FALL RETREAT
... as the Army says, Rest and Relaxation ... or as Herland
says,RETREA.T!
A.re you ready? Have you picked out the book you're going
to spend hours reading outside on a blanket while strapping
young women play volleyball a short distance away? Or are you
the one ready to play volleyball and softball and badminton and
hike the hills ... Have you got your Potluck dinner planned?
Personally I can't decide between an old family recipe called Lost
Tamales
or
Grandma ' s Strawberry Pie ..
Iknowafewfolks
are staying in town in
a motel - in the Army
we'd call them
candybutts, but they
are pretty neat and fun
and I know we'll be
glad to have them.
Myself, I'm staying in
one of the cabins so I
can be as rowdy as
late as I like and not
have to worry about
driving anywhere (but

wake any early-to-bed
folks, I promise)
So far there are just two workshops planned.
Judith is
giving one; and everyone who knows what a wonderful poet she
is will look forward to it. . Margaret and Pat are giving the other,
which will be a variation on one they and Regina are giving the
next weekend at the Bold Journeys Conference. It will be
something of a primer on homophobia and sexism. No, it will
not be boring and dry, now why would you think that!? Other
workshops will be welcomed, so if you want to give one, please
do. We will help with arrangements and signup sheets, etc., for
those who want to give a workshop.
Remember to bring cameras, photographs from earlier retreats, drums and kazoos, books, cards, a sleeping bag or other
cozy bedding, a flashlight, etcetera.. A.nd enjoy an invigorating
weekend of R&R at Osage Hills State Park, south of Bartlesville,
north of Pawhuska; October 9 - 11. Call 521-9696 if you have any
questions.. Hope to see you there!

POETRY EVENING
A GREAT
Success!
In July, local poets gathered at Herland to share their work.
More than ten women read or recited poems on a variety of topics.
Scheduled participants, as well as audience members who also
read, received a great deal of encouragement.
A.nger, passion, and humor were only a start; abuse, loss,
memories, nature, and more were also explored. The group was
also treated with a healing song after several painful readings
were shared. The emcee offered lively introductions and shared
some audience "favorites."
The project ofHSR publishing a poetry book was discussed,
and all were encouraged to submit work to be published in the
VOICE. The July evening was such a great success and created
such enthusiasm that a winter poetry reading evening will be
scheduled.
Editor's note: Submissions to the Voice are always welcomed
All should include the author's name and contact information.
Items can be published with a pseudonym or anonymously on
request of the author.

ARTISTS:
WHERE ARE YOU?
For some years, Herland has had consignment items for sale
at the bookstore. This project was established to have an outlet for
women to sell handmade items; each person registered and was
assigned an artist number to use in labelling their work.
We would like to have contact again with all artists and
artisans about items remaining; unfortunately, we do not have
current records. If you have had items for sale at the bookstore,
please call for Diane at 521-9696 or 524-3495 and leave information for contact. The HSR board will disburse all unclaimed work
in December. Please let us know where you are.

If you get this and read it in time, don't miss Emmylou Harris
at the International Bluegrass Festival in Guthrie October 3rd. It' s
been a long time since she has perfonned in Oklahoma and she' s
one of the all-time greats. Tickets aren't cheap, so if you can afford
it, I'm sure she'll be worth it.
On October 8, Kelly Willis, Richard Buckner and Bruce
Robison will be performing at The Blue Door. I've been a fan of
Kelly Willis for several years now. However, it's just recently that
I've heard her husband, Bruce Robison. I had on CMT one
afternoon while I was getting ready to go somewhere, and his video
for his latest song "Angry All the Time" stopped me in my tracks.
His voice was. great, but I also thought the song was something
much better than what is nonnally played on that station. By that
I mean it was an intelligent song, and I recognized Kelly Willis who
appears in the video. I've since learned a little bit more about him
and his new album and I'm really looking forward to this show.
And if you've never heard Kelly Willis, you're in for a treat. Her
rockin', rockabilly, sometimes country sound is fun, and she's got
such a strong voice. She can rock, get you swinging, or break your
heart on the slow, love-gone-wrong songs. She sings with her
husband Bruce on several songs on his new CD, so no doubt it will
be a group effort show. I have no doubt this will be one of a long
line ofgreat shows at The Blue Door, so put some cold beer or cokes
in the ice chest and prepare for a night of great music.
Lucy Kaplansky will be back at City Arts Center November 6.
She's one of my very favorite songwriters and she was great when
she was in town last year. If you didn't make it, don't miss this
second chance!
Another note: I was at Best Buy a couple of months ago and
noticed they had the latest CD, Kindness, by Toshi Reagon. She's
the daughter of Bernice Johnson Reagon of Sweet Honey in the
Rock, and is quite a talented singer and musician. This CD features
rap, blues, and retro-funk, as well as ancient chants. Keep your eye
out for it. I've read good things about it but have not bought it yet
myself.
Happy listening!
