologized and explained that it was not made out of malice· but
in jest of her own Jewish ancestry.
'
The uproar over the remark worries me a great deal. Censorship
is looming over the horizon as we lose a piece of our freedom
continuously. This seems like such negative energy wasted on
issues that are not at the top fo the agenda of lesbians or women
in general. Does this mean that it will be necessary for the LRC
to elect a review board for future shows to determine what is
suitable for us to see and hear? Does this also mean that the
review board examine all the books and publications in the LRC
library? What happens then?
Too much time has been lost on this issue. There are great
strides yet to be made by us as women and lesbians. We need to
join together and empower ourselves. We deserve acceptance for
our intelligence and for whomever we choose to be our lovers.
The more progress we make now will lessen the struggle for our
daughters.
Sincerely,
Randa Hope

WOMYN EN CAMBIO: GROWTH, DIVERSITY,
MARTI KRANZBERG, Ph.D.
AND CHANGE
Womyn en Cambio (WEC} is a group of concerned LRC
members that was formed over four months ago committed to
revitalizing interest in the LRC from and for the ever-changing
diverse lesbian community. The group's name, "Womyn en Cambio,"
refers to the group's impetus for change or "cambio" for the LRC,
whether the focus is on the organizational structure itself or impacting the actual vision of the Centre. At present, the group is composed
of LRC members which includes both voting and board members,
and is open to any other womyn interested in joining.
WEC's accomplishments to date include involvement in
several open forums which allowed womyn to dialogue about issues
and concerns regarding the LRC. A By-Laws Committee was
formed by the LRC Board in August when the group urged that the
Centre review its existing policies which have been in effect since the
LRC's inception. In addition, WEC initiated the draft and subsequent
posting of the LRC's Policy Statement on Diversity. Womyn en
Cambio hopes to provide encouragement and support of any and all
womyn who have a genuine desire to contribute and be involved in
a growing, thriving, and positively changing LRC.
The group plans to continue being an active and vital voice
within the LRC by effecting change and providing focus for the
Centre. This continues to be accomplished in a variety of different
ways. WEC's members remain visible within the Centre and are
involved in a number of committees such as By-Laws, Communication, Education, and Facilities.
Womyn en Cambio meets regularly and holds a monthly
meeting at the LRC. Interested and prospective members are
encouraged to contact Lori Strong at 275-0708 for meeting times,
places, and any additional information.

No, certainly not "over the hill!' This lively group meets the
2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the LRC, for a
supportive discussion of topics of interest to the "38 &
Upwards" crowd. At our recent discussion of the herstory of
Dallas lesbians, we shared many interesting stories of "coming out" at a time when the social climate was even more
repressive than it is today. In discussions stimulated by the
recent Lesbian Health Fair, we enjoyed sharing our views on
lesbian health issues.
