Calling All Women Golfers!!
(and wannabe golfers)
Herland is organizing a golf outing
for all interested women who would

some Saturday or Sunday in June,
please email Judy at jawber@lycos.com or call 721-6578 by

She will communicate directly with responders after
May 15th to coordinate the best time and place. Be-
ginners Welcome!!
State of Herland Address
A
s the 2004 income and expenses statement
on page 5 indicates, we ran somewhat in the
red last year. Partly this was because we did
not receive any foundation grant money, which we
usually do and expect to do this year. Partly it was
because most of our energy was spent establishing
and maintaining a variety of projects both low-key
and either free or low-income - our supper club,
scrabble night, video night, hike, book club, small inhouse concerts, and poetry issues of the Voice.
The Herland Voice is one of our major expenses; it
never comes close to paying for itself, and our poetry issues cost even more than the rest. We think
they are worth it.
This year we have or are planning several fundraising events, and, reluctant as almost all of us are
to ask for money, we are committed to asking for
donations at our various in-house "free" events".
We are an entirely volunteer organization, and almost entirely a service organization - note our sales
last year were less than 10% of our income. We
live or die by your generosity. Last year we received around $2,400 - an average of $200 a
month. If we can increase that by $50 a month, to
bring in $3,000, plus receive our grant and stage
some good fundraisers, we will be in the black which will put us in the pink..
Please use the enclosed envelope to help us keep
on keeping on for another year. If you can't send us
anything this month, save the envelope and send it
on when you can. Thank you very very much.

We grow much of our own food and provide ourselves with many services, freeing ourselves somewhat from dependence on the larger economy. This
gathering was created by the women of Twin Oaks to
connect us with women outside of our geographic
community.

No, not Ms. Hallmark. It was, actually, the formidable American
poet and women's leader Julia Ward Howe who called for the
establishment of the holiday and in 1870 wrote the moving poem
printed below. It was written in the wake of the Civil War, as a
powerful feminist call against war.
Arise, then, women of this day!
Arise all women who have hearts,
Whether your baptism be that of water or of tears
Say firmly:
'We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands shall not come to us reeking of carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We women of one country
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.
From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says, "Disarm, Disarm!"
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice!
Blood does not wipe out dishonor
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war.
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace,
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God.
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality
May be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient
And at the earliest period consistent with its objects
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions.
The great and general interests of peace.
Julia Ward Howe

TWIN OAKS 22ND ANNUAL WOMEN'S
GATHERING!
according to our values of cooperation, non-violence,
sharing and equality. For 38 years, we've been learning how to provide for our own needs, both economic
and social. Our businesses include making hammocks and rope chairs, making tofu and other soyfoods, and indexing books.
