AN OUTREACH TO MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OFF AMILY OFF AITH MCC
RAIN TRAINING
I am once again making a plea for
more volunteers to take the time to
take the RAIN Training classes to be
held January 13, 14 & 15 from 5:30
P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Please preregister by January 10th by calling
the Regional AIDS Interfaith
Network at 749-4195. There will be
limited seats available. They will also
tell you the location of this training
session.
Our R.AiTNTeam has been an
active part of this church since its'
beginning and because of members
moving out of state or suffering
from burn-out, we are down to
seven team members, just barely
enough to take on a new client. A
healthy team should have about
fourteen members to avoid bum-out
or being overactive with a client.
Please be reassured that no one is
asked to do anything that they feel
uncomfortable doing. I cannot begin
to express how strongly you are
needed in this area. There is about a
six month waiting list for clients
wanting or needing a RAIN Team.
The short time requested of you
weekly or bi-weekly makes a really
big difference in a client's day. Just
knowing that someone cares. And
hugs don't spread AIDS!

SPOTLIGHT ON THE SOUTHCENTRAL DISTRICT
COORDINATOR,
REV.ELEANOR NEALY
The Rev. Eleanor Nealy has been an
active member of the UFMCC since
1983. She has been active in the MCC
New York congregation for the past
several years. She has been employed
secularly as the Director of Project
Con.1ecl(a drug and alcohol program)
at the Lesbian and Gay Community
Services Center. As Chair of the Spiritual Development Committee, she has
proven to be an excellent organizer,
facilitator, and administrator, as well
as a gifted teacher. Her pastor, the Rev.
Pat Baumgardner, shares with us that
Eleanor's understanding of the spiritual and emotional needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans-gender
community, coupled with her pastor's
heart and skills as a counselor, have
made her an exceptional leader both at
the church and in the wider community. She has also served the District as
a member of the District Clergy Review Committee and the new Board of
Ordained Ministry (BOM). Prior to her
membership and staff work at MCC
New York, Eleanor served as the solo
pastor of MCC Christ the Liberator in
New Jersey. Her skills in the pulpit and
classroom reveal a person of tremendous insight, wisdom and vision.
Join Rev. Eleanor Nealy and the
congregation for a special even on
Saturday, January 11th!

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
by Nancy M.
Driving home from Claremore a few weeks ago, I suddenly realized that I couldn't remember
crossing the Kerr-McKleelan waterway bridge. I was suddenly in Catoosa, with no idea how I had
gotten there. While I'm sure that I'm not the only person that this has happened to, this was the first
time that I couldn't remember anything! The experience was therefore a little frightening (was I really
that deep in thought, or was I simply comatose - while driving? ), and more than a little disorientating.
Where was I? What time was it? Did I need to stop for gasoline? After re-orientating myself, I started
to consider how, as a child, I enjoyed looking out the back window of the car on the long family
vacations that we used to take. I can remember thinking that it was more important to know where I
had been, than to see where I was going. I don't think that those thoughts were that "deep" for the
child that I was, I think that I might have wanted to tell my little friends that yes, "I had been to
Oregon"! However, as adults, I think that we may put too much importance on planning and dreaming
of where we are going, instead of remembering and learning from where we have been. The past is the
only thing that we can truly learn our lessons from, the only thing that can lead us through the flux of
the present to the future that we desire. As Christians, we not only have our personal past to draw our
lessons from, we have a biblical past to tum to also. By reading the bible, we have the lessons of
Jesus' life experiences and the lessons of his parables to guide us into our future. We can also tell our
friends that yes, " We have been to Bethlehem"!
( Note: I hope to continue this "column" on a periodic (spasmodic ?) basis. If you have any ideas
that you'd like to see discussed, please tell me or Nancy C.)
