AT LIFEbeatPARTY
"You say he's a faggot,do you want to bash in
his brain?" goes a line from "Pieces of You,"the
title song from the debut albumby Jewel,Atlantic
Records' newest star. "You say he's a faggot, are
you afraid you're just the same?" the song continues. "Faggot, faggot, do you hate him/'Causehe's
pieces of you?" WhileJewel's hit "Who Will Save
Your Soul" has become ubiquitous on radio and
MTV,gays and lesbianshave been respondingto
the provocativelyricsof "Piecesof You."
"It's a pretty straightforwardsong," the singer
recently told STEREOTYPEwhen asked about
the song's meaning. "I think a lot of people are
uncomfortable with aspects of other people,
whetherit be their sexualityor their race or whatever it is, because those aspects represent the
pieces of themselvesthat they're unsureof. I think
the more confident and secure we are with ourselves, the less judgmentalwe are with other people. It's ultimatelya song that urges people to be
kind to one another."
In the midst of Jewel's recently completed
spring tour with labelmate Duncan Sheik, the
singer was a guest of honor at a LIFEbeat party
following her show at New York's Irving Plaza.
Not only did Jewel help raise over $2,000 for
LIFEbeat-the music industry charity that raises
money to help fightAIDS-she was also presented with a gold record for her Pieces of You album
at the fete.

"Here's a band that, until recently,
we could only imagine;' TheAdvocate
wrote about Extra Fancy in a recent
issue. "[The band] plays extra-hard
rock with major mainstreamappealto
the Alice in Chains/Soundgarden/Pearl
Jam set but with extra-explicitlyqueer
lyrics screamingaway on top." Extra
Fancy is comprised of openly gay
frontman Brian Grillo, and openly
straight bandmates D.A. Foster,
MichaelHately,and DerekO'Brien.
TheirAtlanticdebutalbumis calledSinnerman.,which,as TheAdvocatepointsout,is "fullof hot,
sweaty,hornyman-to-manaction."Usingsame-sexpronounsthroughout,Grillo'slyricscovertopics
like gay-bashing,comingout of the closet, rape, and livingwithHIV.The firstvideofromthe album
is for the song"Sinnerman"and featuresactorAlexisArquette. The clip, whichcontainsa same-sex
kiss, was recentlyacceptedfor airingby MTV.ExtraFancywill be performingat gay pride celebrations in Los Angeles(June23). San Francisco(June30), and San Diego(July28). Here, the always
engagingGrillotalksto STEREOTYPE
aboutlife in ExtraFancy.
STEREOTYPE:What kinds of fans come to your shows? It's not just gay kids, right?
Brian Grillo:No, a lot of our followingis straight.A lot more straightpeople tend to go to rock
and roll clubs in general. But our crowd is so different-we also get West Hollywoodmusclebuilder guys, we get really effeminateguys, we get dykes. We get all differentkinds of people
becausewe put on a good show-it's like a freak show, full of chills and thrills and spillsand sex
and anythingelse you couldwant.
STEREOTYPE:Do you ever get any homophobesin the audience?
BG: Oh, yeah. That happeneda few weeksago, actually. This big guy kept comingup to me at the
ViperRoomin L.A., standingright in front of the stage, going,"Youfuckingfaggot! You'resick!"
I said to him, "You'reoutnumberedhere. Get out!" I was ready to fighthim, and I jumped off the
stage, but he ran out of the club. And we had a run-in with skinheadsout in the [San Fernando]
Valleyonce. They waitedoutsideour showwantingto fightus. But that night was luckybecausea
lot of our friends were there. We had drag queens in mini-skirtsthrowingtheir purses around,
whalingon them.But ultimately,I reallydon't believein violence.I don't like that kind of element
to be attractedto our showsbecauseit's more about a release. We like to createa place whereanybody can comeand feel safe.
•
STEREOTYPE:How do you think Extra Fancyfits in with the so-called"queercoremovement"-bands like PansyDivision,TeamDresch, and Tribe8?
BG: First of all, I have to say I like a lot of those bands, and a
lot of thosebandsI don't like-just the way I feel aboutstraight
bands.I thinkthe queercoresceneis very importantbecauseit's
encouragingyoungkids to pick up instruments. So for that reason, it's a very cool thing, and everyoneshouldtry to supportit,
becausethere couldbe a few geniusescomingout of it. But I've
gotten a lot of flack from some people in the queercorehierarchy because l don't call Extra Fancy a queercoreband. That
was nevermy goal in the firstplace.I've neverjoined groupsor
scenes or cliques.We're a rock band; we're a punk rock band;
we're a hard rock band.I want to reach all kinds of people.I'm
sure there are a lot of straight people that can listen to my
wordsand say,"Man,I've been therebefore."
JEWELIS GOLDEN
AT LIFEbeatPARTY
"You say he's a faggot,do you want to bash in
his brain?" goes a line from "Pieces of You,"the
title song from the debut albumby Jewel,Atlantic
Records' newest star. "You say he's a faggot, are
you afraid you're just the same?" the song continues. "Faggot, faggot, do you hate him/'Causehe's
pieces of you?" WhileJewel's hit "Who Will Save
Your Soul" has become ubiquitous on radio and
MTV,gays and lesbianshave been respondingto
the provocativelyricsof "Piecesof You."
"It's a pretty straightforwardsong," the singer
recently told STEREOTYPEwhen asked about
the song's meaning. "I think a lot of people are
uncomfortable with aspects of other people,
whetherit be their sexualityor their race or whatever it is, because those aspects represent the
pieces of themselvesthat they're unsureof. I think
the more confident and secure we are with ourselves, the less judgmentalwe are with other people. It's ultimatelya song that urges people to be
kind to one another."
In the midst of Jewel's recently completed
spring tour with labelmate Duncan Sheik, the
singer was a guest of honor at a LIFEbeat party
following her show at New York's Irving Plaza.
Not only did Jewel help raise over $2,000 for
LIFEbeat-the music industry charity that raises
money to help fightAIDS-she was also presented with a gold record for her Pieces of You album
at the fete.
