BRIDGING THE GAP - ERASING THE HATE
ISLAMIC SOCIETY OF TULSA TO BE FEATURED AT
SPECIAL COMMUNITY EVENING OF UNDERSTANDING
As our nation prepares for war against an enemy that has yet to be seen, there are
many groups of people who have come face to face with their enemies. The Islamic community, as well as other religious minorities across our country, have recently been victims
of fear out of backlash after the attacks in NYC and Washington, DC.
Ms. Sheryl Siddiqui with the Islamic Society of Tulsa will be the featured guest speaker
at a special community awareness program Tuesday, October 16 beginning at 7:00 PM at
the Tulsa GLBT Community Center.

TOHR MEMBERSHIP MEETING
TUESDAY: OCTOBER 9 SPECIAL TIME: 7:00 PM
The TOHR monthly membership meeting, open to the general public, is
scheduled for Tuesday, October 9th, at the Tulsa Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgender (GLBT) Community Center, 2114 S Memorial, beginning at 7:00 PM.
The Tulsa Vegetarian Society (TVS) and Northern Oklahoma Animal Helpers (NOAH) will present a special program featuring the award winning film
"The Witness." The mission of TVS and NOAH is to educate persons about
the health and ethical reasons for vegetarianism.
"The Witness" tells the story of Eddie Lama, a construction contractor from
a tough Brooklyn neighborhood who grew up in a family that had an aversion

to animals. With humor & sincerity, Eddie describes his step-by-step journey
to compassion, from the unexpected love a kitten who opened his heart, to the
shocking undercover video footage that motivated him to invent a wholly new

REMEMBER
comes to hate speech.
Tulsa has seen the effects of the attacks firsthand. A
Pakistani man was recently beaten in Broken Arrow.
There have been numerous similar situations happening
across the city. Meanwhile, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson blame the attacks, among other groups, on the GLBT
community.
The GLBT community and the Islamic community may
at first glance not have much in common. But recent
events show us the ignorance, hate and fear not only in the
minds of the attackers but also in the minds of those who
tell them what to think.
The evening will include remarks from Ms. Siddiqui and
a discussion on possible ways to educate and help out
each other, not only in times of crisis and disaster - but
ways we can all work together everyday of the year.

GETTING THE WORD OUT!
HAVE SOMETHING GOING ON?
GET IT UP ON THE BOARD
Ever have an event and no one showed up? That
doesn't have to happen again!
The Tulsa Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgender (GLBT)
Community Center not only has the space for individuals
and organizations to meet or hang out - it also has the
means to get the word out!
Simply bring down your posters, roommate wanted
signs, business advertisements, etc. , leave them at the
TOHR office and they'll be put up on The Board.
NEW & IMPROVED,
TOHR BY-LAWS GET FACELIFT
TOHR membership voted and passed the proposal to
improve the by-laws of the organization at the September
membership meeting (the meeting was delayed one week
due to recent events).
Beginning January 2002, the terms of the Board of
Directors will be two years on a rotating basis. The offices
of the President, 2nd Vice President and Treasurer will be
selected one year while the 1st Vice President and Secretary will be selected the following year. The exception to
this will be this coming year when all Executive Committee positions will be elected.
Additionally, the by-law revision created the "Board
Development Committee,· chaired by a board member,

DEMOCRAT RESOLUTIONS
HIGHLIGHTING THE ISSUES
AFFECTING THE GLBT COMMUNITY
Last month, TOHR began a focus on the various political parties in the Tulsa area and where they stand on
GLBT related issues.
That focus will continue in the next edition of
"Community News· and will cover the Tulsa County Democratic Party.
So, tune back in.

A GLBT BOOTH AT THE
TULSA STATE FAIR?
It almost happened this year. It can happen next year.
TOHR and other local orgs want to have a presence at the
2002 Tulsa State Fair.
What better way to educate people. What better way
to show Tulsa that the GLBT Community is everywhere!
If you would like to help begin the organizing of a
GLBT Community Tulsa State Fair Booth for 2002, please
contact TOHR at 918.743.4297.

TAP INTO TOHR
PROVIDING THE RESOURCES
THE GLBT COMMUNITY MUST HAVE
The caller on the other end of the GLBT Information
Line was a 16 year old youth. He'd accepted the fact that
he's Gay and has come out to his parents.
However, his father had told him " •.. you'll never
amount to anything. Faggots never do."
The vouth then called the GLBT Information Une. a
program of TOHR. to get Information to help himseN
out as well as to hopefully educate his father.
He got the information he needed. Information in
hand, he will be able to confront his father with the truth
about his sexuality. That may begin the process of understanding for not only for the youth, but for his family.
Membership in Tulsa Oklahomans for Human Rights
(TOHR) makes sure the GLBT Information Line is there for
the next caller - whatever the situation.
Membership in TOHR enables the Tulsa GLBT Center to remain open. Open for the next visitor who lust
needs someone to talk too.
Membership in TOHR gives the GLBT Community a
voice. A voice that is heard by local leaders.
