Dallas Life Magazine [August
30, 1992] reports that c l o g . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ,
dancing is a combination of
square dancing and tap dancing.
"It's roots are multi-ethnic:
Scottish, Irish, English, Dutch,
German, American Indian and
African." Webster says that the
clog dance is one in which clogs
are worn to beat out the rhythm
and defines clogs as shoes with
a wooden heel. No matter how
you define it, clog dancing is the
rage these days with classes
springing up all over.
You will have an opportunity to
see for yourself what clog dancing is all about when the Fort Cloggers Fort Worth Stockyard Stampede: (front,
Worth based troupe, Stockyard left to ~ight) Curtis Thom'}s, Mike Baxter, ~rdel/
Stampede, entertains us with Chau, Jimmy Polley. (Behind): Roger McC/mtock
their nimble clog dances (and
teaches the brave ones among us to clog dance!) at the Share the Vision meeting
on Friday, October 9.
The cloggers will "step out" at 7:30 p.m. in the Activity Center of the Dallas Gay
and Lesbian Commurnty Center, 2701 Reagan. There is no admission charge.
The Texas Supreme Court will hear arguments in the lawsuit sponsored by the Texas
Human Rights Foundation challenging the constitutionality of statute 21.06 of the
Texas Penal Code on January 5, 1993. Known as the "sodomy law," 21.06 makes
it a misdemeanor, punishable by a $200 fine, for consenting adults of the same sex
to engage in "deviant sexual intercourse". The law applies to both males and
females.
Two lower courts have struck down the statute as unconstitutional, most recently
the Third District Court of Appeals in Austin in March 1992. Attorney General Dan
Morales appealed the District Court's decision to both the Texas Supreme Court and
the Court of Criminal Appeals. The Court of Criminal Appeals declined to hear the
case, saying it did not have jurisdiction because no one had been prosecuted under
the law.
Although no one has been prosecuted, this case is critically important. The "sodomy
law" has been used as the basis for much discrimination against us. (The Dallas
Police Department, for example, refuses to hire homosexuals because we - with
21.06 on the books - are breaking the law.)

Three of the nine justices who sit on the Supreme Court are up for reelection this
fall. THRF Director of Development Suzy Wagers observes, "We are urging everyone to get out and vote in November. It is important for people to realize that,
as far as this particular case is concerned, this is it." Court costs are currently $60,000
and are expected to exceed $100,000. THRF desperately needs your help to fight
this battle. Donations to THRF can be made to P.O. Box 49740, Austin, TX 78765.

A wonderful catalog of women's products is out just in time for your holiday gift
ordering (l-800-937-1193). Not onir does it have great gifts for women - Gertrude
Stein Pillows, "Women who Dared' cards, trivet art, coffee mugs, t-shirts, sweats,
caps, nightshirts, and safety products - but wonderful gifts for children like Safari
Baby Color Dolls. Children can actually color the dolls and then they can be laundered for a new canvas. And the profits go to help women whose lives have been
shattered by rape and domestic violence.
The Company of Women was started in 1987 by Melinda Little as a for-profit business to help support the Rockland Famill'. Shelter in Spring Valley, New York. The
business is still operated out of Melinda s home and is expected to reach $1 million
in sales this year. Eighty-one percent of the profits go to the family shelter and Little
owns the rest.
The catalog is unique in that it gives statistics about violence against women and
provides a toll free hotline number for women in trouble (l-800-333-7233). It also
features products made by women which help to empower them to become independent. At a time when manY. shelters and services are closing their doors for lack
of funding, the Rockland Family Shelter is expanding it's services due to the growth
of this mail order business. We salute you, Melinda Little, and The Company of
Women!

