Dear Agaes
Answers to your questions about love,
RELATIONSHIIPS & PERSONAL PROBLEMS
Dear Agnes,
This isn't the kind of problem you usu
ally deal with — but here it is anyway.
Three months ago I gota promotion and
suddenly I am overwhelmed. In fact,
I'm beginning to wonder if I can even
handle this job.
I don't have a degree and I am wonder
ing if my big mouth has gotten me in
over my head.
There are not enough hours in the day to
handle everything I have to do at the
office. I have very little time or energy
left over to take care of things at home,
and absolutely no time for romance.
My lover has been very patient so far,
but I know there is a limit(and I think
I'm about to reach it).
I am working very long hours and my
department is still in a mess. Now I'm
wondering if I am making my home life
if you failed).
For starters, if you aren't a list maker,
become one. List all your jobs — both
big and small — and assign them a
number of priority. This doesn't mean
your list will be gone everyday, but it
will help you focus on what needs to be
done. It will also help you to see what
you have accomplished.
Second — don't work late everyday.
Take offatleastone—preferably two—
days per week at 5pm. Do this whether
or not you have everything done.Work
ing extended days with no relief is the
best way I can think of to bum out.
Third—beon the lookout for a"second
lieutenant". There is someone in your
department who wants more responsi
bility — find out who it is and delegate
some of your work to them. This is
probably one ofthe hardest things in the
world to do if you are a supervisor, but
a mess too.
Do you have any suggestions on how to
manage all this? I don't want to be one
of those women who has her job and
it is essential if your are going to man
age a whole department.
Fourth — (but very important) don't
ignore romance. In fact, you should

Dear Overwhelmed,
where or how you get to that point.
Anytime you start running a depart

Obviously you are cut outfor the job or
you wouldn't have been promoted.Your
boss wouldn't have taken a risk on you
if she/he didn't think you could do the

You will be able to manage. It may take

Part VI1
BY NANCY FORD
"What time did they say your car would be done?"Bianda glanced at the clock on her dashboard
and then at the sea of traffic that lay motionless before them.
"It's done now. Alllhavetodo is fork over $431 and drive away.Priscilla stood up,jxikingher
head through the sunroof. Fortunately for them both, it was already ojjen."1 really appreciate the
ride. Especially at this time ofday.I owe you one."She slid back down into her seat."Just tell me
one thing — how can what started out to be a simple tune-up and oil-change suddenly turn into
a $431 major overhaul?
"Why do you think they call the place 'Ya'll Time and Lube'l Bianda twisted the cap off the
bottle ofsparkling fruitjuice she had purchased before getting on the freeway. Having lived in the
metro area for more than a decade,Bianda knew better than to venture into 5 o'clock traffic without
something to drink and something to read, preferably a tabloid, or the latest issue of"On Our
Backs." Remarkably, the magazines shar^ a similar effect on her — one of clandestine
amusement."Want something to drink?"
Four hundred and thirty ONE dollars! Four hundred thirty-one." Priscilla was in her own little
world now,one devoid of all drink, food, or literary amusement."Amazing. It's like they know
exactly how much cash you have socked away for a Thanksgiving trip to Taos or Key West or
wherever.Simply amazing."She began to rage, jumping back up through the sunroof, waving her
arms in an aerobic flurry."Or maybe the amount — the maximum amount you think you re going
to have to pay — no, DOUBLE the maximum amount — automatically breaks out in little sweat
beads across my forehead in a code only mechanics can read." As she flailed away, the occupants
of the other cars, mutually stuck all around them, began to wave back. That's Priscilla — making
new friends wherever she goes.
"You're overreacting ..."Bianda took a swig of water."But then, if I just spent all my vacation
money getting lubed without getting kissed,I'd probably overreact, too ..."The car advanced two
furlongs, and stopped again."Why don't you see if they'll trade out for one of your kidneys?"Her
right foot was beginning to atrophy from inactivity. Giving up, she shifted into park and tumed
offthe ignition.Nopoint making thatozone hole any bigger than it already is—she thought. They
weren't going anywhere anytime soon.
"So get this —"Priscilla shouted from her outer-roof position. "I saw this show on TV about
Russian women who are looking for American husbands.
^
"American men to become their husbands, or American men who are Husbands?" Bianda
reached into the back seat and retrieved a copy of Weekly World Inquirer.
"Who knows? Who cares? The pointis, they showed this close-up ofone Russian woman.Pretty
woman, blonde. So she looks right into the camera, smiles, and says T vant Amedican man who
iss clever and who likes sex.' Do you believe this?"
"Did the program give a 1-900 number where viewers can call in and wish her lots of luck?"
Bianda checked the still motionless traffic before them, and went back to flipping pages.
"So, you know what I'm thinking?" —
"Almost always," Bianda replied,"But I almost never admit it."
"— I'm thinking that pretty soon all these clever American men who like sex will voluntarily
go offto the Soviet Union to satisfy those Soviet women.Do you know what that means?"Priscilla
swtmg back in beside Bianda, and swiped the bottle.
Page 24 • Dimensions •November 1991
"We're one step closer to helping them re-build their economy, strengthen east/west relations,
and promote global unity?"

