Financial Report
LRC has two accounts:
one at the Women's Southwest Federal Credit Union
and one at United Savings. At present, we are
maintaining an average
balance of $1800. The figures listed below reflect
an average month. A Financial Report and the Minutes of each Board meeting
are posted in the office at the Centre. It is available to any
member.

Money and time for special projects is donated at this time
by those conducting the projects. You can see that every
dime counts. Your $40 membership pays 1/1 0 of our rent.
Your Founding Mother contribution of $1b a
month pays for the telephone and the utilities.
Without you, there would be no Centre. We get
money from no where else. We are trying for
grant money and private donations. And that
will happen as the Centre becomes more established and more well known. But, at present,
we rely on each other. (But isn't that just like
womyn. We are who we can depend on.) Some
womyn support the Centre through financial
contribution and some through work. And there
are those of us who do both. All contributions
are needed. The Centre would function best if
200 womyn, who really understood how much
of an impact the Centre has on the lives of all
womyn, contributed a
mere $1 0 a
three 12
month (the cost of
packs of Dr. Pepper). We

Zip Code) Project, our New Member (the LRC

Dinner Program, our Peer Counseling Program, our Cultural Awareness Program. You
see, your money, spent at the Centre, actually
supports you and the people you know or may
meet. The Centre is about us. It is about us
taking care of ourselves ... you know, no one
else is going to.

INDIVIDUAL, COUPLE and FAMILY COUNSELING
Those of us who were activists in the ?O's and
early 80' shave ~n advantage over all those who
were not active. During those years, and before,
the Women's Movement provided many opportunities (through weekend retreats, week long
conferences, consciousness raising groups,and
the never ending meetings) for us to learn about
womyn and our many, many interests, issues,
and needs. We talked and talked and developed a great love for womyn, including ourselves. Those were hectic, heady times ... a time
for growing and building ... building that intense
and deep rooted Sisterhood .. .that Sisterhood
that would see us through difficult times and
through the years. Now those sister bonding
times are few and far between; and, now, when
they do occur, they are expensive. Sometimes,
I miss those times. (I actually think we are living
in the best of times right now.) A few weeks ago,
Dallas womyn had an opportunity to experience
a grass roots, a people before profits sort of a
conference. The Sister, Sister weekend, coordinated by Sheila Coughlin and presented by
the Womyn of MCC, was a very nice time. VVe
thank all of those responsible for bringing over
a hundred womyn together to discuss some of
what is important to us. The day focused on
networking, building a community, and ending
racism. Tables for brochures, flyers, and other
literature and things were offered to ·groups. A
table for LRC was womaned by Lisa IV'lashigian
and Becky H. Thanks again to all those womyn
out there who make the effort. LRC loves womyn
who love womyri.
The L~sbian Resource Centre exists to ci:eate physical
space where lesbians are valued for themselves. This
space, committed to a feminist philosophy, willirovide
resources to,all lesbians. The LRC Newsletter is published monthly and is distributed to over 650 womyn by
the LRC, P.O. Box 180446, Dallas, TX 75218-0446.

Disturbing News
Frank Perryman, who is the owner of the building
we rent, was the victim of a stabbing last week.
Please call Parkland Hospital or send flowers to
this very kind and courageous man. Frank opened
the first Gay Bar in Dallas and has done his share
to promote the welfare of the Lesbian/Gay community.
Things We Need... An Appeal for Resources
or Referrals
So .. has it seemed a little cold at the Centre to you lately?
Well, here's the reason why. The motor that runs the
compressor which operates the heating unit appears to have
burned out. So, we have a major problem. As you probably
know, though we do not own the building, we are responsible
for our own repairs. Therefore, the Centre needs a new
compressor or have this one repaired. Have ,a used _
compressor, know of one, ~now of a womyn who can do thiswork,
want to make a special financial donation to the Centre, call
us at 821-3999. Also needed, donations to get our Sharp
Copy Machine repaired ... approximately $350.00 ... we have
been doing without for quite awhile ...a fax machine.would be
nice (it seems we communicate more and more with people