Le4>ians and the Myth of lndu,;ion
by L.B. Brumage
~
The lesbian community is particularly guilty of self-righteousness and hypocrisy when it comes to the issue of inclusion. Not that I don't admire the vision of lesbians transcending the bounds of racism and general stupidity. But the reality
is that we are all part of the same human race, all subject to
the same nasty socializations. So let's stop pretending that we
are somehow superior, color-blind and all-inclusive.
The T-Shirts are black, 100% preshrunk cotton "Fruit of the
Loom" brand shirts. The Visionaries logo and the words
"Share the Vision" are lavendar with white shadow, and the
triangle is bright pink. (The back of the shirt is undecorated.)
Sizes: M, L, XL, XXL. Sizes M and XXL are limited.
Lesbians use the word "inclusive" a lot, almost as if they had
invented it. But lesbians, like everyone else, only "include"
what they like. If they don't like your politics, your birth sex
(transexuals), your sexual expression (leather dykes); forget
it! Women of color and other minority women are faced with
the same prejudices inside the communio/ as they are in the
"90% world' . Lifstick lesbians are battling it out with bull
dykes on nationa television about who the real lesbians are.
(Now there's a lovely picture of inclusion for the whole world
to see!)
We exclude bisexuals and accuse them of "sitting on the
fence". Some separatist groups take this woman-only concept
to Nazi-like proportions. Lesbian opinion and taste is expected to be homogenized through some filter of politicalcorrectness (sorry girls, no more erotica!). We want to exclude men from our lives because they "come in and take
over". (Although I've yet to hear any dialogue about our responsibility for the role we play in letting them take over.
Lesbian, heal thyself1)
We pay a lot of lip service to the concept of inclusion. We
make sure everybody gets an invitation (okay, almost everybody!). And still there are women in our community who are
disenfranchised and demanding to be heard. Are our attempts
at inclusion merely tokenism or somehow politically motivated? Do we really mean it or are we just trying to look good
for the cameras?

Military Newspapers
Support Gays in Military
We could all use a few lessons in compromise. Standing at
opposite ends of an issue screaming at one another will solve
nothing. We need to shake our leaders up (or get different
ones!). It's time for some solutions, not more civil wars. So
let's just cut the crap, drop the "politically-correct" banter, and
make some real changes. Women have tremendous power
when they work together and an equally devastating power
when they work against one another. If mclusion is the goal,
let's take the energy that is wasted on defending this myth of
inclusion and put it into making inclusion a reality.
*
Like all communities, we have our differences. That will
never change (and I for one wouldn't want it to change). But
we also have a choice. We can find ways to make our differences the bridges between us and our future. Or we will
make certain that those differences remain the walls that separate us all.
Army Times and Air Force Times, newspapers independent
of the military, but whose readership is predominantly military, printed an editorial on August 24th in support of lifting
the ban against homosexuals in the military.
The editorial points out that the old argument that gays pose
a security risk is acknowledged to be invalid even by Dick
Cheney, Secretary of Defense. The editorial also makes the
point that the argument that gays might make others uncomfortable by subjecting them to unwanted sexual overtures is
also true of heterosexuals who subject others to unwanted
sexual overtures. "Any unwanted sexual overture, regardless
of the sexual orientation of those involved, constitutes sexual
harassment and is barred by regulation."
Lesbian
Visionaries
214-528-2426
The editorial comments that the military was a leader in racial
integration and that "sexual preference is no more legitimate
than that based on race, gencler or religion".

As we reported last month,
the entire AIDS Memorial
Quilt will be on display in
Washington, D.C., October
9-11. This is only the second
time ever that the Quilt in its
entirety has been displayed.
The first time was the first
National March on Washington in 1987.
The Quilt numbers over 20,000 panels,
each three by six feet. If placed end to
end, the panels of The Quilt would
stretch a distance of over 22 miles. On
display, it will cover an area greater
than the combined size of 10 football
fields. The display this month will require approximately 5,000 volunteers to
lay it out, monitor it, handle the more
than 300,000 expected visitors, and
clean up afterwards.
Where is "The Quilt" kept? It is stored in the NAMES Pro•ect Workshop in San Francisco.
Who sews all these panels together? Who takes care of
them? Volunteers.
Where does the donation money go? All donations go back
into the local community for direct services for People With
AIDS (PW As) or famihes.
Does everyone who died of AIDS have a panel? No, for
every panel made, there are fourteen other people who have
died.
Isn't this morbid? Not to people who have been touched by
the AIDS epidemic. It is our way of remembering our loved
ones, and fighting back to make sure our loved ones are not
•ust ignored. The Quilt evokes many emotions -- tears, laughter, sorrow, joy, release -- it is an individual feeling/response.
{Thank you, Fort Worth/Tarrant County Names Project, for
assing on the above information . For information on
making a panel, volunteering, or making a tax-deductible
donation, call (817) 33-NAMES or toll-free 1-800-221NAMES.J

