Maxey Resigns
AUSTIN - In an effort to devote more
time to his new job, recently elected
State Representative Glen Maxey will
step down as Executive Director of the
Lesbian Gay Rights Lobby of Texas
(LGRL).He submitted his letter ofres
ignation to the LGRL Board at its May
4th meeting in Austin. The Board ex
pects to bring Maxey on as an ex-officio
member at its July meeting.
For four years Maxey has worked for
repeal of the state's "anti-homosexual
conduct" law (section 21.06 of the Pe
nal Code)and promotion of AIDS leg
islation for funding and community-

The story of Nikki and how she came to be.

the buttons on my tope recorder. She giggies and gurgles as she plays
with the buttons and puils on the cord.
Nikki is the secondary subject of this article. She is a beautifui nine month-
old girl with brown hair and the biggest biue eyes you've ever seen. The
real subject here is how Nikki came to be. Her mother, Cindy, was
artificially inseminated, and she is going to tell you (in her own words)
what that entails.

An Overview of the Recent Session
OF the Texas Legislature

Lobbyist for the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas
On May 27lh at midnight, the 72nd
session of the Texas Legislature ended.
This has been a victorious session for
the Lesbian and Gay community. We
defeated house bill 2509,sponsored by
Rep. demons(D-Pollock),that would
have criminalized persons living with
HIV infection and undercut all of our
past policy successes. We defeated
house bill 2448, sponsored by Rep.
Carona(R-Dallas),andHouseBill 1362,
patients, which in turn, would have led
to a shortage of doctors to treat those
living with HIV. This bill would have
also opened the door for other oppres
sive legislation and more mandatory
testing.
The defeat of House Bill(HB)702 was
a big task, and we, as a community,
must congratulate ourselves for our or
ganization,political acumen and perse

about lesbian and gay issues and who
donated money to his campaign de

702seemed almostinevitable,the phone
calls and telegrams of those who had
worked so hard in the Bullock cam
paign really paid off.
As for the good bills that the LGRL
introduced, we are disappointed that
none ofthem passed.It has always been
that we will have several new support
ers of gay and lesbian issues in the
Texas House.
The Texas Legislature meets every two
years, however,the Governor plans to
call several special sessions in the in
terim.The first ofthese special sessions
will be in July to discuss the state bud
get. Our issue in this first special ses
sion will be funding for high risk insur
ance pools benefitting persons living
with HIV.Also,1 plan to push for a state
resolution asking the Center for Dis
ease Control to redefine AIDS so that
women, who have different opportun
istic infections than men, will receive
the same benefits that men receive.
