HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HERLAND, INC.!
SERVING THE WOMEN'S COMMUNITY FOR OVER FOUR YEARS
A little over 4 years ago, a group of
women was called together by Barbara
Cleveland, because she wanted to discuss
turning over her Herland Bookstore to the
community. That group of women met,
wrote bylaws and articles of incorporation (thanks K.M.), and dreamed. By January 1, 1984 , we were officially Herland
Sister Resources, a not-for-profit corporation in the state of Oklahoma. We organized ·as a collective -- each person
had equal say in what we would do and all
would share duties. We dreamed of providing a place for women of all colors and
creeds, Herland would be a place for all
women who believed they were strong or
could be strong.
We were also broke. The ifTITlediate
problem was how to pay the rent . IfTITlediately, we turned to the women's cofTITlunity and you responded. Somehow we made it
through those months of not knowing where
the rent money would come from and if we
would be able to buy books and records to
stock the store. You always came through
in time. We borrowed money only twice -from a loyal patron to enable us to stock
the store for important events (thanks
D.M . ) ,
You've contributed more than money.
Volunteers have worked numerous hours at
the store. Somehow the yard got mowed before the neighborhood got too upset. The
ceiling was replaced. Musicians volunteered to perform. Legal services and accounting services have been volunteered. Many
of you have given your time and special
skills .
It seems almost impossible to believe
that on November 30, the Herland Collective
closed the deal to buy a place of our own .
Even in the earliest days we dreamed of
some day having a place where the store
could be and where we could have events for
women---a place of our own where no landlord could tell us what we could or could
not do . Finally that dream has come true,
thanks to the women of this community . When
the collective asked for your help, you
were there. By November 30, you had contributed the $3,500 necessary to close the
deal .
It hasn't been easy . We've had our
problems, yet Herland is stronger than ever.
Herland is successful because of you . This
is not another request for contributions.
You'll get plenty of those. This is a Celebration of what we can do together , . Herland is more than a building. It ;~, ~omen's
music concerts, retreats, seminars, ~ot-luck
dinners, coffeehouses. Herl and is community.
We give each other strength and courage to
keep on living every day in a world that denies us . Herland's continuing exlstence
confirms our collective power.
Thanks, Barbara, for your vision and
leadership. Thanks to all of you for ' making
Herland a continuing reality.