Why the size of individual panels? 3 feet by 6 feet is the
average grave size.
How did "The Quilt" begin? In November 1985, Cleve
Jones got the idea when he saw friends taf ing the names of
people who had died of AIDS onto a wal in San Francisco
following a peaceful demonstration march. He watched the
taped pieces of paper fall off the wall and wanted a more permanent way to remember friends.
Saturaay, October 31st
Why a Quilt? Quilts are traditionally warm, heart touching,
personal items that invoke a warm response. The NAMES
Project AIDS Memorial Quilt is an expression oflove -- love
felt toward a loved one who has died of AIDS.

I can only imagine that after the last
camp was struck, after the last RV
rolled through the front gates and womyn's teet no longer tread that earth,
that the land and the wind continued to
echo with the sound ofwomyn's laughter, womyn's music and womyn's
voices. Because Michigan is magic.
The 17th annual Michigan W omyn's
Music Festival was held August 11-16.
It was my second and, certainly, not my
last. If you have never attended a womyn's music festival, it is way past time
for you to discover the wonder and joy
of being on womyn's-only land. Speaking only for myself, although I have
heard these same sentiments echoed by
others, I find the land the safest place
I have ever been. Is it the absence of
men? Is it the positive enerizy that each
womon brings? I think it 1s a little of
both. Let me tell you what this festival
is like.
Many womyn opt to come on Monday,
the first day the land is opened. (Officially, however, the festival begins on
Tuesday.) Since you and all your sisters throughout this country (and from
other countries, as well) have decided
to come on Monday, you line up on the
dirt country road that leads to the front
gate of (drum roll, please) M IC H I
GA N ! (yea!) You turn off your engine, you remove yourself from your
vehicle and get to know your neighbors. (Ours were from Toronto.) Don't
worry, within a couple of hours, you'll
be inside. You'II have signed up for two

4-hour workshifts (I took parking and
a stint in the little 4- JO year old boys'
camp - which is separate from the womyn 'scamping area). You also will
have removed all your gear from your
car and be waiting on a shuttle (a bus,
a flatbed pulled by a tractor, a van, or
a pickup driven by the gorgeous
Keven). Onto that shuttle goes you and
your gear (with the help ofwomyn you
don't even know - yea!). You will be
dropped at the shuttle stop nearest the
camping designation you prefer (ours
was chem-free, Bread and Roses).
Ok, you're in Michigan. Now bow do
you meet womyn? (If you haven't met
any by now, better take those blinders
off because womyn are everywhere
just waiting to be met!) You meet womyn on your workshifts, you meet womyn at any of the many workshops that
are provided from Tuesday through
Sunday. You meet womyn at Sober
Support where 12-step programs are
the order of EVERY day. You meet
womyn watching movies at the Acoustic Stage on Monday and Tuesday
nights. Join the chorus, join the band.
(Take your instrument!) You meet womyn at the P.Orta-janes (the cleanest
portable facilities I have ever experienced). Topless womyn, naked womyn, fully clothed (ab, c'mon) womyn .. . (It has been a wonderful
experience for me to be topless around
7500 lesbians and not have one bad incident or comment made - except from
my camping buddettes - thanks,
friends.) And, you meet womyn in line
for the showers. Now, here you can't be
shy. The showers are open-air and
hung off a swingset frame (one shower
does have a curtain around it). When
you are about fifth in line, you strip naked and with soap, washcloth, and
shampoo in band, wait for your turn.
(yea!)
Music starts on Wednesday. (This is
why you may want a watch.) Music on
the Day Stage starts at noon; music on
the Acoustic Stage starts at 4:00 p.m.;
music on the Night Stage starts at 8:00
.m. (Music and womyn? When I die,
want to go to Michigan!)

