hopes to begin several joint ventures
this year. Icebergg.'s projects are made
possible through contributions and loans
from women and men throughout the Midwest
who want to support these independent
efforts by alternative artists.

We are two people who have been listening
to Women's and Men's Music for the past
few years with growing excitement. We
would like to take this energy and uae it
to form a performing group to share this
music between ourselves and with others.
Our vision includes the following ideas:
1) women and men performing and playing
together,

women's/men's/political music,
l) a group that will perform for fun and

The 10th annual National Women's Music
l.'estival will be held on Memorial Weekend,
May 25-27, 1~84 in Bloomington, Indiana.
The oldest and largest indoor celebration
of women's culture is held on the ·cam;us
of Indiana llniversity. In addition to
mai.nstage concerts featuring many old and
newer names in performing arts, the
festival offers diverse workshops, new
performer showcases, fine arts and video
exhibits, artisans and tradeswomen, and
networking in the music industry conference.
,otential exhibitors, showcase performers~
workshop presenters arid tradeswomen should
contact festival oragnizers to participate.
Performer showcase applications should
include a live demo tape, promotional
material and a photo. The showcases offer
national exposure for newer performing
artists.

offering a workshop, selling their crafts,

Holly Near and the
New Song Movement

During May 1984, Cultural Work, · Inc. , the
non-profit organiz_a tion founded by Holly
Near and others will sponsor a national
tour by Holly Near and Inti-Illimani, a
Chilean folk ensemble living in exile in
Italy.
Inti-Illimani, formed _in 1967, is often
identified as a leadcr ' in the New Song
Movement in Latin America. They have
toured worldwide prior to and since the
1973 military coup which forced their exile.
Their musical style using Latin American
instruments such as bamboo flutes and cane
pipes parallels their social conunitment
to the revitalization of indigenous Latin
• American cultural values. Inti-Illimani ' .s
last United States tour was ln 1980.
Those people f~iliar with Holly Near' s
work will appreciate the special intricacies
that Inti-Illimani and Holly's combined .
talents create!
Concert dates around the country are being
planned. Midwest dates include Austin, TX
on May 15 or 16; Madison, WI on May 17;
Chicago, IL on May 18 and Iowa Peace
Chatauqua on May 19/20.
These exciting and dy~amic performances are
guaranteed to be sold out well in advance.

radio station that plays women's music,
has a wotten's music program or would like
to play women's music? If so, let us know!
As distributors, we are often supplied
with promotional copies of new album
releases for radio stations. We currently
have an extensive list of stations, but
we don't want to miss any area that would
use the albums but is not on our list.
Women's music is frequently played on
college, listener-sponsored, public and
sometimes progressive radio stations.
If you know of programs or stations, let
us know. In the next issue of Women's
Music News, we'll publish a list of all
the stations! WMN readers will know
where to listen and the stations wi•ll
receive a little free publicity.

is a small company interested primarily in
working with the local St. Louis and
regional community to present women's
dances, cormnunity theatre and small concerts.
Barbara Lau, Connie Lane and Mary
Carpenter formed Wired Women to organize
dances every Thursday at the Heartbreak
Hotel. Capacity crowds talk, dance and
generally have fun. 1'We seem to attract
women who don't like to go to a bar,"
said Lau.
Wired Women is currently working on an
April 20-22 run of Last Sunnner at Bluefish
Cove on the Webster College campus. Last
Swiiiii"er is about a group of lesbinns who
vacation at the cove and must deal with
a straight voman who, not knowing that all
the women are lesbians, also vacations
there. The play was written by Jane Chambers,
a lesbian playwright highly-touted for
this and other works.

the office when you want to stop by . . .

Not only is the new name "less of a mouthful"
but with some of our recent projects, it
is also more accura'te:
+ Midwest recently began distributing
and promoting ''Men's Music" by -profeminist and gay men and many
children's albums.
+ Midwest has always done a substantial
amount of promotion for its artists.
To new artists looking for assistance,
our longer name is misleading.
+ Midwest has recently been involved in
concert production with various other
community groups and production companies.
Midwest Music, Inc. will STILL:
- continue as the exclusive women's music
distributor in the Midwest,
- publish WOMEN I S MUSIC NEWS,
- work closely with labels, artists, producers and bookers within the network
of women's music businesses.
Look for the familiar record logo on your
albums and tapes, but now with our new
"nickname!"
Many new exciting albums are planned by
our artists in the coming months. Look

Ferron's new album SHADOWS ON A DIME will
be available in early March-.-This has
been a long awaited album which is full
of wonderful songs. Perron will be touring
this spring also. Songs on the ablum
include "It Won't Take Long", "Snowin'
in Brooklyn", "I Never Was To Africa"
and "Shadows on a Dime. "
Holly Near has a new album coming out
April 1, WATCH OUT is a beautiful folk
