THE ULTIMATE RETREAT
Herland's Fall Retreat at Lake Wister
State Park is the place to be over Labor
Day Weekend.
In the past month, this retreat grew
from three days to four, and from one
nationally acclaimed entertainer to two.
As in the past, check-in begins at 4
p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1. Check-out time
is noon, Monday, Sept 4, which means
one more whole day of fun and sistership.
Entertainment will be provided by
YOU Saturday afternoon if you participate in the Open Mic. The concert
Saturday night will feature one of the two
great national acts we have lined up: the
Therapy Sisters from Austin, TX, and
Ann Reed from Minneapolis, MN. There
will be another concert Sunday night.
The Therapy Sisters perform laboratory-tested, original songs oflove, anger
and conflict resolution. More McLean,
Gail Lewis and Lisa Rogers base their
practice on years of experience and introspection. Their songs convert mundane
situations into opportunities for selfactualization, leaving their audiences in
stitches.
It has been said that Ann Reed leaves
her audiences lying in their seat like
puddles of soft wax with her guitar work,
wit, lyrics, melodies and rich voice. An
outspoken romantic, Ann's voice has
been described as being rich with a
mellow sensuality, while her lyrics are
filled with the emotional content of
relationships. Ann's specialty is the 12string guitar, but she is equally at home
with a 6 -string.
One more day, one more concert, all
for the price of one retreat! Additional
meals will be provided at a cost of
$2.50. If you are just now sending in
your registration and you want a meal
ticket for the whole weekend, the total
cost for meals is $17.50. Please note that
all meals do not necessarily accommodate vegetarians. The reknowned potluck dinner will be held Saturday night
before the concert. We are in need of
volunteers to cook that weekend. Please

NATIONAL BRIEFS
Seattle's Human Rights Department
has "found probable cause" that membership policy of A AA Automobile
Club of Washington is discriminatory
on the basis of marital status. The
ruling was issued in a case brought by
Demian, a Seattle resident. The department ruled June 23 that the automobile
club discriminated against Demian when
it told him that his domestic partner
was ineligible for "associate membership." The low-cost associate membership is offered to spouses and dependents of "master members."
Demian is co-publisher I co-editor of
the national monthly newsletter "PARTNERS: The Newsletter for Gay and
Lesbian Couples." The case now proceeds to conference and conciliation, a
process whereby the department will
work with both partners to achieve a
just and equitable resolution to the
matter. If the conciliation fails, the city
attorney could file a suit against AAA.

The Human Rights Campaign Fund
(HRCF) has announced the appointment of two young gay and lesbian
leaders to its board of directors. Barbara S. Bernstein, recent graduate of
Stanford University, and Tad A. Gardocki, of Georgia State University, are
the first students to be elected to
HRCF's board under the organization's
new Young Leaders Internship Program.
Bernstein and Gardocki will serve
one-year internships on HRCF's 25member board of directors. The interns
will have full voting rights and will
share responsibilities with other board
members for governing the largest gay
and lesbian political organization in the
country. The interns will network and
fundraise to colleges and universities
and educate youth communities on gay
and lesbian issues. They also will participate in key HRCF political and legislative projects.
HRCF created the Young Leaders
Intern Program to establish strong leadership skills in the gay and lesbian movement and help educate and involve its
future leaders. For more information
on the program, contact HRCF at 1012
14th St. NW, Suite 607, Washington,
D.C. 20005, Attention: Young Leaders
Intern Program.
Contributions are being sought for
an anthology on survivors of rape. This
collection will focus on the continuing
ways rape changes women's lives, and
the problems, invisibility and devastating isolation survivors experience in a
society that expects us to be "over all
that" in a few months.
Survivors of stranger or acquaintance
rape and of all ages, abilities, class,
educational and ethnic backgrounds
and sexual preferences are encouraged
to contribute their stories. The deadline
for submission of stories is Nov. 1,
1989.