ened, stands sell ice cream, coffee, sodas, donuts. (Personally, while on my
parking shift in the RV area, I begged
fresh meat from some kind-hearted womyn. If you look as pathetic as I did,
it works.)
For your friends who have been unfortunate enough to be left at home, the
Crafts area provides a place to purchase
souvenirs. What a wonderful place to
go and find incredible things made by
talented, loving, friendly, happy womyn.
What have I forgotten? The Chorus
W omyn singing - their voices drifting
through the trees? Mozart on woodwinds floating in the air? The sound of
womyn playmg volleyball? Laughter
(last year I was surprised at the fact that
I didn't hear ANY arguments)? And,
last year I awoke one morning at about
3:00 a.m. to the sound ofwomyn who
were, obviously, going home. The were
singing "Leaving On a Jet Place". After
a few lines, they started laughing. And
then they broke into a chorus of
"You've Got a Friend" ...
And, then, there is Jan from Seattle.
There are Jennifer and Heather from
Toledo. Katie is from Boston. Mary is
from Ireland, lives in London and is
staying in New Jersey for a couple of
months. Jackie is from Champaign, Illinois. Janet (ob, I love Janet) is from
Rhode Island. Rhonda is from Madison, Wisconsin and never knew I
wanted to marry her.
And, damn, now I'm crying. Because I
miss it. But, I know that somewhere,
even now, near Hart, Michigan on 623
acres ofland, the wind is fairly bursting
with the loving sounds of womyn their laughter and their music and their
voices. I know. Because Michigan is
magic.

The Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas:
The Allan G. Calkin Fund, the research and education
branch of the Lesbian/Gay Rights LobbY. of Texas, has issued a statewide call for resumes to bmld the pool of potential candidates for appointments to state boards and commissions.
Dennis Vercher, editor of the Dallas Voice, recalled the
night of Feb. 4, 1988 when Deb and other members of Lesbian Visioniaries christened him and two other gay men
(Bill Hunt, and Don Baker) as "Honorary Lesbians" for
their unfailing support of the lesbian community of Dallas.
Dennis said that he was really happy to receive the award...
primarily because as a lesbian he would be able to have multiple orgasms .. . and he was extremely disappointed that it
didn't work! Deb responded, "Oh, I'm so sorry, Dennis, did
. we forget to tell you about the candles? Every lesbian knows
that you must have candles to have multiple orgasms!"
During her term of office, Governor Ann Richards will make
over 4,000 appointments to state boards and commissions
which regulate everything from the statewide university systems to the coordination of statewide health care. Persons
appointed to these boards and commissions set public policy
and are considered appointed state officials. It 1s imperative
for lesbian/gay people to be appointed to a significant number of these government posts.
Until next month .... keep your candles burning!
A list of appointments important to the lesbian/gay community has been sent to LGRL members across the state. Additional copies of this list will be made available at LGRL
events and at interested lesbian/gay businesses. If you are
interested in a state board or commission, if your business

Natalie Clifford Barney, was born October 31, 1876 in Dayton, Ohio, but lived most of her life in Paris. Natalie Barney
is probably one of the two most famous lesbians of all time
and certainly the most notorious. She was rich (worth about
a billion dollars by today's standards), talented, outspoken,
witty, intelligent, free-thinking, free loving, and downright
outrageous! Barney mocked heterosexuals, particularly men,
and was an outspoken feminist since childhood. Two of Natalie's favorite targets for attack were marriage and religion.
Original sin to her way of thinking was not all that "origmal"
and she "hoped that all those "right thinking" Christians
could be replaced by people who think, presumably for
themselves. ' (Hear! Hear!)
"Df D had one ambition, it was to

make my life itself into a poem."
Natalie Clifford Barney
Natalie Barney had many, many affairs with well known
women (Renee Vivien, Dolly Wilde, Romaine Brooks)
throughout her long life. She was still attractive to women
and sexually active in her late seventies when she began an
affair that lasted until she died in 1972 at the age of96 years.
In fact, Romaine Brooks broke off her relationship with 70+
year old Natalie because of Natalie's roving eye.