No Well maybe. But, besides that, all the lesbian bars will suddenly overflow with these
'straight but'curious women whose ex-boyfriend and/or husband is getting glasnosted by a Baltic

'siaJida had no sooner finished an article about LaToya Jackson claiming to have met the Anti-
Christ than the cars in front of them tentatively inched forward. As she tumed the key the only
response was the click-click-click of what Bianda had come to recognize to be the fmal words of
a dead battery.
, . ,.
■ j, , •
"AAAUUUGGGHHH!THE CAR WON'T START!" PriscUla was slmeking, rapidly losmg
all the new traffic friends she had just made."IT S ME!I M CURSED!
"Turn the key again, this time it willstart."Bianda meditated, crossing her fmgers, toes, exudmg
all the positive energy she could from an aura she wasn't even sure she telieved she really had.
She pumped the accelerator twice, for luck, and twisted the key again. Click-click-click.
"IT'S ME'I'M A CAR KILLER!I HOPE YOU HAVE $431." As Priscilla's panic grew,so did
Bianda's serenity. Picking up the cellular phone cradled between them, she calmly dialed die
number of her auto club, and just as calmly communicated their location to the operator.Leaning
back with her magazine and her warm juice she welcomed the idea of not having to fight the traffic
'til the tow truck arrived. Let the traffic fight her for awhile.
Not more than 5 minutes had passed before Bianda detected flashing yellow lights in her rear
view mirror."Well, will you take a look at this?"
"Elvis is alive — I know,"Priscilla droned blankly staring into space, forehead pressed agamst
her window."Elvis is alive, and if he's really the King he owns controlling interest in all these
ragmags who only stay in business by printing stories about people who ve seen Elvis at Burger
King and movie theaters and —"
"No,Look!"Immediately an incredibly shiny red tow truck swung in front of Bianda's expired
vehicle, and slowly, slowly back up to within
inches of contact. The driver's door opened,
and above the din of the hom-blowing, ob
scenity-shouting motorists surrounding them,
if you listened very closely you could hear the
sound of another myth being shattered. In
stead of the stereotypical male high school
fj
drop-out with baggy bluejeans,sweaty grease-
stained T-shirt and a ZZ Top ball cap, Bi
anda's and Priscilla's rescuer was, well,none
of those things. Blue jeans, yes, but they
weren't baggy. T-shirt, yes, but it wasn't
grease stained. Bianda could only imagine it
sweaty. Ball cap, yes, but it crowned long,
saffron-colored hair that fellinto Bianda's car
and brushed her arm as the woman leaned into
her window.
"Need ajump?" the woman giinned as she
looked first at Bianda, then atPriscilla, then at
the pink triangle that dangled from the rearview mirror, and then back at Bianda.

