There are many in the lesbian
community that believe lesbian
battering could notexist—that women
are not capable of physically and
emotionally abusing other women.
But, it does exist and it is much more
widespread than most of us are aware.
In Austin in 1985, the Austin Coalition
Against
Abuse
in
Lesbian
Relationships(ACAALR)conducted a
survey of81 lesbians. They found that
65% of those surveyed said they had
experienced abuse in one or more adult
relationships. Of this 65%, 70%
reported physical abuse, 85%
emotional abuse and 32% reported
sexual abuse. 13% reported that they
were the abusive one in
the
relationship. In line with national
statistics on women in the general
population, one third said that they
were sexually abused as children and
over 50% report emotional abuse as
children.
Battered lesbians deny their abuse or
refuse to seek help out of fear that they
will not be believed or because they see
no way out of the relationship. They
may also be afraid to approach
mainstream battered women's shelters
for fear of a homophobic response and
because there is little or no community
support or services in this area. Many
lesbians do not believe that there is any

TTie holidays are a time of family, together
ness, giving and love, right? Well, yes, but
they are also times of stress, budget-busting
and even depression. We all have different
ways of coping with the holidays but some
people tend to go to the extremes. How do
you react to the holidays? Answer the 10
questions below and find out!
1. You normally begin shopping for
Christmas gifts:
a. at the January sales.
b. the day after Thanksgiving.
c. Christmas eve.
2. When you buy Christmas gifts, you:

b. try to find a sjjecial gift that isn't too
expensive for everyone.
c. you putit off and end up buying whatever
you can find at the last minute.
3.You send Christmas cards to:
a.everyone you've ever met,from elemen
tary school on.
b. to close friends and family.
c. to whoever sent you cards last year.
4. For Christmas dinner, you:
a. like a big crowd and turkey with all the
trimmings.
b. prefer something special but simple for
yourself and a few close friends or family.

remember that you don't have to spend
$100 on everybody on your list and take
some time for yourself. You'll be much
better prepared, both physically and men

7.If your parents decided to go away for
the holidays, you:

this to your traditions?

O.K. Scrooge,so Christmas is just another
day of the year to you, and you don't see
why you should knock yourself out to con

loosen up a bit. Send out a few Christmas

putting some real thought into the gifts you
buy. Depression is a big problem this time
of year — pteople set their expectations so
high that they are bound to feel let down.
Maybe this was a problem for you in the
past, and now you've resorted to no exptectations at all to avoid the disappointment.
You could have a great time this year — if
you'll let yourself.

MIRROR IMAGES
Like a warm feeling of security.
Your smile overpowers me.
My eyes ore the key to my soul.
Cost a glance at them; And you shall see
A reflection of yourself...
the way I see you.
The way you con never see yourself.
Your dreams are the biggest part of you.
The port I admire most.
The port that you should keep.
Yet, and yet.. .
There is an even better part of you.
This is your heart.
It is so fragile, so daring,so eager to ...
To give all that it has.
And ask nothing in return.
Let me be your mirror.
Look into my eyes;
For if you do, you will see my soul.
You will see yourself...
The way only I see you.

What's in the Stars for You this month?
SCORPIO
(Oct 24th -Nov 22nd)
December 15th - 31st
You'11 have to keep out ofthe limelightright
before Christmas so that you can finish a
project at work before the holidays. Once
you're finished, watch out! Going out and
having friends over dominate the rest of the
month.
January
Your personal life is looking up for 1990 but
you'11 have to take a serious look at ho w you
handle your personal finances. Now is a
good time to sit down and figure out a
budget for the coming year. A hot new
romance may come on the scene this month,
it may not last, but it will be fun while it
does! A raise or promotion early in the
month could help you with some of your
holiday debt. Your social life is exciting and
this could be tied in with your new flame!
SAGIHARIUS
(Nov 23 - Dec 21)
December 15th - 31st
A holiday bonus or raise could lift your
spirits right now, but don't be tempted to
spend it all! You may be asked to host a
party or assume leadership for an
organization that you belong to. Your love
life gets a boost around the 20th.
January
The trick this year is to get off to a good start
and it looks like you'll have all the right
opportunities as January rolls around.
Home, business and especially love are all
looking up this month. Now is a good time
romantic adventure that's headed your way.
CAPRICORN
(Dec 22nd - Jan 19th)
December 15th - 31st
You feel short-tempered this holiday
season.Try to control yourself or you could
make everyone's Christmas miserable.
Social activities could bring back your good
will, so take advantage of all those
invitations. After Christmas, you feel more
relaxed and you are ready for a festive New
Year's celebration!
January
You may feel like everyone is picking on
you, particularly at work, as the new year
gets under way.The feeling will pass by the
10th. Try to keep your temper under
control, it's better to lose a few battles than
to lose friends. After the 15th, things
smooth out and you're able to get
everything back on track at work and at
home. Something that has been causing
stress will ease up and let you enjoy the
company of friends and co-workers again.
Your love life will see some improvement
during this pteriod.
AQUARIUS
(Jan 20th - Feb 18th)
December 15th - 31 st
Focus on your work in the weeks before the

the better after the first of the year. There
will be plenty of time for social activities

what you need to lift your spirits after the
stress of the holidays. And, a new romantic
interest could be pressuring you for a
compromise or you may find yourself in
court. Keep a low profile imtil the 20th and
that should help immensely in relieving
tensions. Someone you've heljjed in the
past will come back to help you in an
unexpected way late in the month. Accept
their help graciously and you'll have an ally
commitment. Don't be afraid to say "yes",
it could be the best decision you've made in
for life. Romance is the high point of

your potential for accidents is very high.
ARIES
(Mar 21st - April 19)
December 15th - 31st
A relationship that has been on the rocks
could take an unexpected turn for the better

Finances are also on an upswing and you

couldn't be happier!

(May 21st - June 21st)
December 15th - 31 st
All work and no play makes Gemini a very
unhappy girl right now.Everyone is getting
into the holiday spirit and you have tied
yourself down with work. Try to sneak in
some social activities after hours, you may
end up tired, but this time of year is short