Jewelle Gomez was a double winner at this year's annual
Lambda Literary Awards. Her first novel, The Gilda Stories,
won for both Lesbian Fiction and Lesbian Science Fiction/
Fantasy.
Gomez's lesbian vampire heroine strides across time listening to the sounds of the world and trying to add her own
voice. She learns that immortality is not sunple. The Girl, a
runaway slave, meets Gilda, a white female who could talk
without speaking. They meet at night in the root cellar of the
farmhouse that Gilda owns and where the Girl is hiding.
"Woodard's was the most prosperous establishment in the
area and enjoyed the patronage of some of the most esteemed
men and women of the country. Gilda employed eight girls,
none yet 20, who lived in the house and worked hard liours
being what others imagined women should be.11
Gilda is a vampire. She is also the madam of a brothel in
Louisiana, circa 18 50, and has an Indian female lover named
Bird. Bird manages the house and teaches the Girl to read
in English and French. Then Gilda offers the Girl the life of
a vampire, not that the word is ever spoken. They, Bird and
Gilda, choose the Girl as their "daughter.11 Then Gilda leaves
for the true death. "She asked to rest, free from the intemperate demands of time. Often she'd tried to explain this burden to Bird, the need to let go." And so, with the true death
for Gilda, the Girl is named Gilda and her adventures begin!
Gilda travels to San Francisco of the l 890's to stay with Sorel
at his hotel that has gambling rooms. Here she meets "family," for Sorel and his lover Anthony are also vamrires and
have much to teach her. Gilda meets the beautifu Eleanor
who bewitches all she meets for the thrill ofit. Eleanor lives
through deception and the thrill of conquest. Gilda is a challenge, an equal and a mystery to Eleanor. They have trips
to the dressmaker and opera and to Mt. Tamalpa1s and a final
power struggle that is not to be missed.

Book Review continued
This is my favorite section of the book. I loved all the people
she meets, especia~ly Toya, a young hooker whom she helps
escape from he~ violent and abusive P.imp. Gilda and Bird
are finally reuruted after decades of bemg separated: "Gilda
closed her eyes, not thinking of Bird's rejection years before
but of the woman who had loved them both, who'd brought
!hem together, then !,lken the true dea!~-" Their love making
1s very tender_. magical and mental. <11lda and Bird do succeed m rescuing the young Toya, but I don't want to give
away how, just that it is very exciting and takes a lot of energy to fight another vampire - an evil one!
Then we have Gilda working in an off Broadway theater in
I ~71 with more interesting people from the theater world.
Gilda finally creates a "brother" for herself and Bird, Sorel
and Anthony. We then move on to New York of 1981 with
very contemporary lesbians, with Gilda writing songs. Fi~ally, we fast forward to two places in the future on this contment.
So many stories, so many people, sure to be a favorite novel
f~r pe~ple wh~ enjoy an excellent read. For those who enjoy
h1stoncal ~tones, _con~t:mporary and futuristic stories, this
novel has 1t all with Gilda as the "thread" that holds it all
together. I highly recommend The Gilda Stories. What a
wonderful character Gilda is, a black lesbian vampire with
heart and conscience that I wish "mortals" had!

