the times really are a changing!
Remember the first time you saw and read a lesbian book? Chances are it
was in the 1970s or early 1980s and it was published by a small independent press like Naiad Press. It could have been Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita
Mae Brown or Curious Wine by Katherine Forrest. Thirty years ago, you
_ __.
would have had to go to a lesbian or gay
THlil.i\l'IDl'!AM BESTSt;Ltlm&¥ bookstore to find these books. Herland was
M ltlf
one of those bookstores that sprang up beI\llll r~ IJIJ\JV,VU cause of a need that was not being filled by
mainstream bookstores. We then evolved
quickly into more than just a bookstore.

But times are a changin' as the saying goes.
There are gay & lesbian studies sections at
many major bookstore chains and lesbian literature can be ordered online as well. Herland has had dwindling book sales for the last
five years or more. So we would like your
_
opinion. What do you think we should do in
terms of carrying books for sale? Should we
continue to do so or use that space for something else? And what about CDs and other
merchandise? Herland has actually sold more
CDs than books over the last few years. We carry music by local artists
that is still a bit more difficult to get elsewhere. We also stock a small
amount of Pride merchandise and Herland t-shirts, mugs, recipe books,
and a few other items .

herland backyard picnic & games
?~$
The Annual Herland Pride Picnic was more or less
rained out in June. So, to make up for the wash out,
we are going to try it again. Herland will host a Fam-
ily Backyard Picnic on Saturday, August 11,
at 7 pm. (This will also take the place of the monthly
Supper Club held at a restaurant). We will cook up lots
of hotdogs and hamburgers and provide the drinks.
You bring a side dish to share with others. We will be
playing bocce ball, badminton, and ping pong. Bring
any other outdoor games you might want to play. And,
of course, if it is raining, we will move indoors again!
special election
Oklahoma County Commissioner Jim Roth was recently appointed to the
State Corporation Commission by Governor Brad Henry. A special election is
being held to fill Roth's position for the remainder of the 4-year term. (Roth
was the first openly gay person to be elected to office in Oklahoma.) In what
is proving to be a very interesting election, numerous folks, including several
veteran politicians, are vying to fill the spot. The list includes Debbie
Blackbum, Willa Johnson, and Ann Simank for the Democrats and Forrest
Claunch for the Republicans. Remember to vote in the primaries on Tuesday,
August 14, and the general election on Tuesday, September 11.
other activities?
Herland is planning for the coming months and would like to find out if you,
the community, are interested in certain activities. Some of the ideas include
a monthly or bi-monthly Drum Circle, a Once-a-Month Music Coffeehouse, a
monthly Writer's Circle where you would bring works to read, a Gender &
Sexuality Book Club. If any of these sound interesting to you, please drop us
an email at herland@herlandsisters.org and let us know. Or suggest
something totally different. We will plan based on the feedback we get.
