November 8,1988 is a turning point for our country and community. Apathy is the best
word to describe the feelings of most voters concerning this election, but the long range
problems facing our community and this country will slam head-on into the next
President as soon as he takes office.
I was told recently by a close friend of mine,"I have never voted with the gay vote. It
doesn't matter that much as long as it doesn't affect my job or my life."
Honey,1'm here to tell you,it matters. The nextPresident will select atleasttwoS upreme
Court Justices and the long range effect oftheir decisions will affect oiu"community and
civil rights far into the next century. Anyone who believes things willjust go on justlike
they always have is dead wrong.
Although I won't deny that there are other issues to consider, it is my belief that this
election has the potential to affect our lives as women and lesbians right where it counts,
in the job market.
Below are listed some of the stands each party has made in regard to lesbians and gays
right ,as pubhshed by the Human Rights Campaign Fund headquatered in Washington,
D.C.
Republican
No mention oflesbian and gay civil rights. Rejected endorsement ofPresidential AIDS
Commission.Callsfor research, compassion and expedited FDA drug review. Also calls
for "protect(ing) those who do not have the disease," AIDS education that emphasizes
"abstinence from drug abuse and sexual activity outside of marriage" and confidential
testing and contacttracing. Advocates that people"remain on thejob or in school as long
as they are functional and capable."
Democratic
Calls for lesbian and gay civil rights and the "rebuilding"ofthe civil rights enforcement
machinery. AIDS planks call for"increased supportfor expedited research on treatments
and vaccines, comprehensive education and prevention, compassionate patient care,
adoption of public health community consensus on voluntary and confidential testing
and counseling, and protection of the civil rights of those suffering from AIDS,AIDS
Related Complex or testing positive for the HIV antibody."
Just one more note: the most frightening thing I see happening concerns paid
political commercials. People believe everything those damn commercials say. Don't,
believe all the paid commercials you see on TV. Look beyond the tube for your
information on these candidates. One ofthe bestsourcesforresearch is a paper published
by The League Of Women Voters. It covers the candidates and their stand on the issues.
I strongly urge you to pick up a copy and read it. Their number is in the White Pages of
most city phone directories. In larger cities, your Gay Alliance or similar organization
may also publish a report on the candidates. Check with them,if they don't publish such
information, they should be able to direct you on where to find it. - Roxanne Hunter

Give her time! Every once in a while,I

Anytime I went anywhere,it was ques

I knew there had to be something. One

CONFUSED!
Dear Confused,
Obviously your friend wants to control
your life, tell you who to see and in what
capacity to see them. But she does not
wantto make a commitment, due to fear
of her family finding out she's lesbian.
It was no coincidence that in the begin
ning of your relationship, she played
head games with you each time you got
too close (emotionally). Some people
major in head games all their lives and
your friend sounds like a good candi
date. If somebody gets too close they
change the rules.
The best way to handle people that play
head games is to stay away from them

Though she describes her act as being

Medicinal Poison
We don't wash our own clothes
or clean out our own closets
Instead we bloody our neighbors laundry
and snoop in their hidden secret places
Stabbing others with vulgar innuendo
and derogatory jokes
Slowly injecting poison into
the veins and minds of others
Squeezing out the crimson blood
with such passionate hatred
So our own lives seem more pure
The water mixes with the blood
into a rust-colored medicine
We give it to our children
protecting them from others' disease
The elixir becomes saturated
with malice, hatred and prejudice
Medicine turns to poison
killing our society
Serving as ammunition for wars
and dirt for our graves.

to start on a new course in your career
during the first week of November. Do it!
It could mean a major advance on the job as
well as around the house! From the 9th thru
the 16th, you will have a tendency to
overdo things at work, your over-enthusi
asm may not be appreciated by your co-
workers. You may have gotten in over your
head at work from the 17th thru the 23rd
and it will take all your time to catch up.
Don't make any now commitments or you
may have to break them in order to keep on
schedule. From the 24th thru the 30th you

your friends and family, although this ad

Although you may feel a romantic attach

of November,it is best not to act on itright
away, you may do or say something you
regret later. The best way to stay out of
trouble from the 9th thru the 16th is to
concentrate on your work; otherwise, you
may be tempted to spend too much money
or get yourself involved in a sticky social
situation. Take care with your words from
the 17th thru the 23rd, a slip of the mouth
could give someone you don't care for
ammunition against you. From the 24th

some distress or gossip that is currendy
circulating, don't try to stop it. Someone
who cares for you wiU come to your defense

The first week of November finds you
living it up on the social scene.Take advan
tage of it now because work will have you
tied up for the rest of the month. From the
9th thru the 16th, you may find yourself
loaning money to a friend in order to help
with a crisis. Don't preach about how it s
spent, they know better than you where it s
needed. From the 17th thru the 23rd, you
will need to set a goal and work towards it