Dec. 2-6, 1992
Pauline Bart, one of the founding mothers of university
Women's Studies and a tenured full professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago,
is no longer allowed to teach courses in Sociology or
Women's Studies because of an informal complaint made by
one male student. The student charged "sexual harrassmeot"
when Professor Bart confronted him with the fact that other
students had stopped coming to her Gender and Society class
because he intimidated the women and verbally abused other
students, claiming that rape and incest do not exist. The University is pressurmg Professor Bart to take early retirement.
Dallas held its first Lesbian and Gay film festival in 1990
but the festival fell through the cracks in 1991. A small inexperienced committee has formed and we are determined
to bring some excellent films to Dallas for this year's festival.
Because of homophobia from many theaters and the high
cost of theater rental, we will transform the Dallas Gay and
Lesbian Community Center at 2701 Reagan into our very
own theater for this event. Volunteers are urgently needed:
<T I. to help write descriptions of the film selections for the
program;
<T 2. to sell advertising in the film festival program;
er 3. to help secure donations of flowers and concession
items;
<T 4. _to distribute_ flyers about the festival and film programs
at maJor community events;
<T 5. to distribute flyers, posters, and programs at businesses
clubs, and community centers in the D/FW area;
<T 6. to help with creating, writing, and distribution of press
releases and advertising;
er 7. to represent the film festival at local clubs: to conduct
drawings, raffles, etc. to give away free passes to the festival
as a means of advertising the event;
<T 8. to take tickets, work concessions, and clean up during
the five days of the festival;

[Ed. note: The following press release is from the Conference for Catholic
Lesbians regarding the Vatican letter to U.S. Bishops released June 25th.
The Vatican letter recalls and reiterates passages from a similar document
issued in 1986 and states. among other things. that "the proper reaction to
crimes committed against homosexual persons should not he to claim that
the homosexual rnndition is not disordered. When such a rlaim is made and
when homosexual activity is consequently condoned. or when civil legislation is introduced to protfft behavior to which no one has any conceivable
right. neither the C'hurch nor society at large should be .surprised when other
distorted notions and practices gain ground. and irrational and violent reactions increase." The letter goes on to state that since homosexuality is "intrinsical~y disordered". the state has the right to restrict the rights of homosexuals just as it does with the mentally ill - "to protect the common
good". The letter also states, "There are areas in which it is not unjust discrimination to take sexual orientation into account, for example. in the consignment of children to adoption or foster care. in employment of teachers
or coaches. and in military recruitment."

As of this writing, the Seventh Day Adventist Church does
not allow gays or lesbians to have membership in their denomination. I'm gay, and for twenty years they were happy
to have me among them. Now, they are outraged I would
even be at church.

The Conference for Catholic Lesbians
Saddened by the Vatican's Anti-Gospel
Values
The pastor of the church called me. He would have been okay
if after the first forty minutes of the conversation, he would
have just said goodnight. But being a man, he just couldn't
accept my arguments with grace, so he kept on going. Most
Seventh Day Adventists are shy, retiring, non-aggressive
types. I wasn't born adventist, I have some worldly notions
and I honestly don't know many lesbians of my age who
aren't used to demonstrations and fighting for their Rights.
The Collective for the Conference for Catholic Lesbians
stands in strong opposition to the June 26, 1992 Vatican
document, informing U.S. Bishops of their obligation to actively discriminate against homosexuals.
Some of his arguments: If I am an Adventist, I wouldn't be
gay. Ifl wanted to stay an Adventist, I would stop being gay
and stay away from Kinship. [SDA Kinship is the gay/lesbian
group of Seventh-Day Adventists.]
This request of Bishops, coming from the office of the General Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the
Faith, is blatantly anti-Gospel because it actively promotes
discrimination and violence against homosexuals. This sanctimonious document exemplifies the writing of a person or
persons filled with internalized hatred and self-loathing. It
clearly demonstrates both a dysfunctional and irrational
thinking process and systems. A system which is unable to
utilize the clear scientific data indicating that homosexuality
is not disordered.
My reaction is one of shock. I am hurt, but at least I've
stopped wanting to poof the whole SDA Church into oblivion. Now I'm just happy I don't have to go in drag anymore.
If I go back to the straight SDA Church, I'll go in my suits,
and damn the heels. The battle is lost; but, one battle does
not a war make. I will win back my membership in the SDA
Church. What makes it so important to me? I am an Adventist. I believe in their principles. I believe I have a Right to
worship God, be gay, be an Adventist, and be ME!
{For in[ormation ahout SDA Kinship, call Rustie, the
Womens Coordinator, at (214) 360-0374.]
It becomes clear that the fundamentalist Fascist regime has
begun to disguise itself under the pretense of Religion. It
seems significant to us, in this election year, in this time of
numerous ethical and moral dilemmas, that we must not
waste our precious energies and time on such clearly AntiChristian teachings. We must not allow ourselves to be
scapegoats for a political showdown.
JUDITH CANNON, PH.D.
We call on Catholics to be wary of such seduction. We must
double our justice seeking efforts and urge our friends and
family members to express their reject10n of these false
teachmgs. As stated in the Vatican II letter of 12/7/65, Chapter 2, No. 26, "We accept that all persons have the right to
food, clothing, housing ... the right to act according to the dictates of conscience ... and rightful freedom, even in matters
of Religion". It seems unfortunate that the Vatican is so
clearly unable to see the right side of justice.