The Lone
Star Women's
Music Festival
Imagine the perfect Texas autumn day.
Hot,clear skies and a light breeze. You
are in the Hill Country on a beautiful
spot beside a bend in the Guadalupe
River. The trees haven't really started
to turn yet, but you see a spot of color
showing here and there.
I was impressed with the diversity of
women that showed up for the event as
well as the wide range of musical styles
represented by the women performers.
There were women ofall ages,political
persuasions and varying stages of un
dress. The musicians ran the gamut

the rest of the performers were very
good and I heard few complaints about
any of the music.

worked hard to keep their areas clean (I
didn't even see any cigarette butts lying

showers wouldn't hurt.
The division of the campground into
chemical free, quiet and party areas
seemed to suit everyone and I heard no
restocking the bathrooms, helping
women through the parking lot, etc.).
The complaints weren't about having
to work, only about the fact that some
women didn't show up for their shift,
causing others to have to work eight
hours or more.
The cost of tickets to the festival were

POETRT
From Our Readers
AGAIN
My body trembles, uncontrollably
in your presence and
my soul becomes
yours for the taking.
Slow down, I hear myself whisper.
But my mind, again, refuses to obey.
I cast my eyes upon
your face
drinking all your striking,
captivating features.
Again, I seek restraint
from your physique, your control ...
but it is too late.
Your arms have enclosed me,
your lips brushed
briefly across mine.
Con you hear it. The thumping.
Again, my heart answers,
vigorously to you.

The Temiotst Perspective
A New Monthly Column From The Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby
Written By Laurie Eiserloh, Executive Director, LGRL
Agree? Or,disagree? — Send Your Comments To Dimensions.
I am certain that many of you have seen the media images of lesbian and gay protesters in
California smashing windows with bicycle racks and burning the California state flag in protest
of Governor Pete Wilson's veto of a lesbian and gay civil rights bill. These protests in the streets
are reminiscent of protests in Houston that the lesbian/gay community organized in response to
the killing of a gay man named Paul Broussard.
At the same time, we have all suffered through the Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill hearings and
a mass murder in Killeen perpetrated by a man who, according to the Houston Post, admittedly
committed the crime because he hated women. Every day we hear statistics about the number of
women mutilated by rape and domestic violence. A woman is raped every 6 seconds. Every 18
seconds a woman is beaten. The number one cause of injtiry to women in this country is domestic
violence. As lesbians and as feminists, why aren't we rioting in the streets? Why is the gay and
lesbian rights movement able to organize in response to violence and oppression against the
community while the feminist movement seems more apt at organizing pro-choice rallies
featuring Cybil Shephard? Where is Susan B. Anthony? Where is Gloria Steinhem? Where is the
women's rights movement when you need it?
The answer to this question is extremely complex: however,I think that part of the answer lies in
the development of both political movements. The feminist movement has made alotofimjxrrtant
social changes and still exists as a pxrlitical movement. However, much of the energy and creativity
of this movement can now be found in community discussion groups and college classrooms.
Rather than a shirking of pxalitical responsibility, this retreat to the classroom is a necessary stage
in the development offeminism. The primary issue that is being addressed within this new stage
ofthe feminist movement is this: ho w do werecognize differences in the women's movement while
maintaining a cohesive political movement? Feminism encompasses issues such as racial
oppression, class oppression, abortion, environmentalism, new definitions ofthe family, violence
against women, etc. With such a multiplicity of agendas, protests in the streets can be difficult to
organize. However, exclusionary politics nearly destroyed the feminist movement in the past. A
balance must be sought.
The lesbian/gay rights movement,on the other hand, has not moved as far along in the process of
recognizing diversity within our community. Although things are changing, the lesbian/gay rights
movement, to a large extent, is dominated by privileged(privileged primarily by race and class)
gay men. These leaders have made very positive changes, particularly in the fight against AIDS,
but there has been some refusal to recognize differences of sex, race, class, religion and ability
within our community. This refusal is exemplified by arguments such as whether the Dallas Gay
Alliance should be called the Dallas Gay/Lesbian Alliance. At the same time, the lesbian/gay
movementfocuses on amore narrow range ofissues—primarily AIDS,domestic partnership, and
violence issues. This focus enabled the Houston community to organize in response to the killing
of Paul Broussard and work for the passage of the state hate-crimes bill. While I'm not advocating
that feminists concentrate on a more narrow range of issues, some degree of focus may be
politically expedient.
Activists in the lesbian/gay rights movement and activists in the feminist movement have alot to
gain from working together and alot to leant from one another. As both women's rights advocates
and lesbian rights advocates,it is our community that must translate the enors ofboth movements
into the strengths of the coalition.