Meet the Board
MEET THE EXECUTIVE
EDITOR: SONDRA M.
By Karen Lewis
A national tabloid coined the phrase,
"inquiring minds want to know." The
inquiring mind of this month's featured
board member, Sondra M ., has been
beneficial to Herland.
Sondra has been working for the newsletter since 1988 and recently became the
executive editor and city news editor. She
credits an ex-lover with getting her interested in journalism.
"In 1987 I was involved with someone
who was majoring in journalism at
OSU," she said. "We talked about starting a weekly newspaper of our own. I felt
uncomfortable with this since I had no
journalism knowledge, and started taking
classes at Rose State. I'll graduate next
May. I think I've finally found my niche."
The 35 -year-old native Pennsylvanian
moved to Oklahoma in 1981 after graduating from the Art Institute of Ft.
Lauderdale. Although she has an associate's degree in photography, Sondra
follows a career in the computer field
4
HSR, AUGUST, 1989
that started in 1979. She presently works
as a network specialist in the city.
If you've seen Sondra at retreats or at
the Resource Center, there's a good
chance you've also seen the love of her
life, her dog Kelsie .
"Kelsie's well-being is an impo. rant
factor when it comes to scheduling my
time," she said. "Some people think I
pamper her too much . Maybe I do, but
she has given me an incredible amount of
joy. I've never met a dog like her. She's a
wonderful companion. She's also the
only female I will ever have in my life
with hair on her legs." (Never say never,
Sondra.)
When she first heard about Herland in
1982, she was disappointed. Every time
she went to the store, it was closed.
Herland's seeming unreliability and Sondra's own lack of understanding of what
Herland really was kept her away. Four
years later, she showed her lover the
store. Or tried to . On the first trip, it was
closed. The second trip was the charm.
The lover became a member of the board
and Sondra's involvement grew from
that. After their divorce, the lover left
Herland; Sondra stayed.
"I'm emotionally attached to Herland
now," she said. "I delight in her accomplishments and agonize over her defeats.
She's just a part of my daily life. I can see
how far Herland can go, but I can also see
that she lacks the necessary support to
get there. I'd like to see the newsletter
become a major publication and the
retreats become music festivals. But that
takes more money and volunteers, something we don't have. I'm grateful to those
who do donate their time and money.
What I'm saying is, when it comes time
to staff an event or the resource center,
it's always the same people. There are
individuals carrying the load of more
than two people. What's going to happen
to Her land if those people get burned out
around the same time?"
Sondra's passion for the newsletter
runs deep. Citing a strong desire to
inform and educate, Sondra credits the
newsletter as a factor in her decision to
join the board. She took over the editor's
position to give the editor a summer
break; but the editor doesn't want it
back.
"The newsletter is an instrument, a
voice, to spread the word," she said.
"When I look at material for the next
issue, I look for subjects that I think will
be of interest to 700 women. The newsletter is not there to reflect one woman's
opinion or the board's opinion. It's there
to inform all women. This is why our
readers ' input is so valuable. We don't
know what they want unless they give us
s.o me idea."
Sondra's wish list for Herland's future
includes a computer and printer with
desktop publishing capabilities ('' 'MACxine' would be a nice addition to the
newsletter staff" ), more reader input and
contributions to the newsletter, more
dedicated women involved in the operation of Herland and more funds to
maintain and grow. With everything Herland has going for her, Sondra can't
·· understand why more people don't want
to get involved.
"I get all my tidbits of information for
the newsletter from the Resource Center," she said. "There's always something
going on there, some piece of information
being said or read. Herland is one of the
few places that can give a woman a sense
of pride, an identity. It's a place where a
'second class' citizen in a male do'zy.inated
society has the opportunity to feel like
the first class citizen.she really is. It's also
a place where you can learn how to grovel
for money in 101 different ways."
Sondra thinks the best feature of Herland is the newsletter "Is that obj ~ctivity
or what?" because it reaches so many
women, with the retreats coming in a
close second.
Her answer to the last magical question
of all board member interviews, "What
does HSR mean to you?" was: "Herland
is safe, comfortable spat e to go to, to get
away from the real world for awhile. I'm
very protective of her and of the people
involved with her. It's an honor to be on
the board and to follow in the footsteps
of the women who have worked so dilligently to ensure her place within the
community. All of them were stubborn,
dynamic leaders and educators in their
own right. We have a lot of stubborn
women within Herland. If we didn't, we
wouldn't be here."
•
"Just as long as newspapers and
magazines are controlled by
men, every woman upon them
must write articles which are
reflections of men's ideas. As
long as that continues, women's
ideas and deepest convictions
will never get before the public."
Susan B. Anthony

the judicial process in this country

Marine Corps spends a whole year in
jail and is dishonorably discharged just
because the Marine Corps "suspected"
she was a lesbian. That's justice, all