King, therapist Ila Davies and Rev. Brenda Hunt of Agape MCC in Fort Worth not only gave us some excellent information
about menopause, but also entertained us with a lively and enjoyable presentation. We are grateful to Rev. Brenda Hunt for
filling in for Rev. Carol West who was called out of town on an emergency. Rev. Hunt had very short notice, but cheerfully
drove from Fort Worth in heavy traffic to assist us. Thanks a million, Brenda!
Panelists at the September
11th Share the Vision meeting were (I. tor.) Dr. Karen
King, Ila Davies, and Rev.
Brenda Hunt.
Some of the things we learned at this meeting on menopause are:
1. Find a woman doctor and ask her lots of questions.
2. Find out the facts about menopause and treatments for menopausal sym_ptoms for yourself.. .there are lots of good sources
for information including books, and free pamphlets (drop a note to Visionaries or call the LIL line (214) 528-2426, and
we will send you a resource list).
3. Are you suffering from P.M.S.? Call the P.M.S. Access Hotline, l-800-222-4PMS.
4. You may develop P.M.Z. after menopause ...that's Post Menopausal Zest - a new positive outlook on life and more involvement in your world during the last third of your life.
Note to Readers: Visionaries constantly receive letters and phone calls from lesbians wanting to know the names, addresses,
and phone numbers of lesbian and/or lesbian-sympathetic female doctors in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. If you know of any
such doctors who would like referrals of lesbian patients, please call Paula at (214) 406-9123. Thanks.
Letters
with the review. I'm sure that they were used because they
were convenient, but they're misleading. On one side was the
drawing of an electric guitar, even though an electric guitar
appears only on one song on the entire recording. The graphic
of a woman on the other side is objectionable. As a feminist,
one of the things that angers me is the image of the "perfect
woman" that is so often presented in the media. We are all
supposed to be thin, have big breasts, and wear high heels
-- Just like the woman in the picture. In reality, we come in
all sizes and shapes and that's one of the things I sing about.
So, it's particularly ironic that this graphic appears in conjunction with a review of my recording.
I'm sorry if all of this seems harsh. I really do appreciate that
you published a favorable review, but I felt that it was important that I say something I felt so strongly about. This is
not a negative comment on your publication. Thanks for taking the ttme to consider my concerns.

from our readers ...
Dear Visionaries,
Thank you for publishing the review ofmy latest recording,
"Center of Balance." [August, 1992} It always helps our tiny
lesbian-positive company when reviews are written about our
recordings. I'm happy that Brimm, the reviewer, enjoyed
"Center of Balance.'
There are, however, a few inaccuracies in the review. It
states, "'Center of Balance' speaks of many lesbian experiences, from love to lust." That's a rather limited range -- the
recording is also about anger, humor, happiness, and so much
more! For instance, there's "No Closet", a gay/lesbian coming
out song. "All of Me" is a humorous song about body image,
and "Looks Can Kill" is also about body image but it's presented seriously.
I'm glad that Brimm enjoyed "Loretta and Bernadine." However, the women in the story may not have been lovers as
Brimm states. The song is a true story about someone in my
family . Nowhere in the song do I say that they are lovers,
just that they lived together for many years. Simply, they are
family to each other and that has many meanings. Of course,
I'd be delighted if they had been lovers, but I don't know that
for sure.
Another thing that concerns me are the graphics included

as other parts of the country. Your dedication is wonderful