who want to fax us stuff). Alw

What are you going to do about
it?
As you know, LRC has several groups
meeting at the Centre, Umoja Hermanas,
the Tuesday Night Discussion Group, an·
Anti-Racism Group, Womyn of Color 1,ci
Short Story and Poetry Session, the
Women's Lodge, the Under 30's Group, the
Over 38's Group. Something for almost anyone ... except
(as it has been pointed out to us more than once) those
womyn between 31 and 37. Well, at least that is what it
seems. It is, of course, understood that womyn can choose
between these groups or go to both. But, the Centre has
received and heard so many times this enquiry, "What
about us ..what about the 31-37's? Well, dear womyn, the
answer to that is the Centre will be more than glad to help
get another group started; but, you have to start it. Other
places have over and under 35's, but LRC decided to be
different. (How unusual.) Groups start as a need for them
occurs. Under 30's focuses on issues of interest to womyn
under 30 ..:anyone can go to those meetings. The Over 38's
focuses on the needs of womyn over 38 .. .anyone can
come to these meetings. I think there's a need for a lot of
different groups ...support and social opportunities forwomyn
who are teachers, or any group of womyn that faces
discrimination based on sex or sexual preference. We all
need to meet with our peers to help reduce our concern and
stress. So, if we can help you, call us. We have the space,
the experience, the commitment, and the womyn who can
help you with what you need. Oh, yes, thanks for all those
calls .. you 31 's to 37's.

Texas Triangle
This past week, Christine was interviewed by the
Texas Triangle, a statewide Lesbian owned Lesbian/Gay newspaper out of Austin. LRC, its goals, its
purpose, its herstory, its future, was the topic under
discussion. The article will probably come out in the
March 19 issue of the paper... be sure and look for it
at the Centre. The Lesbian Community is fortunate
that the Triangle is operating. If you have not seen
it, you've missed some nice articles. And you will
~ pleasantly surprised to see many articles about
womyn. It is a well crafted publication. Womyn in
Texas would be well advised to read and support a
paper that so strongly supports them.

--111111. .111111-•want to sing, dance, act, play, or
For a couple of years,
Sue Schrader over at
MCC has been talking
about a community
calendar... you know, one of those calendars you can call to
see what events are happening on what date. It is actually
more of a coordinating calendar. Groups or individuals call
in with an event and a date ... they call in and check to make
sure that no other event is scheduled for that day or night.
Sometimes groups overlap their events. And, sometimes it
really can't be helped and all we can say, is " isn't it
wonderful to have a choice ...when not very long ago, there
were no events." But, it is unfortunate when those events do
not have to conflict. Voila! The Community Calendar. Call
821-3999. Your event will be scheduled as you see fit. This
will be a big benefit to the Community, if we all participate.
So, spread the word. The LRC will give keep those who call
informed.

war.t to cry, do you want to have a good
time: do you want to be amazed by the
womyn you know? Just come to the

share our talents with each other. Performers and production personnel are needed for this event.
The date? ... .April 24 at 8:00pm.

My favorite month of the year. Maybe it is yours, too. It
is really a good month for womyn. It is Women's
Herstory Month and March 8 is International Women's
Day. Created by Clara Zetkin, at a conference for
women in Finland at the tum of the twentieth century,
this is the only day celebrated around the world for
women .. .forworking women. And, all women, whether
in the home or the workplace, are working women. It is
more highly recognized and honored in Europe than in
America. Though the month is past, we ought to remember and celebrate this holiday ... and not just during
March but all year round. For further information on this
important women's event and others, see the LRC
library.

Good News
The efficiency and smooth running of the
Centre was given a big boost this month
with the commitment of four womyn to
various tasks. Our four new coordinators
are Carolyr, R heading up the Newsletter
mailing; Lori S directing the Volunteer Coop; Janice~
overseeing upkeep on the lawn and gardens; and,
Becky H coordinating the Community Calendar. Each
of these jobs will benefit members of the Centre as w¢11
as other parts of the Community. LRC is truly grateful
when womyn t~ke on major responsibility.

SPEAKER'S
BUREAU
LRC BUILDING FUND .
ESTABLISHED
I am very happy to announce that at the Feb.
Board of Directors meeting, a motion was passed
unanimously to establish a building fund . The fund
money is not for repairs or remodeling the current Centre but will
be escrowed towards the purchase of our own LESBIAN
OWNED CENTRE. How wonderful! Here's how it works. For
each new Founding Mother Membership $12 ofthe$120will be
placed in the fund. If you are making remuneration by check or
cash, either in part or in whole, a portion is going into the fund.
tf you are signing up at the $40 membership level $5.00 is placed
into the fund. Basically 10% of each new membership (regard. less of level) is placed into the fund. As soon as we have enough
money saved we will then put this money into a separate
account that will hopefully earn a high rate of interest. Regarding memberships by draft, contributions will not be placed into
the fund because it will cause a bookkeeping nightmare. We
hope to figure this out later. Please do not cancel your draft
membership in order to contribute to the
fund. The draft money is used in determining the LRC budget. If you
would like to contribute directly
to the fund, feel free to send
$$$$$$$$$ with a notation that it
is for the LRC building fund. We also
have agreed to have at least one fundraiser a
year, who's proceed will be deposited into the
fund. We do not have any current plans to
purchase a building but we are preparing, and
empowering ourselves for the future. Thanks to all the new and
renewing members.

OVER THE HILL
NOT!
It's been wonderful to see so many "38 and Upwards"
womyn attend the Tuesday night group. The expression
"38 and Upwards" fits these womyn so much better than
"Over'' 38 that we just had to change the name.
The first question from a new person to the group is ...
why 38? Knowing Christine pulled this number out of the
air before the group started in January shows just how
smart she is.
Those of us in our 40's and S0's (we've only had one sister
in her 60's with us) can help the womyn under 40 upwards- gently, knowing that "over 40" is not "OVER
THE HILL".
The "Upwards" womyn want to thank Christine and the
LRC for the opportunity we have been given to come
together.
The group meets the second Tuesday night of each
month for a time of sharing and supporting one another.
The fourth Tuesday night includes a social time.
P.S. We have approximately $78 saved as of
3-10-93
On April 27th we will be going as a group to Cafe Society.

Zimbabwe
Our sisters ........................ .
MARTI KRANZBERG, Ph.D.
I had the opportunity three weekends ago to meet one of Deb
and Helen's friends, Sonia P. Sonia combined business with
pleasure while visiting America from Zimbabwe. We discussed
many things including the abundance and, sometimes, over
abundance of goods and products in the States. For her, as well
as many others from Europe, the products available here seem
rather overwhelming. In stores in her part of Africa, just a little
northeast of South Africa, choices are limited (example, two
choices of cheeses ... instead of 20). We said that America itself
is sort of like a very large supermarket. There are so many
choices: things to do ... movies, theaters, concerts, sports:
stores ... books, sports, sex, grocery: people ... Africans, Asians,
Europeans, Native Americans, South Americans:
ideas ... conservative, socialist, liberal, reactionary, inclusive,
bigoted, loving. (Gee, sounds like the Resource Centre.) The
vastness and neverending supply of differences actually can be
rather overwhelming. There are so many things to do, to see,
and to consider that Americans rush to do them ... really taking
no time to appreciate them ...and then demanding more. Maybe
we need less to enjoy more. Anyway, it was a thought provoking
and very stimulating conversation. It is always amazing to me:
the life I have chosen to' lead allows me to meet the most
extraordinary people and have the most extraordinary experiences.
Sonia works with other Lesbians in Zimbabwe and was very
interested in how the LRC works. Needless to say, I was
delighted with the opportunity to talk with her about the Centre.
Zimbabweans are not permitted to spend money outside their
country. So, these people do not have access to a lot of unusual
publications .... womyn'sjoumals, books, literature, and so forth.
So, I proposed to her that LRC, with the approval of those who
make these decisions, adopt Zimbabwe as a sister country .. .by
sending duplicate copies of journals, etc. What do you think? Is
this a good idea? This project could become costly .. .with
postage the way it is. How can we fund this program? How do
you think we can best support these womyn in this far away
country? Let us hear from you.
